Many gardeners and farmers are trying to plant apple trees on the plot, which give high yields with a long shelf life. One of these is the Memory to a Warrior variety, which belongs to the class of late fruit crops and is characterized by a high biological value.
Breeding history of the variety
This variety was bred thanks to the efforts of breeders of the All-Russian Research Institute for Breeding Fruit Crops, headed by E. N. Sedov, in the 1970s, and was included in the State Register in 1997. An apple species was obtained by crossing Welsey and Antonovka ordinary. Zoned in the Central Black Earth Region (Kursk, Lipetsk, Oryol, Tambov and Voronezh regions).
Description of the variety
The memory of the Warrior apple tree is a fairly large and majestic tree, reaching a height of 3.5 meters. The fruit crop is characterized by a reverse pyramidal crown shape at a young age, which acquires a spherical appearance during the fruiting phase. The crown with moderate thickening looks very beautiful, as it stands out for the emerald color of the foliage.
Features, pros and cons
Fruit trees of this species are characterized by numerous features, thanks to which they are of great interest among gardeners and farmers who cultivate the Memory of a Warrior for industrial purposes.
Among the main advantages of the variety, one can point out the high taste of the fruit, good keeping quality (under the right conditions, up to 5-6 months) and transportation, stable and abundant yields that grow over the years, as well as resistance to scab.
The disadvantages of the culture include late fruiting and the huge dimensions of the trees, which require a lot of space.
Ripening and fruiting
During the period of active flowering, the crown is covered with large, light pink flowers with a bright aroma. The tree blooms for about 10 days (late May - early June). Most of the fruits are formed on the ringlets. Since the variety is winter, the fruiting period falls in September, and in some regions even at the beginning of October. Ripening of apples is uniform. In addition, the fruits keep well on their legs and do not crumble.
Growing regions
The variety was bred for cultivation in the Central Black Earth region of Russia, however, in recent years, the memory of a warrior apple tree grows well in other places.
Yield
The first harvest can be tasted for 3-4 years of tree growth. Subject to all the rules of care and a favorable climate, an adult tree gives up to 50-60 kg of fruits per season. Fruiting is regular, and the older the tree, the higher the yield.
Fruits and their taste
Apples are oval, and sometimes slightly flattened, endowed with barely noticeable ribbing, pronounced taste and average size (weight 100-200 grams).
The apples are golden yellow with noticeable dots and beet-colored stripes. The fruit tastes sweet and sour, quite juicy and slightly aromatic, without any foreign aftertaste. The peel of the fruit is strong, which ensures the safety of the apples, and without noticeable plaque. The pulp of the fruit is snow-white milky, sometimes interspersed. This apple variety is characterized by a high content of vitamin C and pectins in the fruit.
Growing features
Before planting apple seedlings, it is recommended to select the correct site. It should be well lit by the sun, and the groundwater should be deep. The soil is well dug up, which will improve air permeability, cleared of weeds and fed with fertilizers. The best place is considered to be fertile black soil or loam.
You can plant seedlings in the spring, when the soil is warmed up, but the buds have not yet swollen, or in the fall, 15-20 days before stable frosts, since the root system will take time to adapt. Annual trees are considered ideal for planting, as they adapt to the soil as quickly as possible.
Pollination
This type of fruit tree belongs to the class of self-fertile, so pollinators are indispensable. Pollinating trees should be located at a distance of 2-3 meters from the apple tree and bloom at the same time as this variety. Ideal donors for such a fruit crop are Antonovka ordinary, Welsey, Streifling.
Top dressing
Fertilizing a tree is one of the components of the necessary care for a fruit crop. This type of apple tree is not picky about frequent feeding. An optimally balanced feeding scheme consists of applying nitroammofoska under a tree in early spring, feeding with wood ash during the period of active flowering and ovary formation, as well as saturation with phosphorus-potassium components in the fall. Spraying foliage with minerals has a beneficial effect on the tree.
It is the autumn feeding that will well prepare the tree and its root system for the winter period. The near-stem zone should be well mulched with needles, sawdust and straw.
Frost resistance
The apple tree has good winter hardiness (it perfectly tolerates temperatures up to -35 degrees), so it quickly adapts to the weather conditions of the Central and Central Black Earth zone of the Russian Federation. In regions with more severe winters, cultivation on winter-hardy rootstocks is recommended.
Diseases and pests
The tree has a very high immunity to scab, but you should not forget about preventive measures. When pests appear, it is necessary to spray using special solutions. Most often, the tree is susceptible to the invasion of apple moths, silkworms, hawthorns, sapwoods.
Sometimes the tree is exposed to bitter pitting, which can be eliminated by spraying with calcium chloride. When a tinder fungus appears, it is necessary to carefully cut out the infected areas of the bark and disinfect it using copper sulfate.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
Review overview
The apple variety Memory of a Warrior is often found in personal plots, as well as in gardens where it is grown commercially, since the fruits have an excellent presentation, high taste and good keeping quality (up to 150 days) under the right storage conditions. Most gardeners note unpretentious care, quick adaptation to the soil and climatic conditions, as well as protection from scab.
Many housewives are attracted by the versatility of the variety, since apples make excellent blanks in the form of jam, marmalade, juices, and drying. The only thing that gardeners criticize is the late fruiting period, but the abundance of the harvest and the taste of apples smooth out this shortcoming.
