Vishnevoe is a fairly well-known variety of apple trees in Russia. It can often be found in gardens and private plots. Gardeners respond positively to both the cultivation process and the taste of the crop.
Breeding history of the variety
The Vishnevoe variety was obtained at the All-Russian Research Institute of Horticulture named after V.I. I. V. Michurina (VNIIS). The selection was carried out by the scientist Sergei Isaev, whose task was to obtain a variety suitable for the middle zone of the country. The variety was successfully bred in collaboration with such breeders as G. A. Lobanova, Z. I. Ivanova and V. K. Zayats. For crossing we took the varieties Pepin saffron and Antonovka ordinary. The apple tree Vishnevoe is often also called Vishnevaya.
Description of the variety
Cherry is a medium-sized tree that grows 3-5 meters in height. The crown is dense, has a rounded or flat-round shape. The branches are compact, reddish in color; together with the trunk, they form an almost right angle. Young shoots are distinguished by a fine structure and cherry color. The shoots turn brown over the years.
The leaves are medium in size, standard green or dark green in color. The leaf blades are smooth to the touch, can be either glossy or matte. A serrated edge is present, the tip is slightly pointed. The roots of the Cherry apple tree are strong, branched, and superficial. The central pivot may or may not be present.
The apple tree blooms with medium-sized flowers that are white or cream in color. The petals are shaped like a small egg. The flowers smell strong, due to which insects constantly fly around the flowering apple tree. Especially lush blooms are observed during warm summers with sunny, clear days.
Features, pros and cons
The main feature of the Cherry apple tree is that this variety can be grown on different types of rootstocks. In addition, the variety is characterized by multiple advantages, among them:
excellent fruiting;
beautiful and tasty apples;
high transportability and marketability of fruits;
unpretentious care.
There are also disadvantages:
there is a weak resistance to fungal diseases;
the variety may not survive severe frosts.
Ripening and fruiting
Cherry belongs to the winter varieties of apple trees. By the beginning of the first month of autumn, the ripeness of the fruits begins. The consumer period starts 10-15 days after apple picking and lasts until mid-February. The first time the apple tree will bear fruit at 5 or 6 years of age.
Growing regions
Cherry is recommended to be grown in the Black Earth Region, as well as in the central regions of the country. It can often be found in the Tambov and Voronezh regions of Russia.
Yield
The apple tree of the described variety belongs to the high-yielding subspecies. The tree bears fruit annually, without downtime. Gardeners collect 130-150 kilograms of fruit from one plant. They can be transported with ease over long distances. After harvesting, the fruits can lie for about six months, but they will have to provide the correct storage conditions.
Fruits and their taste
Cherry fruits are universal in their purpose.Once collected, you can use them in completely different ways. For example, you can cook compote, make jam or jam. Many people like to eat apples of this variety fresh.
Cherry produces fruits with a regular round or round-conical shape. The weight is not too big - from 115 to 136 grams. The greenish-yellow color is replaced in places by a delicate pink blush. The skin is smooth, delicate, with a thin waxy coating. A large number of subcutaneous points are clearly visible.
The cherry fruit tastes sweet and sour, inside there is a juicy and tender white pulp. Its structure is fine-grained. The aroma is weak, but this is not a disadvantage. Experts rated the taste at 4.3-4.5 points.
Growing features
Like other varieties of apple trees, Cherry prefers sunny areas without excessive moisture. This variety cannot be planted in the shade, because the tree will not bloom under such conditions. The planting pit is prepared in advance by placing fertilizers there. Cherry is planted in autumn or early spring. In the first years, the seedlings will need supports, the role of which can be played by wooden or metal stakes. Such supports can be removed only for the 4th year of the tree's life.
In the process of growth, the Vishnevoe variety should receive comprehensive care. Loosening is very important. Twice a year, the trunk circle is dug up, but you should be careful with the roots. In cool weather, you do not need to water the apple tree, but if the summer is hot, then you will need to do this about 2 times a month. The water is divided into 2 parts: half is poured in the morning, and the other half in the evening.
Pruning is very important for the variety. The health of the apple tree depends on it. The first procedure is carried out some time after planting, when the apple tree gets stronger. In this case, the central conductor and skeletal branches are cut off by a third. Then, in the process of growth, it will only be necessary to remove branches that grow vertically upward, and also to cut off sick, old and frozen specimens in time.
Pollination
In order for a tree to give a high-quality and rich harvest, it will definitely need pollinators nearby. The ideal option is parental varieties, but if they are not there, you can take:
Idared;
Mac;
Sinap North.
Top dressing
Cherry is very much in need of dressing, which will allow the apple tree to strengthen its immunity and give a richer harvest. The first fertilizer is given for 3 years of life. In the spring, nitrogen is needed, which will help build up green mass. After flowering, the variety will need superphosphate and potassium salt. In the fall, they give dressings rich in trace elements and vitamins, but poor in nitrogen. After flowering, experienced gardeners are advised to feed Cherry with infusion of fresh herbs.
Frost resistance
The variety is not very frost-resistant, therefore, in severe cold weather, it cannot do without support. Young trees are especially vulnerable. As soon as there is a danger of the first frost, they are covered. The first step is to mulch the trunk circle. Then the tree is thrown with fallen leaves, spruce branches. As soon as the snow falls, a volumetric snowdrift is made around the apple tree.
Diseases and pests
The variety has an average resistance to fungal diseases. Scab is quite common. Timely cleaning of diseased leaves and spraying the apple tree with Bordeaux liquid will help against it. Often trees get sick with moniliosis. All infected parts are destroyed, then copper oxychloride or the same Bordeaux liquid must be applied.
Pests attack the apple tree relatively rarely, but mice are very fond of it. You can deal with them in one of the following ways:
placing bottles with poison near the apple tree;
adding poison to the whitewash mixture;
laying out fragrant herbs in the trunk circle;
mulching with spruce branches.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
