The variety of apple varieties allows gardeners to compare and find more suitable ones for themselves. One of the most beloved varieties in Russia is the Williams Pride apple tree. The American guest impressed the gardeners not only with the taste of the fruits, but also with their appearance.
Breeding history of the variety
The genealogy of the variety is very wide. American breeders have been working on the apple tree for a very long time. The work took place in several stages. After crossing Welsey x Rum Beauty x Star Melba x Red Rum x Jonathan x Molis Delicious x Julired, Williams Pride was obtained. It happened in 1988.
Description of the variety
The apple tree took the best qualities from its progenitors. A vigorous tree belongs to the summer ripening varieties. Its height reaches 4-5 meters. A wide, oval crown is formed on a strong trunk, from which medium-developed branches extend upward. Many long, highly pubescent shoots of a brownish-brown color extend from the branches. The buds are small, cone-shaped. Egg-shaped leaves have a bright green tint. The surface of the leaf is slightly wrinkled, with a slight sheen. The lower part of the leaf has a strong pubescence. At the beginning of blooming, the flowers are pinkish, at the time of full disclosure they are white. The fruits are most often consumed fresh. Many people prepare compotes and preserves from apples for the winter.
Features, pros and cons
A fast-growing apple variety has a lot of advantages. Thanks to them, Williams Pride fell in love not only at home, but also in a number of other countries.
The positive qualities of the apple tree are:
attractive fruit appearance;
original taste;
good transportability of fruits;
stable annual fruiting;
high resistance to many diseases.
The disadvantages of the variety include:
a rich, spreading crown interferes with the collection of fruits;
fruits are not stored for a long time.
Ripening and fruiting
Fruit ripening begins early. Ripe apples can be harvested from the third decade of July. In the northern regions, harvesting begins in the first half of August.
Most often, the tree begins to bear fruit 3-4 years after planting the seedling. It bears fruit annually.
Growing regions
This crop adapts well to climatic and weather conditions, so apple trees of this variety can be grown everywhere. In the south of Russia, the cultivation of these trees does not require much effort. Gardeners of the middle lane also do not experience difficulties in caring for Williams Pride. The cultivation of apple trees is also practiced in Ukraine. There you need to pay attention to watering and feeding.
Yield
The variety is famous for the large number of large and attractive apples. Gardeners begin to harvest the first fruits already in the third, fourth year after planting. The number of fruits increases every year. After 7-9 years, from one tree you can take from 39 to 57 kg of juicy fruits.
Fruits and their taste
Most often, fruits are formed on annual shoots. Apples are one-dimensional. Their aroma is light and delicate. Slightly flattened fruits have a rounded shape. The standard weight of apples ranges from 160 to 180 g. Soft creamy, juicy and crunchy flesh is covered with medium skin. The wax coating gives the apples a slight sheen. During full maturity, the skin becomes intensely red, almost purple in color.The seeds of the fruit are ovoid in shape, small in size, dark brown in color.
The apples taste sweet and sour. A rich, slight astringency gives the fruit originality, sophistication and piquancy.
The tasters rate the taste of the fruit at 4.7 points. 100 grams of pulp contains 6.8 to 8.7% sugar and about 0.8% acid.
The shelf life of apples is 40-45 days.
Growing features
Agrotechnical care of trees of this variety is simple. But some features must be observed:
in hot regions, trees need additional watering;
cultivation in soils with an excess of acid is undesirable, otherwise the harvest will suffer from poor absorption of iron;
the number of fruits requires rationing;
the amount of fertilizer should correspond to the quality composition of the soil.
Pollination
The variety is not self-fertile. In order for the harvest to be more plentiful, other varieties must be planted in the garden where Williams Pride apple trees grow. Trees of varieties Katya, Papirovka, Julia and Melba are best suited for this.
Top dressing
If all the recommendations are followed during planting, then in the first year the trees do not need additional feeding. In subsequent years, fertilization can be done in spring and autumn. There is no better garden fertilizer than good humus. It is poured under the root system, then the trees are watered. This method helps fertilizers get into the root system faster.
Frost resistance
Due to its high frost resistance, trees of this variety can be grown almost everywhere. In cold regions, it is recommended to cover annual seedlings. This is not necessary in the southern regions.
Diseases and pests
High resistance to diseases and pests does not require frequent spraying. Gardeners consider a special advantage to be good resistance to different types of scab.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
