Apple tree Idared is a good variety that is popular in the south of the country. Possesses versatile qualities for growing it for sale.
Breeding history of the variety
Apple tree Idared bred from varieties Jonathan and Wagner in 1935 by breeders from the United States. Wagner is used as a pollen donor tree for pollination in order to get a good quality harvest.
Description of the variety
These trees are not very tall. Their main growth occurs in the first 10 years, while the apple trees are still young. Mature trees can grow up to 3.2 meters in height.
Their crown is sprawling round spherical in shape. The branches are gray-brown in color, growing densely, between them and the trunk, an angle of 45 degrees. The arrangement of fruits on the branches is always uniform.
The foliage is dark green. The leaves are oblong, their base is pointed with a distinct tip. It blooms with pinkish flowers, shaped like small saucers.
Features, pros and cons
The advantages of this variety include high yield, good marketability, attractive appearance and large fruit size.
The disadvantages include poor resistance to certain diseases. Such as powdery mildew and scab. And also the fact that this species does not tolerate frost well.
Ripening and fruiting
Idared is considered a late apple variety. Its fruiting falls at the end of September. The ripening period for him is winter. After planting, the apple tree begins to bear fruit for about 5-6 years, reaching an average size.
Growing regions
It grows in southern regions with a fairly warm climate. This variety has taken root very well in Poland, where it is the most popular for export cultivation. This species grows both in Ukraine and in the south of our country - in the Krasnodar Territory. It is also grown at home, in the United States.
Yield
Possesses high productivity. Bears fruit regularly. Fruit weight is large enough. Each branch of the apple tree is evenly strewn with apples. Mature trees yield crops weighing up to 100 kg. In the Kuban, yields are 300-400 c / ha.
Fruits and their taste
The apples are round in shape with a conical edge, light green in color with pronounced crimson stripes and strokes. Large enough. They have a sweet and sour taste, with a weak aroma. The pulp of the fruit is juicy, dense at the time of harvesting, becomes fine-grained over time, and at the end of the shelf life - completely friable. The weight of one apple reaches 170 g.
These apples are good not only fresh, but also for making jams, preserves and compotes. And also for the preparation of dried fruits.
Growing features
In the process of growing an apple tree, it is required from time to time to loosen the ground between plantings and at the roots. In this way a good air exchange is created and weeds are also destroyed. To obtain a high-quality harvest, timely watering must be carried out immediately after planting young seedlings and already adult apple trees in dry weather. And also fertilizing and pest control should be done.
The care of Idared includes pruning to reduce crown density and to remove bad, broken or diseased branches.
Pollination
The pollen from the flowers of this apple variety is quite viable, but artificial pollination is required to obtain a high-quality, timely harvest. Alone, this species cannot bear fruit well. For pollination, other varieties of apple trees should be planted nearby. Best suited for this are Wagner and Red Delicious, as well as Kuban spur.
Top dressing
After planting for about a year, the seedlings are not fed or fertilized with anything. The soil still has enough nutrients for further growth. Fresh manure should not be added to the soil during planting, it may burn the roots of the tree.
Then fertilized with potassium sulfate in the spring. Young trees in autumn and spring are watered with nitrogen fertilizing and treated outside the roots with microelements. It should be noted that mineral fertilizers must not be allowed to get on the roots.
When digging, peat and humus are added, this happens in the fall.
Frost resistance
This apple variety has an average level of frost resistance. It does not tolerate cold climates and low temperatures. Frost has a negative effect on this type of apple trees. It takes a lot of effort and time to maintain a good harvest during a damp and cold summer.
Diseases and pests
Possesses good resistance to diseases such as brown spot. But it hardly resists scab and powdery mildew.
To destroy pests and prevent diseases, trees are treated with copper sulfate, "Fundazol", Bordeaux liquid. And also infusions of herbs such as wormwood, pepper.
Idared apple fruits have good keeping quality and long shelf life - up to 150-180 days under conditions of additional cooling. And also the density and large size contribute to their distribution throughout the world. The marketability of these apples is 88-92%, of which 50% are of the first grade and 10-15% are of the highest grade. Idared is an ideal species for crossing and producing new quality apple varieties.
The apple tree is a popular fruit crop among gardeners. It can be found in many summer cottages. But at the same time, such trees are often affected by various diseases. It is very important to recognize the disease in time and carry out the necessary procedures for a speedy recovery. Otherwise, the fruits will be spoiled, and the tree itself may die altogether.
