If the summer cottage or garden plot is very small, then it is recommended that fruit trees, in particular apple trees, be selected more compact. The best option would be a columnar landing. One of the most popular among gardeners is the columnar apple variety Dialog, which will delight you with delicious apples in the summer.
Breeding history of the variety
Work on the development of an early-ripe apple variety was carried out by Russian breeders in the early 1990s. By crossing the species KB102 and Brusnichnoe, a new variety called Dialog was obtained. We worked on the creation of a productive and early summer variety of Kichina and Kachalkin. This species was entered into the State Register in 2004. The Dialogue was zoned for the Central region (Smolensk, Ryazan, Moscow, Bryansk, Tula, Ivanovo and Kaluga regions).
Description of the variety
Apple-tree Dialog is a medium-sized, fast-growing tree, reaching a height of 2.5 meters, with a compact columnar crown, the volume of which is about 50 cm. The crown is well thickened with foliage. The root system of the tree is shallow, so thorough loosening of the soil is undesirable. The period of productive growth and development of the tree is about 15 years.
Features, pros and cons
The columnar early summer apple tree has many features and benefits that make it popular with gardeners and farmers. The main advantages of a fruit crop include winter hardiness, early fruiting, high yield rates, despite the columnar appearance of the tree, excellent taste of the fruit, as well as sufficient immunity to scab. Among the minuses of the tree, one can point out the short storage time of the fruits (about 1 month), poor resistance to drought and the high cost of seedlings.
Ripening and fruiting
The active flowering phase occurs in May. During this period, the compact tree is covered with snow-white pink flowers with a bright aroma. Experts recommend plucking all flowers in the first year. Fruiting begins in the last days of July and continues until the end of summer. During this period, the compact tree is covered with small amber apples. Maturation occurs on the ringlets. The apples ripen evenly and do not fall off the tree. The first fruits can be tried in the first year of growth, but the tree bears fruit well only for 4-5 years.
Growing regions
The entire central part of Russia is considered the optimal growing area for the Dialog variety. In addition, in recent years, this species has been massively planted on the territory of Ukraine and Belarus. In regions with severe frosts, apple trees are grown under warming conditions on frost-resistant rootstocks.
Yield
The yield of the variety is quite high, despite the dwarf culture class. Fruiting is stable, annual. With proper care and suitable climatic conditions, up to 15 kg of apples can be harvested from one mature tree. The most abundant harvests are observed when the tree is 5-10 years old.
Fruits and their taste
Dialog apples have a small size (weight 70-100 grams), a regular flat-round shape, and a beautiful yellow-amber color with a barely noticeable blush. The fruit has a thin, but firm and smooth skin, which ensures the safety and transportability of apples. The palatability of the fruit is at a high level. The taste is rich, sweet and sour, where sourness dominates more, without astringency. The pulp is snow-white and juicy. This apple variety is universal, so the fruits are eaten fresh, as well as as preparations (conservation, drying, freezing).
Growing features
Columnar culture Dialogue needs proper planting, there are some peculiarities. The soil should be fertile, loose, breathable, with neutral acidity, without heaviness. With increased acidity, liming of the soil is carried out. An ideal location would be a sunny area, protected from drafts and strong gusty winds. The selected area is thoroughly cleared of weeds and other debris.
Planting seedlings, annual trees adapt better, it is possible in early spring, when the buds have not blossomed and the earth is warmed up, or in the fall, about a month before stable frosts, which will allow the root system to adapt to the cold. The distance between seedlings should be at least 1 m, and between pollinating trees 2-3 meters. Young seedlings are recommended to be tied to a stable support so that they are not damaged in case of strong winds.
Pollination
Variety Dialog is self-fertile, so pollinating trees are indispensable. The trees must be grown in the same area as the Dialog apple tree. For donors, the flowering time should coincide with this type of apple tree, it does not matter if these are ordinary trees or columns. The following varieties are considered ideal pollinating trees: President, Conference, Cheburashka.
Top dressing
Fertilizers need to be applied according to a certain scheme. Urea or saltpeter is introduced in early spring. During the flowering period, the tree needs superphosphates and calcium sulfate. When the fruits ripen, it is recommended to add nitrophoska and sodium humate. At the end of autumn, it is worth preparing the tree for winter. For this, organic and potassium-phosphorus fertilizers are introduced into the zone of the root system. When feeding, do not forget that the apple-tree-column is half the size of a standard tree, so the dosage of fertilizers should be adjusted accordingly.
Frost resistance
Winter resistance of the variety is high, however, it is recommended to carry out the procedure for warming the root system. For this, spruce branches are used, which cover the periosteal zone, and the trunk itself is wrapped in burlap. All this is removed with the arrival of spring.
Diseases and pests
The tree's immunity to scab and powdery mildew, as well as to many pests, is very strong, but prevention is needed. As a preventive measure, spraying with special solutions is used to scare off rodents and flying pests.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
Review overview
The apple-tree-column Dialog is a frequent visitor to the plots of summer residents, therefore there are quite a few reviews about this variety, analyzing which, one can draw a number of conclusions. First of all, it is noted that the apple tree is unpretentious in care, the main thing is to follow the rules of agricultural technology. And the compactness of trees allows them to be planted in the smallest household plots. In addition, the tree produces bountiful harvests of incredibly tasty, sweet and sour apples.
