Apple tree Pobeda (Pobeda Chernenko) for a long time pleases gardeners with delicious, juicy fruits that have a beautiful appearance. Trees are easy to grow and become a real asset in any garden.
Breeding history of the variety
An interesting variety was bred by the Russian Soviet breeder Semyon Fedorovich Chernenko at VNIIS im. Michurina by experimenting with the varieties Antonovka Obscenity and Pepin of London in the first half of the 20th century. In 1927, the researcher received a worthy new hybrid, which immediately went for testing in various regions (Tula, Kursk, Oryol and Voronezh).
Description of the variety
Vigorous plants have a sparse rounded crown with large leaves and strong skeletal branches. Shoots are fairly straight, not too thick, brown and slightly pubescent.
Features, pros and cons
Victory has many benefits, appreciated by even the most demanding gardeners:
trees bear fruit with a beautiful appearance;
dessert fruits have a universal purpose;
with proper care, the harvest is stable and rich;
decent scab resistance.
And also the variety has a number of disadvantages:
the first fruits can be tried only 5 years after planting the seedling;
the trees are quite large, occupy a lot of territory both in their "youth" and in their prime;
the fruits are not very well attached to the branches, so they must be removed in a timely manner;
has a short shelf life (in comparison with other winter varieties).
Ripening and fruiting
The fruiting period comes late - 5 years after planting the culture. Initially, it lasted about 10 years, but due to improvements that have improved this indicator, it has significantly decreased. Fruiting is increasing and annual.
You can harvest in the first half of September.
Growing regions
The variety is actively cultivated and fully reveals its advantages in the middle lane, in the North Caucasus and in the Crimea.
Yield
Victory gives a fairly large and high-quality harvest. For the 9th year of cultivation, the tree is able to please gardeners with 100 kg of fruits, at 12-18 years old, you can collect about 104 kg of apples from one apple tree.
Fruits and their taste
Large fruits are greenish in color and have a one-dimensional, flat-round shape. Their skin is thin and smooth, with large numerous subcutaneous punctures of a whitish color. One apple weighs about 200 g on average.
The pulp is greenish-white, extremely tender and fine-grained, very juicy, sweet and sour. The fruits have a tasting score of 4-4.2 points.
Under suitable conditions, apples can be stored until March. Their purpose is universal, so they can be consumed fresh, as well as prepared various dishes from fruits, preserves and marmalades, compotes and juices. The fruits tolerate transportation well.
Growing features
Growing a healthy and strong tree on the site means providing yourself with tasty and strong apples for many years. Taking care of apple trees is easy, but you should remember a few nuances of growing.
Pollination
Victory is a self-fertile variety, so it will be possible to collect a certain amount of fruits even if there are no other varieties near the tree that can help it in pollination. But in order for the harvest to be plentiful and of better quality, it is recommended to plant other trees near Victory. And you can also take out a compact apiary to the garden during flowering periods, or plant a crop directly next to it.
Top dressing
It is necessary to fertilize the tree during the season. Fertilizers are applied cyclically. There are several stages of feeding:
in the spring, Pobeda is fed with fertilizers, which contain nitrogen;
in the summer, phosphorus-potassium mixtures are used;
in autumn, compost is added to the trunk circle.
In summer, it is also useful to carry out mineral dressing on the leaf, this helps to improve the condition of the fruits and the tree itself.
Frost resistance
The variety tolerates low temperatures moderately and requires shelter for the winter. To do this, you need to lay mats made from hay on the root zone of the trees, while the trunks must be carefully wrapped using burlap, roofing felt, agrofibre or roofing material. Young seedlings should be protected using the tent method.
Diseases and pests
Victory is moderately resistant to various kinds of diseases and insects. Has medium scab resistance. With proper and timely care, trees can be saved from infection. But it is important to remember that when the climatic conditions are humid, the culture is affected extremely quickly and abundantly.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
Review overview
Gardeners note that the variety deserves their love primarily for its unpretentiousness. It is important to carry out timely pruning and feeding, and then wait for a bountiful harvest. Many reviews write that there are, indeed, extremely many fruits, they have a bright and rich sweet and sour taste and are suitable not only for fresh consumption, but also for making delicious jam.
