To get a high-quality harvest of Kandil Orlovsky apples, you should take responsibility for caring for this tree. Timely watering, fertilizing, pruning - all this allows the gardener to increase the yield of the variety.
Breeding history of the variety
The work on the breeding of Kandil Orlovsky was carried out by specialists from the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for the Breeding of Fruit Crops.
Description of the variety
The trees have a rounded shape, the crown is not dense, rather medium in density. The foliage is small, medium, has an oblong shape, similar to an egg. Their apex is helical, slightly twisted. The shade of the greenery is dark, saturated. There is shine and wrinkles on the foliage surface.
Branches depart from the main trunk almost at an angle of 90 degrees, of which there are not so many, and they all differ in curvature. Shoots of medium thickness, rounded in cross section, geniculate, brownish brown.
When the plant blooms, small flowers appear, the petals of which are weakly closed. The color is pink, the shape is flat.
Features, pros and cons
The described variety is appreciated for the attractiveness of the fruits and regular fruiting. However, today Kandil Orlovsky can be found less and less, the reason for this was the late ripening of the fruits.
Ripening and fruiting
Kandil Orlovsky belongs to winter varieties; apples are removed from the tree only by mid-September.
Growing regions
This variety of apples can be grown both in the Moscow region and in the south, it takes root well in the Urals and in the northern regions, since it is able to withstand low air temperatures.
Yield
With high-quality care, timely watering and top dressing, the trees of Kandil Orlovsky give a stable large harvest.
Fruits and their taste
This is a fast-growing tree with a high marketability of fruits, which are consumed exclusively fresh.
Apples have a greenish-yellow color with a crimson blush on the surface. The shape of the apples is oblong-conical, there are ribs and a slight slope. One apple weighs about 120 grams.
The skin is glossy and smooth. There are few subcutaneous dots under it, they are medium in size, but clearly visible, gray.
The taste, like most winter varieties, is sweet and sour. The pulp is white, has a greenish tint. It is very delicate, slightly grainy, rather juicy.
After harvest, the fruits can lie until mid-February.
Growing features
The described variety is medium-sized.
Root rot in this variety can be the result of a fungal attack. The most common is late blight. Root decay can also be caused by waterlogging.Dying off of branches can be another symptom of the root problem described above, as the tree struggles to absorb water through its poorly functioning root system, but fails.
New apple trees should be encouraged to grow rapidly in the first years after planting. Top dressing is applied in the pre-sowing year, during planting, and foliar dressing is done if necessary. It is important to monitor the state of the apple tree foliage in order to understand when there is a deficiency of a particular trace element in the soil.
Kandil Orlovsky loves the sun, like most apple trees, and does not like waterlogged soil, a draft. Based on these recommendations, it is worth choosing a quality landing site. Not only good drainage in the planting pit, but also planting of seedlings on a hill helps to get rid of excess moisture. It is not necessary to plant trees close to others, which are higher, since they give the plant unnecessary shade, and from it, in turn, the yield and quality of the fruits suffer.
Be sure to check the soil a year or two before planting as pH adjustment may be required. Few people realize that soil acidity affects tree nutrient uptake and yield. If the soil is too acidic, add lime.
Pollination
Pollinators must be present on the site, because in bad weather, bees and other insects may simply not be able to cope with the task. At a distance of no more than 30 meters, varieties of apple trees are planted, which bloom in the same period as Kandil Orlovsky.
An excellent alternative way to solve the pollination problem is to plant another variety on the apple tree.
Top dressing
The gardener should pay special attention to fertilizing during the planting year. This is the best time to add organic matter, phosphorus, potassium and lime to the soil. All of them are necessary for the described variety to increase yields in the future.
Manure is best applied a year before planting Kandil Orlovsky. It will provide the soil with the necessary amount of nutrients for the apple tree. Do not put it directly in the planting hole or trench, as it is so easy to burn the roots.
For the described variety, the required level of nutrients in the soil is:
12-20 ppm phosphorus;
120-150 ppm potassium;
100-250 ppm magnesium;
1000-5000 ppm calcium.
To correct magnesium deficiency, dolomite limestone is used, which also increases the pH in acidic soils. If lime is not required, potassium magnesia sulfate is used. It is best laid out in the form of a strip under a tree, at a distance of 6 centimeters from the trunk.
Sometimes apple trees of the described variety are deficient in calcium, which negatively affects the fruits. In this case, it is worth using foliar spraying after pruning the tree with products with a high content of this element.
Frost resistance
Kandil Orlovsky is a winter-hardy plant.
Diseases and pests
Kandil Orlovsky has a high resistance to scab, but this does not mean that other diseases are not terrible for the variety.
From rot, rust and other fungal infections, fungicides are successfully used today. The dosage and rules for use are described in detail in the instructions for the drugs.
Insecticidal soap, garden oil or a folk remedy - an infusion of garlic will perfectly help against insects.
Any treatment is carried out in early spring, first before the buds appear, and then several times during the growing season. Disinfection is not carried out at the stage of fruiting, and even more so at harvesting. It is best to choose a dry day, calm weather. It is imperative to look at the forecast so that it does not rain in the near future, otherwise there will be no sense from such prevention.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
