Apple trees are the most popular fruit plantations in our country. They can be found on large farm plots or tiny hobbyists. Due to its excellent properties in terms of yield, unpretentiousness and taste, the fruits of the Slava Winners variety are very popular among gardeners.
Description of the variety
Apples of this variety bear pretty beautiful fruits with an interesting taste, so you can find them on the plots everywhere. Depending on the region of growth, fruits appear both in the early and late periods. The visual characteristics of the apple tree are as follows;
the tree is powerful, large;
crown of a pyramidal type, wide;
a lot of shoots are formed;
branches grow, heading upward, an acute angle is formed;
in adulthood, growth occurs more to the sides than up;
the height of the tree varies from 3.5 to 5 meters;
foliage is green, round;
bloom is very spectacular, pink inflorescences with a red bud.
Features, pros and cons
Glory to the Winners has a number of advantages and disadvantages that should be taken into account before cultivating this variety. Among the advantages are the following:
fruiting is stable;
high yields, can be grown for sale;
if the crop is harvested in the fall, it is stored calmly during the winter;
excellent immunity to typical diseases for the apple tree;
visually, the fruits are very beautiful, well transported.
There are also disadvantages that should not be forgotten:
reacts negatively to dry weather, up to shattering;
the crown is dense and requires thorough care, if this is not done, fruiting will decrease;
crown formation is not an easy process;
fruits fall off quickly after ripening.
Ripening and fruiting
This variety ripens largely depending on the growing region - from early August in the southern regions to September in the middle lane. Fruiting annually, a mature plant - once every 2 years, but cyclicity does not always appear, it depends on agricultural technology, agricultural background. The first fruits can be removed for 4 or 5 years. It is optimal to harvest until fully ripe, otherwise the fruits will actively fall off.
Yield
The maximum yield is reached after the tree reaches 7 years of age. The harvest in different years varies from 18 to 80 kg per tree. On an industrial scale, this is more than 100 centners per hectare. The harvest is stored until winter.
Fruits and their taste
Visually, the fruits are quite aesthetic and appetizing. The shape of the apples of this variety is round-oval or conical, ribbing occurs, and the skin is of a glossy type. The mass ranges from 150 to 170 g - that is, the size of the apples is medium or large. Ripe fruits are green-yellow in color, the cover is absolutely even with reddish tan marks, a slight bloom of a bluish tint. There are points of the subcutaneous type.
The stalks are medium in thickness and density, weak, but the sides have a stalk even thinner and longer. The pulp can be either yellowish or creamy, light in color in any case.The aroma is moderate, the structure is medium-grained, juicy, delicate. The taste is sweet with sourness, tasting ratings range from 4.4 to 4.6. Fruit can be eaten both fresh and processed, including dried and soaked.
Growing features
In order for agrotechnical measures to give a good result, and the harvest is consistently good, you need to plant a tree correctly. To begin with, a site is selected - well lit, without shade. If the apple tree grows in the shade, the apples will blush unevenly and their quality will decrease. The more sun, the sweeter the fruit. It is very important to avoid stagnant moisture.
The optimal site is on a hill, the soil is sandy loam, loamy. If the soil is not nutritious, it must be constantly fertilized. Glory to the Winners is planted both in spring and autumn, the main thing is to choose a good seedling. The quality of the rhizome, the evenness of the bark, and the presence of grafting are checked. The height of the tree is 1.5 meters, the number of branches is small. Leaves are removed if planting occurs in the fall. The landing algorithm is as follows:
a hole is prepared in advance, it should stand for about a week;
diameter - about 70 cm, meter depth;
the stake for tying is dug in immediately;
a mixture of soil and top dressing is poured into the bottom of the hole;
the seedling is located in the center of the hole, the roots are straightened and covered with earth;
the tree is tied, the soil is compacted;
a bucket of water is introduced, the near-trunk zone is mulched;
from tree to tree it is worth maintaining a distance of 4 meters or more, the minimum row spacing is 3 m.
In addition to proper planting, it is important to observe agrotechnical measures.
Moisturizing. As already mentioned, the variety does not like dry weather, so it is important to moisten the soil in time. In this case, excess water should not be allowed. In the early years, the tree is watered abundantly 4 times, adjusted for the weather. If the summer is dry, the number of procedures is increased to 6 res. It is imperative to water the plant during the flowering period, then after the appearance of the fruits and until the apples are fully ripe. In autumn, moisture stops, as the tree needs to prepare for winter.
Fertilizers. Do not forget about feeding the soil, this process directly affects the harvest and its quality. You need to start fertilizing the plant in the May period with nitrogenous compounds. Then it is worth fertilizing the soil in June - this time with mineral mixtures and organic matter, for example, compost, humus.
Pruning. At a young age, the plant is pruned annually, the correct procedure accelerates the onset of fruiting and increases the yield. Pruning also affects how the tree will endure the winter, whether it will resist enough disease and pests. The event should be carried out in autumn and spring - before the beginning of the growing season. In the second year of the seedling's life, fruiting branches, vertically growing shoots are removed. In the spring, a third of the growth and branches located on the ground are harvested.
Pollination. Since this variety is self-infertile, it is necessary to ensure the presence of pollinating varieties on the site. For this purpose, the varieties Vadimovka and Antonovka are most often planted.
Rodent protection. Trees need to be whitewashed before reaching 5 years of age to scare off rodents. For the winter, the plants are covered with nets and other materials that allow air to pass through.
Frost resistance
Glory to the Winners is distinguished by good winter hardiness, but this does not relieve gardeners from the need to create a shelter for the frost period. First of all, the near-trunk zone is necessarily mulched; humus and peat are suitable for this. A layer of mulch will protect the root system from the cold and prevent it from freezing. It is also a good way to fertilize the soil.
Diseases and pests
Despite the relative resistance to diseases typical of the apple tree, this variety does not always resist scab, powdery mildew. You can get rid of scab with the help of special preparations that are sold in agricultural markets. A bloom of white on the leaves is a sign that the tree is affected by powdery mildew. This negatively affects the fruiting and development of the apple tree. It is important to spray with copper compounds before flowering in order to resist the disease.
Another dangerous ailment is fruit rot, which can completely destroy the crop. For prevention, it is worth spraying with special compounds. In addition to diseases, the variety can be attacked by pests. Chlorophos will help against apple moth, Karbofos against ticks and lice. All these compounds are poisonous, it is necessary to complete the processing one and a half months before harvesting the fruits.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
