The Apple tree Chosen is a fairly common variety on the territory of the Volga region and the North-West region of Russia. Many gardeners appreciate it for its frost resistance, good yield, relative unpretentiousness to growing conditions and excellent taste of the fruit.
Breeding history
The chosen one was bred by crossing the varieties Antonovka ordinary and Bellefleur-Chinese. Breeding work was carried out in the middle of the twentieth century on the territory of the Moscow State University. Lomonosov. The breeders were faced with the task of creating a new, more frost-resistant, high-yielding variety with improved taste qualities of fruits. The breeders S. Isaev, V. Waterlian and G. Limberger brilliantly coped with this. As a result, the Chosen Apple tree received a tasting score of 4.8 points, which is an excellent result.
Description of the variety
The Apple tree Chosen is a fairly large fruit tree. Its height can vary from 3 to 6 m. The crown is rather thick, rounded. The branches are thick, strong, located mostly horizontally, due to which a massive rounded crown is created. Shoots have a skeletal structure.
Leaves are oblong in shape, have jagged edges. The central vein stands out clearly. On the reverse side, they are rather densely pubescent. Due to this, they seem to be quite thick and dense.
Features, pros and cons
The main feature of the variety is the thickening of the crown and the need to trim it periodically. This has a positive effect on fruiting.
Among the disadvantages, many gardeners note that the shelf life of fruits rarely exceeds 30 days. Nevertheless, the Chosen One is excellent for creating winter preparations and conservation.
It is worth noting that when grown in conditions of high humidity, the apple tree of this variety is often exposed to scab and powdery mildew, therefore, preventive measures should be followed more carefully, and at the slightest suspicion of an ailment of the fruit tree, treat it with bactericidal preparations.
Among the advantages, it should be noted that the Chosen apple tree is quite frost-resistant, therefore, with proper shelter for the winter, it feels great even in Siberia and the Urals.
Many gardeners are pleased that this varietal variety annually brings record yields of fruits that have excellent taste both fresh and processed.
Ripening and fruiting
The apple tree Chosen One begins to bear fruit 4-5 years after planting. As a rule, ovaries appear on young shoots. If you do not have patience and do not remove the first ovaries, the tree will develop rather slowly, and you can wait for the first full harvest in about 10 years. Therefore, in the first 2 years of fruiting, you need to get rid of the ovaries. Then, already for 6 years, it will be possible to appreciate the taste and bountiful harvest of the Chosen One.
An important aspect when growing this variety is timely pruning. Only on a thinned crown, where enough sunlight enters, will there be a large and healthy ovary.
The Chosen One begins to bloom in May. Abundant flowering, pale white shade, sometimes slightly pinkish. With an early onset of warming in the Volga region and to the south, buds may swell in April as well. Then fruiting will move to a slightly earlier date: late August - early September.
Yield
The Apple tree Chosen is a high-yielding variety. With proper care and timely pruning, you can stably remove up to 80 kg of fruits from the tree. Under favorable climatic conditions and fertile soil, the yield can reach 130 kg per bush. It is noteworthy that such a high yield is not periodic, from year to year, and does not depend on weather conditions, but is a stable indicator.
Fruits and their taste
The Chosen One's fruits are an excellent dessert and are perfect for fresh consumption. Once removed from the tree, they retain their freshness for up to 1 month. During processing, the pulp of apples does not lose its structure, remains the same tender and sweet, so the variety is perfect for making jams and compotes, as well as applesauce.
The apples are round, slightly flattened, slightly ribbed. The color of the fruit is yellow, with reddish veins throughout the area. The pulp is sweet with a slight sourness, has a fine grain, pale cream color.
Growing features
The chosen one prefers fertile black earth soils. It will be bad for an apple tree to grow in swampy or areas with a high groundwater table, therefore, for planting, you need to choose hills or areas remote from water bodies.
A tree can be planted in open ground in the spring, before the buds ripen, or in the fall, after the site has been cleaned and prepared for wintering. This moment is very important, since pathogenic bacteria or pests can hide in the fallen leaves, to which a young seedling is vulnerable.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
