Marina is an apple variety bred by the specialists of the Sverdlovsk Experimental Gardening Station. The variety was the result of crossing the Samotsvet and Nega apple trees. Marina quickly won the hearts of gardeners. It is popular for some of its features.
Description of the variety
Marina variety is distinguished by the following external characteristics:
tree of medium growth, up to 4 m in height;
crown of medium density and round shape;
leaves in the form of an ellipse, flat, bent down, matte, green color;
branches grow almost at right angles to the trunk, the bark is smooth, gray;
shoots are straight, have an edge, rounded in cross section;
flowers are compact, conical, white, pink buds.
Features, pros and cons
A feature of the variety can be called its undemandingness to agricultural technology, while it always brings a good harvest. And also the advantages include its high frost resistance, excellent keeping quality of fruits and resistance to the main apple enemy - scab. Among the minuses, the friability of the fruit should be noted.
Ripening and fruiting
The specified variety belongs to varieties with an autumn ripening period. You can remove completely ripe fruits at the end of August or in the first half of September. The bush bears the first fruits for 5 years. The frequency of fruiting is annual.
Yield
With the correct arrangement of trees, you can achieve a yield in excess of 200 c / ha.
Fruits and their taste
The apples are characterized by a light yellow color, their shape is flattened, rounded-truncated, and the weight is 90-110 g. In general, the fruits are small in size, with a smooth dry "waxy" skin. The taste is sweet and sour, the pulp is juicy, loose, coarse-grained. The main advantage of these apples is considered to be keeping quality up to 150 days, that is, apples can be stored until spring.
Growing features
The presented variety is allowed to be grown in the Volga-Vyatka region and in the Middle Urals. This is due to its high frost resistance. To make the tree feel comfortable on the site, follow the simple rules of agricultural technology.
Do not place the bush in a low-lying area or on a ridge with close groundwater flow.
The tree will thrive best in fertile, moist, drained soil. Black soil with weak acidity is suitable.
Treat the trunks from rodents for the winter.
Watering is done according to the usual scheme, but it is important to stop irrigation in mid-August so that the tree directs its forces to strengthen the branches in preparation for frost. The next time the bush is watered in late September - early October, when the leaves begin to fly around.
Pollination
This is a self-infertile variety, so it should be provided with artificial pollination. You can plant next to a variety with the same ripening period, whose pollen will be used for pollination. For example, Anis Sverdlovsky will do.
Top dressing
The first fertilizers are applied in the third year of the plant's life. When feeding, use the following scheme:
at the end of April, organic matter can be used as additional food, for example, rotted manure (10 kg / m2);
at the flowering stage, liquid fertilizers are suitable, for example, a mixture of potassium sulfate, urea, superphosphate;
during the period of fruit ovaries, use a solution from a complex composition;
after harvesting, fertilizers from superphosphate with potassium content are relevant.
Diseases and pests
As already mentioned, scab practically does not affect this apple tree. However, the tree can fall prey to other ailments, such as fruit rot or powdery mildew. In the first case, Topaz or Skor preparations are suitable for protection, in the second, Hom means.
Among the often infecting insects, the following stand out:
green aphid - a solution of tobacco and soap will help to cope with it;
red tick - it can be removed with Dicofol;
apple moth - treatment with chlorophos solution is suitable as a prophylaxis.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
