Cherry Novella was specially bred for those who are tired of cherry fungal diseases. The variety has excellent health.
Breeding history
Cherry Novella was included in the State Register of Varieties in 2001. The parents of the variety are Rossoshanskaya cherry and Vozrozhdenie No. 1. Rebirth is a cultivar that carries resistance to coccomycosis. Rossoshanskaya is a famous cherry, bred at the Voronezh Experimental Station, specializing in marketable, beautiful and tasty varieties. Rossoshanskaya - cherry is beautiful and tasty, but in cold and rainy summers it is quite strongly affected by moniliosis. It was decided to eliminate this deficiency.
Description of the variety
Cherry Novella is a tree of average height, up to 3 m. The crown is beautiful, wide, with branches raised up. Shoots are straight, with smooth bark, covered with dark green leaves without shine. The flowers are white, wide open, collected in inflorescences of 4 pieces. Flowers appear on average, around May 10-18, in most regions of the middle lane - this is the period when the risk of return frosts is no longer there.
Fruit characteristics
Berries are medium in size, 4.5-5 g each, round-flattened, 17-18 mm in diameter. The color of the skin is rich, burgundy black, appetizing, the pulp is deeply dark red. The juice from the berries has a rich cherry color. The pulp is firm, juicy, not tough, but not crushing either. The bone weighing 0.15 grams is perfectly separated from the pulp, which is especially convenient in cooking. The berries tolerate long-distance transportation and are very attractive. Evaluation of commercial qualities - 4.2 points, which is a fairly high indicator. Cherries with this rating have aligned, calibrated berries, beautiful shape and color.
Taste qualities
The taste is bright, with almost the same ratio of acidity and sweetness, but the acidity is slightly dominant, the tasting score is 4.2 points. The purpose of the berries is universal. Novella cherries are consumed fresh, they are added to baked goods, first and second courses, desserts, preserves, compotes, and jams are prepared. Tart cherries with sufficient acidity and medium consistency are very good for juices and wine. And also the berries are frozen and dried.
Ripening and fruiting
The berries ripen in medium terms - by the middle or third decade of July. The fruits do not stick to the stalk, are pleasant to tear off, they are comfortable to pick. The early maturity is also average - the cherry will begin to produce yields in the 4th year after planting.
Yield
The yield is high, average - 77.6, maximum - 99.8 c / ha. Up to 15 kg are removed from 1 tree, which is about 2-2.5 buckets. The yield is friendly.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
The variety is partially self-fertile; to obtain high yields, you need to plant other varieties nearby. The best choice would be the famous Vladimirskaya cherry, the modern Shokoladnitsa variety, as well as the old Spanish variety Griot Ostheimsky.
Landing
Cherry Novella in planting is not much different from other varieties. She is undemanding to the composition of the soil, loves light, spacious, but windless places, a sufficient amount of moisture. The optimum soil is loam, the acidity is neutral, and the drainage is very good.
Particular attention is paid to soil preparation - this is half the battle. It should be fertile, loose, neutral. To make too dense soil more airy, sand is added to it, if necessary, also fine gravel (up to 10 mm). It is better to take river sand - it is larger and does not make the soil viscous and solidified, like concrete. The sand is brought in by eye, focusing on their own feelings. If you can immerse your hand in the soil up to the wrist without problems, the earth is quite loose.
It is also worth taking care of choosing a place where moisture does not accumulate in spring. The Novella cherry perceives the damping and stagnation of melting snow very sensitively. You can often hear the recommendation to plant cherry trees near fences. This is really convenient, the hedge protects the plants from the wind. However, the place should still be spacious and well ventilated.
Too acidic soils are limy. Crushed chalk, slaked lime, dolomite flour or ash are added to the soil. The latter is also a source of potassium, which is very useful for cherries, and also disinfects the soil, destroying harmful microorganisms.
Young plants of Novella are planted in the fall, or if there was no such opportunity - in the spring.
They are planted in pits up to 60 cm in diameter, 45 cm deep, these figures can vary slightly depending on the size of the seedling. A nutrient mixture is poured at the bottom of the pit: half a bucket of humus and half a glass of ash + 1 tsp. superphosphate, half a glass of crushed eggshell. They loosen everything thoroughly, sprinkle it with soil and let the pit stand for 2 weeks. If there are doubts about the good moisture permeability of the soil, a drainage layer is also poured onto the bottom of the pit. After that, Novella is planted so that the root collar of the plant is flush with the soil.
Young seedlings often need support, they drive in a peg. To facilitate watering, an earthen roller is formed around the tree, its distance from the tree trunk is 30-35 cm. Immediately after planting Novella, well-compacted soil is thoroughly watered.
Growing and care
The Novella variety is resistant to fruit cracking, although it is still not worth overusing the tree's tolerance for irregular watering. During the season, the plant will need 3-4 watering, the number and terms are shifted depending on the weather. In autumn, a very plentiful water-charging watering is required - at least 6 buckets per tree. Such plants have time to better prepare for winter.
The variety has excellent health. This is noted even by those gardeners who have imperfect conditions for cherries. The plant is not affected by moniliosis, coccomycosis, fungal diseases. Enough preventive treatments with "Fitosporin" and biostimulants ("Epin", "Zircon"), as well as standard garden care: inspection and removal of all damaged parts of the plant, harvesting leaves in the fall, mulching the soil only with clean materials.
You can use industrial sprayers, but the folk method is also good: crushed eggshells or chalk are poured into the trunk circles, loosened.
The bark and wood of cherries are very tasty for rodents, therefore, before wintering, all trunks are whitened, and young trees are also wrapped in any breathable material: spruce branches, burlap, corn stalks.
With good care, Novella cherry grows and bears fruit longer than other varieties; the cherry orchard will not have to be renewed after 10 years.
Requirements for soil and climatic conditions
Winter hardiness of the tree is high, but flower buds can be slightly damaged by recurrent frosts.
Review overview
There are very few reviews. The variety did not have time to show itself. His health is highly regarded. But the berries can become smaller, ripen unevenly and for a long time, have a sour taste, in the first years of fruiting or in an unsuccessful summer. The variety is really inferior to the rating varieties in taste, for example, Kharitonovskaya has a tasting rating of 4.7-4.8 points, Zhukovskaya has 5 points. But both varieties are quite strongly affected by moniliosis and coccomycosis. The Novella variety is worth considering if you need a prolific, high-quality, persistent, "long-playing" cherry that needs a minimum of treatments for diseases.
