Cherry variety Bystrinka is a little-known adapted species with increased characteristics of frost resistance and productivity. Many gardeners really like the taste of these particular berries. They can be eaten fresh, prepared compotes, juices, wine, dried and frozen. The variety is suitable for private and industrial cultivation.
Breeding history
The variety was created at the All-Russian Research Institute of Breeding of Fruit Crops by breeders A.F. Kolesnikova, GB Zhdanova, M.V. Included in the State Register in 2004.
Description of the variety
A medium-sized bush grows up to 2-2.5 m, spherical, not very dense. The branches are straight brownish-brown, the leaves are medium-sized, oval with a serrate-crenate edge, pointed at the ends, matte emerald green. Flowers with a diameter of 2 cm, white with five petals and orange stamens, collected in inflorescences of 3-5 pcs. Flowering lasts from 15 to 18 May. The shrub grows very quickly and tends to grow in width.
Fruit characteristics
The berries are medium-sized, weigh an average of 3.6 g, round, dark red. The pulp is of medium density, juicy. The skin is firm, not prone to cracking. The stone is small, well separated. They have an excellent presentation and are well transported. Stored at room temperature for about 10 days, in the refrigerator for up to 1 month, provided that they were not very overripe. It is better to remove the berries when they have darkened, but have remained quite dense. Soft cherries lie poorly and begin to ferment.
Taste qualities
The taste is sweet, delicate, with a slight sourness, sugar content - 9.9%, acid - 1.3%. Tasting score 4.3 points.
Ripening and fruiting
The bush begins to bear fruit 4 years after planting. A kind of mid-ripening period: from about 8 to 15 July.
Yield
About 20 kg of berries are harvested from one tree.
Growing regions
The culture is recommended for planting in non-chernozem and chernozem regions of central Russia.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
The variety is partially self-fertile: when planting a number of cherry trees of the same flowering period, the yield increases. Recommended as pollinators of cherries: Turgenevskaya, Kharitonovskaya, Morozovka, Zhukovskaya, Vladimirskaya, Mayak, Novella, Anthracite.
Landing
For the plant, a sunny area is selected on an elevation, protected from the wind, on the south side. Can be planted near the wall of a house or a blank fence. Conifers should not grow nearby - they can cause cherry diseases. The shrub does not tolerate the location of groundwater closer than 2.5 m. The earth is pre-dug up, and humus is added 20 kg per 1 square meter. m.Acidic soils must be shed with lime. Sand is added to clay soils. The planting hole is made in size: 60x90 cm. An interval of 2.5 meters is left between the seedlings.
A layer of drainage from gravel or wood is poured at the bottom of the pit, 10 cm soil is poured on top and left until spring. Planting is carried out at the end of March. Saplings choose one-year or two-year ones: they have good survival rate and begin to bear fruit sooner. A wooden stake is installed in the middle of the pit, a hill of fertile soil with a height of 50-60 cm is poured onto the bottom, you can add to the soil: 1 liter of ash, 5 kg of compost and 30 g of superphosphate. The roots of the seedling are carefully distributed over the embankment, the root collar is left 3-4 cm above the ground, then covered with earth, depressions are formed for irrigation and 20 liters of water are poured. The soil is mulched. In the southern regions, they are planted in the fall.
Before rooting, the seedlings are moistened every week, and during a drought, 2 times every 7 days. 10-12 liters of water are poured under one tree. For the winter, young trees are whitewashed, the fallen leaves are removed, the soil is dug around, a thick layer of mulch is poured. The crown and trunk are wrapped with agromaterial.
Growing and care
This variety is unpretentious to care for. An adult tree does not need frequent watering; in case of drought, it is recommended to water it as it dries: about 20-30 liters per plant is needed. Watering is not recommended during the ripening period so as not to spoil the taste of the berries.
Top dressing is carried out throughout the season: before the buds open, they are fed with a solution of urea, during the formation of buds with carbide - 30 g per 1 bucket of water. During flowering, it is treated with a solution of boric acid. In summer, you can feed with superphosphate and potassium chloride. In October, rotted manure is introduced into the root area - 3 kg.
The culture needs regular pruning, otherwise the bush will become very thickened. Pruning is done in early spring. In the first year after planting, in an annual plant, all branches are pruned to the branching area. In a two-year-old shrub, 9-10 skeletal branches should be left, shortened by one third. Shoots around the roots are removed in summer. Sanitary pruning is carried out in the fall after the end of leaf fall. All trimming points are sealed with garden pitch.
Disease and pest resistance
Bystrinka has good immunity to coccomycosis. The variety is prone to being amazed by moniliosis, curliness, perforated spotting, anthracnose. Diseases are mainly affected by weakened plants. Proper care and regular preventive treatments increase the resistance of the crop. For protection and at the first signs of the diseases listed above, it is recommended to spray it with a solution of copper sulfate in the spring before bud break, and process it with a Bordeaux mixture during flowering.
Insects can attack: aphid, sawfly, garden moth, cherry fly. Treatment with drugs helps from them: "Aktofit", "Bioreid". From folk remedies, infusions of wormwood and dandelion are effective.
Requirements for soil and climatic conditions
Cherry differs in average winter hardiness: it can withstand temperatures down to -35 degrees. Flower buds tolerate frosts up to –40 and higher. In adult trees in climates with harsh winters, it is recommended to mulch the root area, insulate the trunk and main branches. The plant is considered drought-resistant, an adult bush is enough to water several times per season.
The tree grows well in sandy, loamy, sandy loamy soils with neutral acidity.
Review overview
In some garden plots, the Bystrinka variety has been growing for many years and bears fruit on a regular basis. According to gardeners: cherries are very tasty, they are used to make compotes and jams. Among the advantages are the compact size of the bush and resistance to adverse weather conditions.
