The inclusion of honeysuckle in the diet helps lower bad cholesterol levels while increasing the amount of beneficial triglycerides. Especially useful are varieties bred specifically for growing in a wide range of natural conditions.
The unpretentious Chulymskaya honeysuckle variety is particularly resistant to temperature changes even during the flowering period, and is not affected by diseases. Due to its spectacular flowering and fruiting, it is used as a decorative element in landscape design to decorate local areas, city parks.
Breeding history
This variety was bred in the Tomsk region by interspecific hybridization of selected varieties of honeysuckle from different regions (Altai and Kamchatka) in 1979. The goal of the breeders was to obtain honeysuckle resistant to the difficult climatic conditions of the Urals. The variety was included in the State Register and recommended for cultivation in all regions of Russia in 2004.
Description of the variety
Chulymskaya honeysuckle is a perennial plant (can bear fruit up to 30 years), which is a spreading shrub, the average height of which is 1.2-1.4 m. The bark is brown-brown, the branches at the tips are slightly curved. The leaves are almond-shaped, medium. During flowering, the plant is covered with small light yellow flowers. Fruits of different shades of purple are kept as tightly as possible on the shoots, seldom crumble by themselves.
Fruit characteristics
Honeysuckle fruits are usually oval irregular in shape with a dimple at the top, slightly flattened on the sides, tapering towards the tip. The color of the berries ranges from plum to dark purple, the skin is thin, but quite dense and firm.
The average weight of Chulymskaya honeysuckle fruits is 1.2 grams. They have a high content of vitamin C (33.2 mg). It is also rich in vitamins A and P, trace elements (sodium, magnesium). At the same time, the sugar content is low, only 8%. Therefore, it is very useful for older people.
Taste qualities
The berry taste is refreshingly sweet, with a slight sourness. The tasting score is very high - 4.8 points. Can be eaten fresh, added to a variety of drinks and smoothies, and made pies. This variety tolerates frost very well. Shows good transportability.
Ripening and fruiting
Chulymskaya honeysuckle belongs to mid-season varieties, the first berries begin to ripen in the third decade of June (17-22 days). Ripening is gradual - within 1-2 weeks. She begins to produce crops at the age of 3-4 years.
Yield
This variety shows very good yields. When planted in suitable conditions, it can produce 5 kg of berries from one bush. The average yield is 3-4 kg.
Growing regions
Honeysuckle is zoned for growing in Siberia and the Urals. In colder climates, gardeners have observed that it can yield richer yields than in a warm region.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
Cross-pollination with different varieties of honeysuckle is desirable for a good harvest.Ideal neighbors for Chulymskaya are the varieties Giant, Daughter of the Giant, Delight, Dwarf. Therefore, it is better to plant honeysuckle in groups of 3 varieties.
Growing and care
For reproduction, cuttings are used, which are cut from a 4-5-year-old plant. For germination, they are planted in a peat-sand mixture. The best time for planting honeysuckle is April, but seedlings in containers can be planted until October. For planting in the ground, a hole is dug up to a depth of 0.5 m, into which 1-2 buckets of compost are poured. Honeysuckle is quite demanding on growing conditions. Prefers sunny areas with fertile and well-moisturized soil.
Chulymskaya honeysuckle does not need frequent pruning, but every few years it is necessary to carry out sanitary pruning. For this, about one third of the crown volume is cut from the shrub.
Despite its drought tolerance, this variety loves abundant watering and regular spraying. Fertilizing should be done 2-3 times per season. Both phosphorus and potash mineral complexes and organic (bird droppings, manure) are suitable.
Disease and pest resistance
Honeysuckle has strong immunity and is resistant to most diseases. But prevention is desirable. For example, birds love honeysuckle berries, so the plant needs shelter during the fruiting period. Aphids are affected; to combat this pest, the shrub is treated with a solution (0.2%) of Actellik or Rogora. In unfavorable conditions, it can get sick with leaf spot, fungal diseases.
Location and soil requirements
The ideal place for germination of the Chulymskaya variety is open sunny areas, where it gives a bountiful and large harvest. It can grow in partial shade, but in such conditions, the branches are strongly stretched, which complicates pruning.
The root system of honeysuckle is highly branched, therefore it prefers loose, breathable soils with neutral acidity.
