Altynai belongs to rare varieties of apple trees, therefore it is not grown in all regions. Apples from this tree have an attractive appearance and large size.
Breeding history of the variety
The variety was bred by the Scientific Research Institute of Horticulture of Siberia named after V.I. M. A. Lisavenko. When crossing, Altai Velvet and Phoenix Altai were used.
Description of the variety
As the tree grows, its crown becomes rounded. The foliage density is average, the leaves themselves are ovoid. There is a small, sharp process at the end of each leaf. The shade of the leaves is green, matte. There is slight pubescence at the edges.
Branches branch off at right angles from the trunk. A distinctive feature of the variety is the abundance of twigs and ringlets. The dark brown shoots are also pubescent, they are thick and straight. It is a self-fertile, medium-sized variety.
Features, pros and cons
Among the advantages of this variety are:
- winter hardiness;
- scab resistance;
- the regularity of the harvest.
The only but significant disadvantage is the rarity of the variety.
Ripening and fruiting
Fruits ripen in autumn and mature in mid-September. In the fourth year, you can already harvest.
Growing regions
This variety is grown in the garden only in the Altai Territory, in other regions it is very rare.
Yield
Productivity is estimated for Gorno-Altaysk. By the seventh year, the Altynai tree yields about 20.9 kg of ripe fruits.
Fruits and their taste
The versatility of these apples suggests that they can be eaten both fresh and various kinds of offal can be prepared from them. Including compotes, preserves, jams. The main color is light yellow, the cover is pink. Most of the surface is streaked.
The apples are round, weighing from 65 to 142 grams. According to the filter, these fruits are classified as small. White flesh with green veins is hidden under the skin. It is very juicy and dense. The apples of this variety are sweet and sour to taste, they have a pleasant aroma. The fruit can lay up to 120 days after harvest.
Growing features
Altynai grows best in warm climates with long daylight hours and good air circulation. The best location is usually on the north side of the house. Apple trees need breathable soil, so light to medium textured soils are ideal. This variety does not grow in heavy clay soil. Drafts and planting near large trees that provide shade should also be avoided. Lack of enough light negatively affects the quality of the fruit.
It is generally best to plant apple trees in the spring, but if you live in an area with mild autumn and humid air during the winter months, planting can also be done in the fall.The seedlings are buried six weeks before the first frost so that the tree can take root before winter.
Pollination
Altynai is self-fertile, but pollination is important for the variety, so there must be at least one apple of another variety on the site. You can get vaccinated. Poor pollination is one of the main reasons for declining yields, so trees will bear more fruit when cross-pollinated.
Frost resistance
The variety has average frost resistance.
Diseases and pests
Powdery mildew often affects the foliage and fruits of apple trees. If left untreated, the disease will lead to a deterioration in the health of the tree. You can help the plant cope with this disease by applying a fungicide. Spraying takes place in early spring, when the leaves are just beginning to grow.
The variety perfectly resists scab, but it can be affected by a monilial burn. Of the pests, the fruits can attack caterpillars, larvae of May beetles, and birds often fly.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
