No matter how the newest varieties of plants are advertised, the varieties tested by experience should not be discounted either. The apple tree of Nedzvetskiy confidently confirms this thesis. And therefore, even novice summer residents or gardeners need to familiarize themselves with it as closely as possible.
Breeding history of the variety
The distant ancestor of the now famous apple tree was discovered by a prominent local historian and public figure Vladislav Nedzvetsky in the Tien Shan mountains at the beginning of the 19th century. The tree found there immediately attracted attention with the beauty of its fruits.
The collected samples were obtained by the prominent German botanist Georg Dick. He registered the new species in the catalog under the name of the discoverer. Then a number of large breeders actively worked with this apple tree, not excluding Michurin. A number of varieties based on the Nedzwiecki apple tree were created in the 1930s.
All descendants of the wild-growing specimen are distinguished by rich red flowers, but they may not coincide in other parameters.
Description of the variety
This plant has two officially fixed synonyms - Niedzwetzkyana and Paradise apple. The height of the tree can reach 8 m. Therefore, it is clearly visible and outwardly expressive - but high growth is not very convenient for picking fruits and leaving.
The apple tree of Nedzvetsky is characterized by a round or pyramid-like crown. Purple leaves can be seen immediately after they bloom. They are characterized by the edge.
Features, pros and cons
The apple tree of Nedzwiecki has both gastronomic and decorative value. Its spreading crown looks attractive in almost any environment. The trunk of the tree is visually powerful and wide. True, it can crack. When a crop is in bloom, its foliage turns green, and only the bottom remains the usual purple color.
The apple tree of Nedzvetsky may well become a substitute for sakura in areas with a harsh climate. It will look no less attractive. The culture manifests itself in the best way surrounded by fruit trees and shrubs. It must be borne in mind that it can be damaged by aphids. Scab damage is also quite likely.
The roots are very sensitive to cold weather. It is simply impossible to do without shelter for the winter. Fresh seedlings, even with careful observance of agricultural standards, often get sick. But all these problems are balanced out:
- high resistance to many pathologies and pests;
- accelerated growth;
- easy settlement in any area;
- minimum requirements for care;
- resistance to cold and arid conditions.
Ripening and fruiting
Removable ripeness of fruits on the Nedzvetsky apple tree is achieved in September and October. The tree will throw out the first buds at 4-5 years of development. But then it still does not bear much fruit. The first more or less decent harvests are usually harvested in the sixth season. Therefore, there is no need to talk about the early maturity of such a tree.
Flowering begins after foliage appears. This usually happens in early May or around the middle of it. But in very unfavorable weather, such a moment may shift towards the end of May. Flowering duration is from 10 to 16 days. Therefore, almost all owners have time to enjoy it.
Growing regions
You can cultivate this plant:
- in Crimea;
- in the North Caucasus;
- in the middle lane;
- with caution in some of the more northerly regions.
Yield
Although the apple tree of Nedzvetsky is prized primarily for its decorativeness, and not for its fertility, the collection is quite large. One tree can produce 35-50 kg of fruit. Important: the variety is sterile for itself. Therefore, you can count on good flowering and subsequent fruiting only if there are pollinating trees within a radius of 50-100 m.
Fruits and their taste
Apples can be eaten fresh. They are typically purple-purple in color. The size of one fruit is no more than 2 cm. It looks slightly spherical. The rind is covered with a characteristic waxy bloom, and the flesh is colored in a pink-purple tone.
Growing features
The apple tree of Nedzwiecki needs very active sunlight. Shading threatens that the tree will begin to wither and even die. The crop can grow successfully even on seriously saline or very acidic soil. For her, they are better suited, however:
- black soil;
- loam;
- sandy loam;
- clay.
It is necessary to avoid all places where underground waters come closer than 1.5 m to the surface. It is also worth considering the large width of the crown, because of which the plant can create shade for other plantings.
Wells are advised to dig at least 2-3 weeks before disembarkation. Fertilizers are recommended to be mixed with wood ash, which is guaranteed to taste to Nedzvetsky's apple trees. The distance to any other plant is at least 5-6 m.
The root collar should be raised to a height of 12-15 cm above the ground - this is the minimum value. For a garter, you can use stakes made of wood or metal pins. A newly planted seedling is watered with 20-30 liters of water. The soil should be compacted only with your hands, and even then not too actively. The surface of the planting hole is mulched with humus.
Top dressing
It is necessary to feed Nedzvetsky's apple tree:
- in spring - as soon as the frost ends firmly;
- in the summer months - when fruits are actively forming;
- in the fall - to prepare the tree for wintering.
For replenishment, both mineral and organic fertilizers are used. They are usually bred in warm water. Spraying with a solution of wood ash is also a good option. In the spring, it is recommended to use humus or highly diluted manure. At the beginning of summer, it is preferable to use nitrophoska.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
