Features of apple tree wood
Few have thought about purchasing household items and even furniture made from apple wood. Other species are usually popular - pine, oak, and so on. However, apple wood is undeservedly deprived of attention - it is quite hard, durable and has a low level of abrasion. On top of that, it is affordable and affordable. Even parts made from it extend the life of most wood products. Read about the other features of apple wood, as well as what can be made from it, in our article.
Basic properties
Apple wood is classified as scattered-vascular sound breeds. The core of this type of wood is reddish and brown. The sapwood (the outer part of the trunk, which is located immediately under the bark) of the apple tree is relatively wide, has yellow and pink hues. As a rule, with good wood, you can see a clear boundary separating the core and sapwood. However, there are exceptions - in rare cases, the kernel and sapwood are painted in the same color.
Annual rings, which, as you know, increase their number by one with each year of the plant's life, are twisting, irregular in shape. The width of the annual rings is also non-uniform. The rings are separated by thin light layers. It is the drawing that is formed by these rings that is appreciated by the masters most of all.
Apple wood has great hardness, it is very dense. Unfortunately, it can dry out pretty quickly. This material is practically indestructible even after repeated use.
Treatment
As a rule, trees not older than 30 years are used for processing and further sale. It is believed that the wood of such specimens best meets the characteristics required for production. If the tree is older than this age, then the raw material can be loose, rot is possible in places.
It is best to cut the tree with a saw. This will reduce the risk of chips and potholes. It is important to keep the transverse pattern of the wood intact. In general, wood processing does not require a relatively large investment and does not take much time. Includes the following steps.
- Wood is dried first... First, the material is dried under a canopy in the fresh air. After the moisture percentage reaches 20, the next stage begins.
- The wood continues to dry, but already indoors. The building, of course, should not be too humid.
- Next comes the final stage of processing - grinding and polishing. The material is also burnished. At this stage, various oils (usually linseed) are applied to the already sawn boards in order to increase the strength of the material. This improves the characteristics of the web and also gives a beautiful color.
Wood processing is a waste-free production - most of it goes to the manufacture of various items, and the leftovers are used as firewood for heating and smoking.
Application
If the cut apple tree is older than 30 years of age, then it is allowed to firewood. Such wood, as mentioned above, is not suitable for the manufacture of various items. Sometimes it is even used for smoking. The apple tree has practically no resin - thanks to this, no soot is released and no soot remains.
Sometimes it happens that the apple tree begins to grow in a helical way. To put it simply, the barrel twists into the sky, as it were. From the trunk of such a tree, you can make beautiful boxes, boxes, boards, figurines and so on. A similar phenomenon is called curliness, the wood of the trunks of such trees is distinguished by a peculiar beauty - an unusual pattern.
From the lowest and widest part of the trunk (butt), they make the same boxes, turned products, seats for stools.
Various crafts are also made of wood, on which traces of growth are visible. Most of them make smoking pipes, writing utensils. Making dishes from an apple tree was quite popular in antiquity. Spoons were especially popular.
From a general point of view, all products made from wood, in addition to the small parts mentioned above, can be divided into the following two categories.
- Floor coverings... The parquet made of this material has a beautiful shade and an attractive pattern. Buyers note the fact that with proper processing, the parquet does not crack and retains a beautiful shine for several decades.
- Furniture decor. Apple furniture can be expensive. Mostly wood is used to decorate furniture.
Among other products, one can mention handles for axes, rulers, elements of musical instruments, brooches, bracelets, buckles.
Now such material is even used for the manufacture of computer screens and other elements of electronic products.
It must be remembered that wood dries quickly. Simply put, all products made from it can crack after a while. But some crafts are boiled in oil or linseed oil - this way you can strengthen them, and they are unlikely to crack after that. Unfortunately, this can only be done with small items.
