The best plant varieties are far from always bred abroad or in Moscow breeding establishments. A vivid confirmation of this is the apple variety Kovrovoye, developed in the Urals. It will be useful for gardeners to get acquainted with its general description and learn the nuances of cultivation.
Breeding history of the variety
All developers of the plant are employees of the Ural Institute of Horticulture and Potato Growing. The work on it was carried out by the spouses Mazunins and V.I. Putyatin. The variety Vydubetskaya Plakuchaya was taken as a basis, which was subjected to free pollination. The main task of the breeders was to create a particularly miniature tree. The culture has no alternative names.
Description of the variety
Apple-tree Carpet is a high-yielding fruit tree. Its height, depending on the nuances of cultivation, can reach a maximum of 1.5 or 2 m. The stem of this variety is absent, and even with the most careful observation it cannot be found. It is quite possible to cover Carpet under the snow in winter. The taste and appearance are quite decent, even though there are hundreds of competing varieties.
Features, pros and cons
The branches of such an apple tree are close to the surface of the earth. They are directed horizontally. The foliage is bright green, which looks very attractive. Shoots are strong and mechanically resistant. In favor of the variety says:
resistance to many diseases, including fungi that destroy other apple trees;
haste;
excellent collection (subject to quality care);
decent resistance to harsh climatic influences;
excellent commercial quality of fruits;
immunity to many insects and other pests.
Gardeners often complain that the quality of apples deteriorates with strong heat. But the same applies to any other plants - these are elementary physical and biological points. Complete snow cover creates a problem and can damage branches and trunk. Therefore, you have to appear on the site at the very beginning of spring and release the apple tree from the load (and you may also need to do this during a snowy winter). Another weakness is that this variety is not suitable for lowland cultivation, it needs warm sunny places.
Ripening and fruiting
The plant is fast-growing (begins to yield for 3-4 years). Removable ripeness is reached by the end of July. If the weather is worse than normal, then sometimes you have to wait for the first decade of August. In the early years of cultivation, Carpet bears fruit regularly. In the future, this regularity may be violated.
Yield
One plant of the Carpet variety can produce up to 60 kg of apples. With such a small growth, such fertility is unique. That is why we can say that culture has no analogues.
Fruits and their taste
The apples of such a plant have a universal character. They are distinguished by their greenish-yellow color. The main part is covered with a rich bright red blush. Other important features:
flat-rounded shape of fruit;
weight from 170 to 200 g;
tender, slightly oily peel;
creamy coarse-grained pulp;
sweet and sour taste;
shelf life 60 days;
dry matter content - 16%;
the share of sugars - 11.9%;
2.1% pectins.
Growing features
The plant is designed for sunny places. Shaded trees produce smaller fruits and may even hurt. It is not allowed to use areas where groundwater approaches 2 m and closer to the surface. Airing is important, but it is better to avoid even small drafts. The choice of soil is at the discretion of gardeners, it is necessary to reject only swampy, acidified areas that are clearly unsuitable for most cultivated plants.
The root collar must be kept above the surface at all times. Otherwise, it is impossible to preserve the properties of the rootstock. The preparation of the planting pits should be completed 3 weeks before their use. Saplings are supposed to be placed on drainage. Each seedling is watered (using 15-25 liters of water, taking into account the properties of the soil and the weather); for moisture to be better retained in the ground, mulch is needed.
Pollination
The variety is not self-fertile. To cultivate it, you must use apple trees:
Sokolovskoe;
Grounded;
Snowdrop.
Frost resistance
The cold resistance of the Kovrov apple tree is quite high, but this does not relieve the owners of the plots of the obligation to properly prepare for winter. Watering trees after mid-August is undesirable. An exception is made only for water charging irrigation. It is combined with the last September bait.
To protect from the cold, the trunks can be overlaid with:
spunbond;
spruce branches;
burlap;
agrofiber.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
