Among the typically sour cherry berries, there are varieties with large, juicy fruits with a mild acidity. This is the taste of Chernokorka cherry, which has been successfully cultivated by Ukrainian and Russian gardeners since 1974.
Breeding history
Chernokorka variety is an experimental product of professional breeders living in Ukraine. They managed to get a fairly fruitful cherry tree. Since the cherry was allowed for use and to this day, it has been grown in various Ukrainian and Russian regions, especially in the North Caucasus region.
Description of the variety
The Chernokorka tree grows up to 2.5 meters in height and looks like a large shrub. It has a flat-round crown covered with light green oval leaves. During flowering, the cherry is covered with white flowers. One inflorescence has 2 to 5 flowers.
Fruit characteristics
Under the maroon, almost black skin of the cherry, there is a juicy burgundy-colored flesh. There is a small bone inside. It separates well from the pulp. The cherry itself is flat-round, large in size, weighing 4.0-4.5 g.
Taste qualities
The taste of fresh fruit is estimated by professionals at 4.5 points out of 5. The dense pulp is slightly sweetish, secreting juice of a deep red color.
Ripening and fruiting
The early-growing variety bears fruit for 3-4 years from planting. Flowering culture begins from late April - early May. The fruiting period begins on July 20. It is distinguished by its stretched character.
Yield
On average, about 30 kg of berries can be harvested from one cherry tree. Yields can be doubled by applying the right farming techniques in optimal growing conditions.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
Cherry Chernokorka belongs to the group of self-fertile plants, and in order for the harvest to be abundant and of high quality, it needs the neighborhood of suitable pollinating trees. Cherry varieties are best suited for this role: Lyubskaya, Nord Star, Vocation and cherry trees: Aelita, Donchanka, Big Star, Yaroslavna.
Landing
When choosing a young cherry seedling of the described variety, it is worth taking a closer look at the following features: the tree should be one meter in height, with actively developed roots and several fresh twigs. It is important to examine it to rule out any indicators of disease. On the bark and leaf plates, spots and damage should not be noticed, all parts of a healthy tree are elastic.
Having decided on a suitable seedling, it remains to choose the appropriate place on the site for planting it. For plentiful fruiting of cherries of this variety, a lot of sun and reliable protection from cold winds are needed. It is best to be protected by a reliable fence or structure.
In addition, it is important that there are no other trees within a radius of 4 meters from it, since the proximity of such a neighborhood is not suitable for a representative of the Chernokorka variety. And also the cherry seedling should not be shaded by the vine.
Ukrainian cherry also makes certain requirements to the composition of the earth. The optimal will be a loamy substrate and a distant occurrence of groundwater. The reaction of the soil needs to be neutral, within 6.5-7.0 pH, but in any case, you will have to fertilize the soil and periodically lime it.
The described plant is planted in the soil as soon as it warms up sufficiently under the sun. Preparatory work is done in advance. In particular, the preparation of the planting pit begins a month before the supposed planting of the seedling.
Its size is determined by the volume of the rhizome. To make the seedling easier to take root in a new place, organic fertilizers are placed at the bottom of the pit, mixed with superphosphate and potassium chloride in equal proportions.
Growing and care
Like all other cherry trees, Chernokorka needs timely watering, high-quality loosening, periodic pruning and the whole range of agricultural techniques that stimulate the harmonious development of the plant.
At the first time of growth in a new place, watering the seedling is supposed to be done often and regularly. A few months later, when the tree gets stronger, a bucket of water 1-4 times a month will be enough. Closer to autumn, the number of watering needs to be reduced, and since September they are completely useless. Chernokorka gratefully responds to proper care of the trunk circle. In this zone, it is necessary to periodically remove all weeds and perform surface digging of the soil.
Every year, before flowering, the plant needs to be fed with mineral complexes in the form of a liquid solution of urea, potassium chloride and superphosphate. In addition, almost any substrate must be additionally limed by adding ground limestone to it. You can replace it with dolomite flour, and calculate the proportion of the substance according to the type of soil on the site.
After cherry blossoms, it is shown to use organic matter as a fertilizer: natural ingredients or chemical compounds that are available in any horticultural and agricultural stores.
Usually fertilized during digging or watering the soil with solutions in the near-trunk area. In the autumn (after harvesting berries), it is recommended to use any industrial complexes without nitrogen in the composition for feeding. But they must contain potassium and phosphorus.
Pruning for cherries of this variety is supposed to be regular. It is no different from the manipulations that are performed with cherry trees of other varieties.
Disease and pest resistance
Many gardeners are depressed by the fact that the Chernokorka cherry variety does not have sufficient immunity to the effects of pests from the order of insects. And she also suffers from damage by pathogens.Often the plant undergoes the development of coccomycosis.
An effective method of confronting an insidious ailment is the timely collection of fallen leaves with its immediate total destruction. Then the cherry tree is supposed to be sprayed with an antifungal fungicidal agent. This is done at the end of the flowering period and after the fruits have been harvested.
Requirements for soil and climatic conditions
Blackcork reacts normally to dry periods. Watering is necessary only if there is no rain for a month. The same can be said about the winter hardiness of cherries of this variety - it is relatively high.
Review overview
Chernokork cherry is valued for its high frost resistance, characteristic of all cherry varieties. But in winters with little snow, there is a high probability of damage to the shoots.
In this regard, at the end of autumn, it is advisable to carefully protect the roots by mulching the soil in the zone of the trunk circle with horse humus or sawdust. The stem is usually wrapped with some kind of protective material. When snow falls in winter, it serves as an additional natural layer to shelter the culture.
Cherry fruits of this variety are most often consumed fresh, often used as components for the preservation of various compotes, jams, as well as for the preparation of wine and liqueurs.
