The Vavilov Memory variety is not a new variety. Differs in good frost resistance and immunity, perfectly tolerates hot climate and sudden changes in weather. The crop is consumed fresh, canned, frozen and dried. Cherries are used for growing in an orchard and for creating beautiful landscape compositions around the house. Suitable for industrial cultivation.
Breeding history
The variety was bred on the basis of the All-Russian Research Institute of Genetics and Breeding of Fruit Plants named after I. I. V. Michurin by breeders S. V. Zhukov, E. N. Kharitonova. Included in the State Register in 1985.
Description of the variety
The tree is vigorous, reaches a height of 4-5 m, with a wide pyramidal crown of medium thickening. The bark of the trunk is grayish brown, cracks appear on it with age. Branches are greenish brown, curved, not too thick. The leaves are large, elliptical, with a pointed tip, matte, dark green, pubescent below, serrated edge. Flowers are large, up to 4.5 cm in diameter, white or pinkish, single or collected in inflorescences of 2-3 pcs. Cherry blooms early, but the timing of flowering is influenced by the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the growing region. Grows well on different rootstocks. The species is characterized by high regeneration. The tree lives for about 30 years.
Fruit characteristics
The cherries are large, weighing 3.6-4.3 g, rounded, burgundy, the flesh is dense and juicy, the stone is large, well separated. It is convenient to transport berries over long distances. At a temperature of +14 degrees, they can be stored for a couple of weeks, they can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
Taste qualities
Taste sweet and sour, refreshing, sugar content - 12.19%, vitamin C - 21.65 mg per 100 g. Tasting score - 4.3 points.
Ripening and fruiting
Cherries begin to bear fruit 4 years after planting. It is considered mid-season in terms of ripening. The berries ripen at the same time, from about 15 to 25 July. In southern climates, you can harvest as early as late June.
Yield
13-16 kg are removed from one adult tree, in favorable years - 20-22 kg.
Growing regions
The species is recommended for planting in the Central Black Earth and Lower Volga regions of Russia. Can be grown throughout the middle lane and in southern climates. It is not advised to plant the variety in Siberia and in more northern regions.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
It is a self-fertile species. If you plant Turgenevka or Rovesnitsa cherries as pollinators, you can expect a good harvest.
Landing
The crop can be planted in autumn and spring. For a seedling, a well-lit area on an elevation, protected from the winds, is chosen, near a wall or a blank fence. Seedlings are placed from each other and other fruit crops at a distance of 4 m. Groundwater should be located no closer than 2 m from the soil surface. The variety is not planted next to apple trees.
The pit is made 60x60 cm in size and with a depth of about 80 cm, 2-3 buckets of water are poured inside.Garden soil from the pit is mixed with humus, manure, wood ash, superphosphate (40 g) and potassium chloride (20 g) are added. When planting, the root collar is left 6-7 cm above the ground. Otherwise, the sequence of work is standard, as for other cherry trees.
Water after disembarkation with 3 buckets of settled water, mulch with humus. After planting, watering is carried out weekly, 1 bucket each, in case of severe drought, increase to 2 buckets. At the end of the year, the seedlings are cut, leaving 5-7 strong shoots. For the winter, young trees are sheltered from frost.
Growing and care
The Pamyati Vavilov variety is distinguished by its unpretentiousness and the ability to adapt to any conditions. An adult tree is recommended to be watered at least 3 times throughout the season. The first time is watered after the end of flowering, the second time - while the berries are being poured. The last irrigation will be water-charging, it is carried out at the beginning of October. In the hot summer, they are watered no more than once a week, since the cherry does not tolerate waterlogging of the soil. They take the settled water, pour it not under the root, but into a groove along the diameter of the trunk circle. The soil is loosened, weeds are removed and straw is laid.
It is not worth feeding young trees if fertilizers were applied during planting. The first time fertilization is applied 3 years after planting. In early spring, they are fed with organic mixtures containing nitrogen, and in the fall, when digging, dry potash and phosphorus compositions are added (no more than 50 g per plant).
The variety is recommended to be pruned annually in spring, at the end of March, in cooler areas - in April. Formative pruning is recommended for the culture: you can arrange the crown in the form of a ball or pyramid. In addition, it is imperative to carry out thinning and sanitary pruning.
Disease and pest resistance
The culture has a high immunity to coccomycosis. She has an average resistance to moniliosis, therefore, for prevention, the branches are treated with copper sulfate or Bordeaux liquid at the end of March. When the first signs of a fungal disease appear, the shoots begin to dry out, and it is recommended to cut them off with a part of healthy tissues by 10 cm. The cut is burned with potassium permanganate, and then treated several times with a fungicide.
The culture is almost not attacked by rodents and other pests because of the specific bitter bark.
Requirements for soil and climatic conditions
The variety has good winter hardiness, the cherry tree easily tolerates temperatures down to -25 degrees. Plants are whitened for the winter, the root area is mulched with humus and hay, the trunk is insulated with spruce branches.Young trees are completely covered with agrofibre for the winter. Cherry in Memory of Vavilov has high heat resistance, tolerates weather changes and temperature changes, and can grow in a small shade. Soils are suitable loamy and sandy loam, neutral in acidity.
