Renet Chernenko is a wonderful variety that grows in many regions of our country. It is unpretentious, withstands frosts, gives a stable harvest, therefore it is advised to grow it to beginners.
Breeding history of the variety
The work on the breeding of the Renet Chernenko variety was carried out by S.F.Chernenko at the V.I. I. V. Michurin.
Description of the variety
This plant is included in the group of medium-fruited. The maximum height is 4.8 m. The crown of adult apple trees is round, the leaves are medium in size, have an oblong shape. There are jagged edges along the edges, but the foliage surface is smooth.
The main branches on the tree are obliquely vertical, while those that are separate grow at an angle of almost 90 degrees. At the base, the shoots are gray-green in color, in the rest they are red-brown. Flowers are below average in size, their shape is saucer-shaped. The color is almost white.
Features, pros and cons
The main advantage of this variety is the long storage of fruits under proper conditions. In addition, apples are delicious and versatile.
Of the shortcomings, it is especially necessary to highlight the fact that the marketability during transportation is maintained by 87%. The tree also begins to bear fruit after many years.
Ripening and fruiting
Renet Chernenko has a winter ripening period. Apples reach ripeness in September. The consumer period lasts from November to May. The crop can only be harvested by 7-8 years after planting.
Growing regions
This variety is grown in the North-West, Central, Volgo-Vyatka, Central Black Earth regions.
Yield
When a tree reaches the age of 15 years, about 62 kg of fruit can be harvested from it, and the maximum yield that has been recorded was 120 kg per tree.
Fruits and their taste
The fruits of Renet Chernenko can be eaten both fresh and delicious compotes and other foods and drinks can be prepared from them.
Apples have a greenish-yellow color, there is a slight blush. The shape is described as regular, flattened-rounded. The weight of one apple can vary from 110 to 180 grams.
The skin of the fruits of the described variety has roughness. It is dull and oily, with rusted subcutaneous spots.
Apples are sweet and sour, with white dense pulp. They can lie down after being harvested for 235 days.
Growing features
Planting begins by digging a hole with a diameter of twice the root system and a depth of about a meter. Insert the root system into the hole and lay out the roots, making sure that the graft is about 2-3 cm above ground level.
When the pit is filled with soil, water is used to remove any air pockets.A trellis is installed and a seedling is tied to it. Be sure to put a 2-3 cm thick mulch around each tree. It will help to retain moisture and suppress weeds, which consume not only water, but also nutrients from the soil.
Pollination
The described variety can only partially self-pollinate. For this reason, a pollinator must be present on the site. It is best to use the Wellsey Apple, North Sinup or Autumn Striped, which bloom in the same period as Renet Chernenko.
Top dressing
The optimum pH for apple trees is 6.0-6.5. If the soil is poor in trace minerals, it is best to bring the pH to 7.0 before planting. After 3-4 years, you will need to cover the ground with lime again.
For this particular variety, excess fertilization causes extreme vegetative growth, a decrease in the quantity, quality of fruit and an increase in the incidence of diseases such as rust, crown rot and powdery mildew. On the other hand, Renet Chernenko's nitrogen deficiency also leads to poor growth and low yields.
Therefore, it is recommended to use "8-12-12" or similar fertilizer in a slow release formula (preferably nine months slow release). One glass of fertilizer is applied in February in the first year after planting. If the gardener sees yellowing of the leaves or observes poor performance, add the same amount in May. Follow the same principle for the second year.
Frost resistance
This variety has a high frost resistance. For the winter, trees are mulched, young seedlings are thrown with leaves, spruce branches, you can cover them.
Diseases and pests
Renet Chernenko has good resistance to scab. But black and white rot may well appear. In the fight against them, it is worth removing and burning all affected shoots and fruits. No fungicides are used to treat black rot. However, it is worth using Captan and any sulfur-based products made specifically to combat this infection. It is better to prevent late blight, as this is the main cause of rot.
White rot is common at the end of the season.Be careful with this disease: if it attacks an apple tree, a 50% decrease in yield is expected. As soon as symptoms have been identified, treatment is immediately carried out.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
