Honeysuckle breeding methods honeysuckle
As a rule, novice gardeners use honeysuckle saplings, honeysuckle, purchased in the nursery for planting. But if desired, the bushes can be learned to propagate at home. Doing it yourself is pretty simple.
Features of cuttings
Most often, gardeners use cuttings for breeding honeysuckle. Green branches can be harvested in the early fall months or in the spring. In the second case, this is done before bud break.
Preparation
For propagation of honeysuckle with green cuttings, you need to choose strong shoots. Their thickness should be within 1 centimeter, and their length – at least 7 centimeters. Before you start cutting, you need to check if the shoots are suitable for grafting. To do this, each branch must be carefully bent. Shoots should not be too elastic. Such cuttings are considered weaker and take root less well. For work, it is worth using branches that break with a slight crunch when bent.
Shoots are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. Each selected cutting should have at least 4 full-fledged buds. It is necessary to carefully remove the foliage from them.
For plants to take root faster, they can be additionally treated in a solution that stimulates root growth. This product will protect the rhizome from rotting, as well as from fungal diseases.
Technology
After that, you can start preparing the soil. It is made from humus, garden soil, sand and compost. All these products are mixed with each other in equal proportions. Novice gardeners sometimes buy ready-made soil mixture in specialized stores.
This product is poured into a container prepared in advance. After that, cuttings are placed in it. Before this procedure, the ground must be well watered. After that, the cuttings of honeysuckle should be covered with foil. The first roots will appear on them in 10-12 days.
You can plant germinated cuttings in a permanent place in a couple of months. They can take root there pretty quickly.
Suitable for grafting and woody cuttings. For breeding honeysuckle, it is worth choosing annual branches. The average length of the cuttings is 10 centimeters. Lignified shoots can also be harvested both in spring and autumn. In the second case, the cuttings must be wrapped in damp burlap. Some gardeners place the shoots in a container with sand or sawdust, or simply drop them in the garden.
Lignified cuttings in warm regions can be planted directly into the ground. In places with a cold climate, they are preferred to grow in greenhouses. Before planting the cuttings in the soil, they dig up the ground and moisten well. In this case, you can add a small amount of "Kornevin" to the water, as well as any fungicide that will help disinfect the area. Cuttings are planted in the soil at a slight angle.
The cuttings are covered with foil or plastic bottles are fixed over them. After 2-3 weeks, the shelter is removed. In the future, caring for the site with young honeysuckle is reduced only to regular watering and systematic removal of weeds. A year later, the grown seedlings are transplanted to a new place.
Gardeners prefer to cut honeysuckle for the reason that the plants grown in this way take root faster and begin to bloom.
How to propagate by layering?
For propagation of honeysuckle by layering, you need to use strong shoots growing on the sunny side of the bush. Having chosen a suitable layering, it must be carefully bent to the ground, being careful not to break. Next, it must be fixed with a hairpin and lightly sprinkled with fertile soil. This will make it much easier to root the plant.
In summer, decorative honeysuckle should be watered regularly. By autumn, roots are formed on the green cut. But you should not rush to separate these plants from the bush. This is best done in the spring. The liana is carefully separated from the main plant using sharp scissors or pruning shears, and then transplanted to a new place.
If the shoots cannot be bent to the ground, the honeysuckle can be propagated by air layers. First you need to select a strong branch and make several cuts under the lower bud.
Use a sharp knife to cut the plastic bottle in two. Each of them must be filled with fertile soil mixed with top dressing. Further, between these parts of the bottle, you need to place a vine. They need to be fixed with tape. Some gardeners decide to pre-wrap the branch with wet moss. Only then is it placed in a container with a moist substrate.
The cuttings must be watered regularly. The soil should always be well moistened. As soon as roots appear on it, it must be cut off from the main bush. It is impossible to plant a young plant in open ground immediately. The seedling must be sent to the greenhouse.
How to plant a bush?
Only bushes aged 4-6 years can be propagated by division. Choosing for this is a strong plant with a powerful root system. Honeysuckle can be planted either in March or in September.
The process of dividing a bush looks very simple. The plant must be carefully dug up. Its roots should be cleaned of the earth. With a sharp shovel or knife, the bush must be divided into two parts. To prevent infection of the plant, the sections must be treated with crushed activated carbon. If desired, this product can be replaced with potassium permanganate. It also disinfects sections well.
Immediately after root treatment, the plant can be planted in the selected area. Curly honeysuckle will take root very quickly. As early as next year, the gardener will be able to carry out formative pruning of the plant.
Seed propagation
This method of breeding honeysuckle is the most difficult. First you need to wait for the ripe berries to appear on the bushes. It is required to extract seeds from them. They need to be rinsed and dried. If the seeds are harvested in the fall, they should be stored in a simple paper bag. Before sowing, they must be briefly placed in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. This will help protect future sprouts from fungal diseases.
The soil for planting seeds is prepared from sand, peat and humus. All these products are mixed in equal quantities. Planting seeds is best in spring. The container with future seedlings must be covered with transparent cling film.
Seeds need to be watered regularly. This must be done carefully, trying not to wash them out of the soil. Within a month, the first shoots will appear in the container. Honeysuckle honeysuckle has good germination.
In June, the plants are planted in open ground. Before this, the soil should be well dug up and watered. By the fall, the seedlings will grow up. But they will still not be strong enough to cope with the winter cold. Therefore, in the fall, they will need to be covered with a layer of foliage, straw or peat. A year later, when the seedlings are still growing, they can be transplanted to a permanent place.
If you do everything right, the plant planted in a new area will take root without any problems. It will be able to please the gardener with the first flowers in 2-3 years.
