Columnar apple trees are rarely found today on the plots and in the gardens of Russian citizens, although they take up much less space than traditional apple trees, and their yield is quite high. Nevertheless, there are such specimens, and one of them is the Moscow Necklace apple variety.
Breeding history of the variety
Domestic breeder, as well as scientist M.V. Kachalkin tried to create his own variety of columnar apple. The result of his experiments was the Moscow Necklace winter apple variety.
Description of the variety
The culture can be classified as semi-dwarfs and even dwarfs. The miniature crown allows the most economical use of space in the garden. As befits this variety, the tree looks quite interesting: in the form of a column on which beautiful apples grow. The height of the columnar apple tree is small: it grows up to 2-3 meters.
The root system of the tree is quite strong, stable, this makes it possible to transplant. The crown is dense, there are many leaves, there are side shoots, but there are few of them, and they are short. The barrel is smooth. The leaves are colored in dark green, resemble an ellipse in shape, there are short pointed tips. Flowering occurs with white flowers with a pink tint, they are round, medium in size.
Features, pros and cons
Moskovskoe Ozherelye is in good standing among gardeners due to its unique features.
Among the many advantages are the following:
- fairly high frost resistance;
- immunity to scab;
- high productivity;
- excellent taste of fruits;
- decorativeness of the tree itself.
There were some drawbacks, which you also need to know about:
- seedlings are quite expensive when purchased;
- the life cycle of the tree is very short;
- not too long period allotted for fruiting and limited to 15 years.
Ripening and fruiting
Moscow Necklace is referred to as winter crops. Fruits on the apple tree ripen late: in late September or early October.
The fruit culture is fast-growing. After the spring planting of the seedling, the first harvest will appear this year, although this approach is not approved by experts. If the planting is in the fall, then the crop will appear only in the second year. An interesting fact: for this variety, the first harvest will be only 6 apples from a tree. But every year this number increases, and the peak yield falls on the 7th year.
Growing regions
The apple variety in question is recommended to be planted in many regions of the Russian Federation. But this apple tree has acquired the greatest distribution among Siberian gardeners, and the middle lane is not lagging behind. This is all due to the high frost resistance of the culture.
Yield
The apple tree bears fruit regularly, without interruption. Up to 10 kg of fruit can be removed from each tree in a productive year. This is a good indicator for columnar varieties.
Fruits and their taste
The apples of the Moscow Necklace are large in size, spherical in shape. The size of each fruit ranges from 150 to 170 g. The pulp has a dense, fine-grained, creamy structure. Very juicy: if the apple falls, it will crack. The peel of apples is smooth, dense, shiny, dark red in color.
The composition has a lot of useful substances:
- titratable acids - 0.8%;
- organic acids - 0.8-1%;
- dietary fiber - 1.8%;
- pectins - up to 5%;
- sugar - 10%;
- dry matter - 25%;
- vitamin C - 3.6 mg / 100 g.
Apples are universal: they are tasty and healthy if they are eaten fresh, from a branch, and they are also perfect for drying and for harvesting.
Moscow Necklace belongs to the dessert varieties of apples. The fruit has a very pleasant sweet taste. The aroma is weak. According to experts, the Moskovskoe Ozherelye variety has one of the most delicious apples among winter varieties.
Growing features
To plant such an apple tree, you need to choose a site with good lighting, clay or sandy soil, black soil. The hole is dug quite deep: the root system of the seedling should be free. Drainage, compost, humus are laid out at the bottom of the hole.
Moskovskoe Ozherelye is a compact apple tree of small size, so many plants are often planted within one area. When planting several trees of the variety at the same time, it is necessary to maintain a distance between specimens of 1 meter.
To root a planted tree well, it should be watered with warm water for one month after planting.
Pollination
Moscow Necklace is a non-self-fertile apple variety. In order for the fruits to set, it will be necessary to plant pollinating varieties nearby. They should be columnar apple trees with a similar flowering period. At the same time, apple trees such as Vasyugan and President are suitable for the best pollination.
And in order to attract also pollinating insects, experienced gardeners spray flowers with sugar syrup during the flowering of apple trees.
Frost resistance
The apple tree of the variety in question is distinguished by a rather high frost resistance. The fruit crop tolerates very low temperatures, up to -45 degrees Celsius, and this is very necessary for cultivating the variety in the northern regions of Russia.
Diseases and pests
The columnar variety Moskovskoe Ozherelye is quite rarely affected by diseases, since it has excellent immunity. Therefore, the tree is not treated with chemicals based on chemistry.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
