Yablochny Spas is a variety that is one of the achievements of modern domestic agricultural science. This summer variety has a whole arsenal of improved properties, combines resistance to adverse weather conditions and infectious ailments, acceptable self-fertility, fairly early ripening, decent size and presentation of the fruit. It was bred not so long ago, but it was already able to win a positive assessment of amateur gardeners in central Russia and other post-Soviet countries.
Breeding history of the variety
The apple-tree variety Yablochny Spas belongs to the last group of this culture, which has immune resistance to such an ailment as scab. When breeding a variety, specialists crossed cultures with a different set of chromosomes. Basically, for this, the varieties Redfrey and Papirovka tetraploid were used. Crossbreeding was carried out in Krasnodar, as well as at the All-Russian Research Institute for Breeding Fruit Crops in the Oryol Region.
Description of the variety
The Apple Spas is a tall, rather large tree. It has a medium-dense crown in the form of a sphere with a diameter of 2-3 meters. The height of a seedling at an age of 1 year reaches almost 2 m.Every year the length of the branches should increase by about 60 cm.If this indicator is more or less, then the amount of fertilizer applied to the soil should be adjusted, respectively, up or down.
Adult apple trees can grow up to 10-14 m, but experienced gardeners recommend maintaining the height at 4-5 m with annual pruning. Otherwise, the yield will fall.
The bark on the tree is relatively smooth, light gray in color. The branches have a skeletal structure and differ in that they are located almost horizontally relative to the trunk.
The leaves of the Apple Spas apple tree are bright green, rather large, slightly sharpened to the tip. Their texture is slightly wrinkled, pubescent. Along the edge, unlike other varieties of apple trees, they do not have a pronounced serration, but only a slight waviness.
Features, pros and cons
The apple tree of the described variety has excellent immunity to such ailments as scab, rust, brown spot, powdery mildew, moniliosis. Also, Apple Spas is not attacked by such pests as aphids, cicada, flies, goose and scale insects. Also, among the advantages, one can note excellent frost resistance, unpretentiousness to the composition of the soil, early maturity and consistently high yield.
Of the minuses, gardeners note the need to constantly prune trees. If this is not done, then very quickly the crown of the apple tree will thicken, enough sunlight will not penetrate to the fruits, respectively, the yield will decrease. In addition, it is very inconvenient to pick fruits from an overgrown tree.
Ripening and fruiting
The Apple Savior begins to bear fruit quite early - at the age of 2-3 years of the tree's life. This is due to the fact that the apple tree is tall. This fruit tree begins to produce a stable harvest at 5-8 years of age.
Apples ripen in August, as a rule, on the 8-17. When grown in warm climates, these dates come earlier - at the beginning of August. The consumer period lasts until the end of September.
Growing regions
The distribution area of the Apple Spas apple tree is quite extensive - it is practically the entire European part of Russia, the southern part of the Urals. In the northwestern regions, Yablochny Spas can also be grown, but in this case, you need to take care of sheltering the trees for the winter. In especially frosty winters, it is recommended to add snow to the shelter to protect the root system from frost.
Yield
The yield is estimated as high and reaches 40-50 kg per tree. With proper care and a stable comfortable climate without sudden temperature jumps, up to 60 kg of fruits can be removed from one tree. Over the years, the yield does not fall if the crown is pruned in a timely manner.
Fruits and their taste
The fruits of the Apple Savior are universal, which means that they are good for consumption both fresh and for preservation. The structure of the pulp does not fall apart during heat treatment, so the jam from these apples is excellent.
The main color of apples is greenish-yellow, covered with crimson stripes over the entire area. The more sunny color the fruit receives, the more such veins on it. The weight of one fruit reaches 214 g. The shape of apples is rounded-conical, sometimes slightly oblique, flattened at the poles, there is ribbing on the surface.
The pulp tastes juicy, not too dense, with pronounced sourness, fine-grained. It is rich in useful substances: ascorbic and titratable acids. It contains up to 10.3% sugar.
Growing features
Apple Spas is a rather unpretentious variety. All he needs is a sufficient amount of moisture and light. But at the same time it is worth considering that it is not worth planting it in a swampy area or in soil with a close location of groundwater, otherwise the risk of decay of the root system is likely.
The seedling should be placed in a sunny or slightly shaded place, in which there are no strong gusts of wind. Apple Spas can be planted in almost any soil, except for sand. In this case, it is necessary to enrich it with black soil and mineral fertilizers.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
