Early ripening apples of summer ripening are often distinguished by a pronounced sourness. The variety of Canadian breeders Quinti turned out to be sweet and aromatic.
Breeding history of the variety
Quinty is bred in Southern Ontario. In this part of the Canadian province of Ontario are the capital of the country Ottawa and the Central Experimental Station, created in the 19th century. Quinti appeared in 1964 as a result of crossing Red Melba and the old variety Crimson Beauty.
At the end of the 80s, Quinti was entered into the State Register of Breeding Achievements approved for use in the Russian Federation, and began to spread in Russia.
Description of the variety
The early ripening early variety Quinti is distinguished by a high-quality and regular harvest from large, beautiful, aromatic and tasty fruits of a red-orange hue. Apples can be transported, but they are poorly stored.
The plant is moderately susceptible to infections, but is often affected by scab. Low winter hardiness, but the variety easily tolerates periods of drought and heat.
Features, pros and cons
The tree is medium-sized, with a spreading sparse crown of smooth curved branches and dark green foliage.
Positive traits and features:
generous early flowering and fast ripening of apples;
good productivity;
great taste and attractive appearance of the fruit;
high drought and heat resistance;
immunity to powdery mildew;
easy care.
Disadvantages of the variety:
low and medium frost resistance;
low immunity to scab;
loss of presentation and taste during storage for more than 10 days.
Ripening and fruiting
Fruiting of this early ripening variety is summer - early and super early, falls on different decades of July, depending on the region. On the Lower Volga, Quinti's apples are harvested in mid-July. White filling, usual for Russian gardens, bears fruit 4-5 days later.
Growing regions
The humid continental climate of Southern Ontario differs significantly from the conditions of the rest of Canada. Quinti, developed for the warmest territory of this state, has become widespread in many countries of the world with a temperate climate. Surprisingly, it has become a successful commercial variety in Norway.
According to the State Register of the Russian Federation, the official regions of admission to breeding of Quinti are named: the North Caucasus, the Lower Volga region and the center of the Chernozem region. It is rather actively grown in the Krasnodar Territory, Astrakhan, Volgograd and Rostov Regions, Kabardino-Balkaria and North Ossetia. The variety feels good in the Kursk, Lipetsk and Voronezh regions.
Yield
Quinti has medium to high yields that grow with the age of the tree. Trees begin to bear fruit regularly from 2 years old (sometimes from 3 years old). An adult apple tree in a favorable season and with good agricultural technology gives 102-120 kg of fruits. About 86 centners are harvested per hectare.
It is recommended to eat Quinti fresh and process it quickly, the shelf life does not exceed 10 days (the fruits deteriorate and become soft, cottony). Apples can be dried, used for baking, making juices, jams, preserves.
Fruits and their taste
The fruits in the harvest are practically uniform in shape (round and elongated-conical) and size (large and medium). The average weight of an apple is 160-180 g, but with regulation of flowering it can reach 200-220 g. Ribbing and side seam are practically absent.The color of greenish-yellow fruits, as it ripens, acquires a bright red-orange blush with a raspberry tinge.
The skin is of medium thickness, smooth and glossy, and may have a slight waxy coating. The aromatic grainy pulp has a greenish to creamy color, very juicy, dense, with a dessert taste.
100 g of pulp contains about 8.4 g of vitamin C and about 11% of the composition is the sum of sugars. Tasters' assessment: 4.6 out of 5 points.
Growing features
The variety is not too whimsical, but it is better to choose an even and sunny place, and the soil is light (loose loam). Planting is carried out in the fall, in a hole 60-80 cm deep and up to 100 cm in diameter, the trunk circle is mulched, phosphorus-potassium preparations are used from fertilizers.
Pruning of branches is carried out periodically to avoid thickening of the crown. We should not forget about preventive treatment for insects.
Pollination
In early to mid-May, large, fragrant white flowers bloom abundantly throughout the tree. Quinti is a self-infertile variety that requires the neighborhood (5 m) of cross-pollinators suitable for flowering periods, these are varieties: Gala, Idared, Everest, Vista Bella and others.
Frost resistance
In southern territories with mild winters, the variety feels good, but frosts in the middle lane and the Black Earth Region require measures to cover the trunk and rhizomes. The limiting temperatures are –20… 22 ° C.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery.Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
