Cherries are a fairly common horticultural crop. Many summer residents grow these fruit trees on their land plots. Despite the fact that this representative of the flora is considered unpretentious in care, it still requires timely feeding. Today we will talk about how to properly feed cherries, what formulas are best used for this.

The need for feeding

Fertilization is a prerequisite for the normal development and growth of trees. Spring feeding is especially important. It will allow you to actively build up green mass. In addition, the nutrients will enable these plants to easily and quickly recuperate after winter.

Also, various nutritional compositions will have a positive effect on the level of the crop, the correct laying of the buds in the next year. Often they can significantly increase the level of cherry resistance to a variety of diseases and pests.

Currently, there are a large number of different types of cherry dressings. In this case, the method of root application is most often used.

  • Spreading dry composition. In specialized stores, customers will be able to purchase ready-made mineral substances in the form of granules of various sizes. After scattering, they will begin to interact with moisture. In the course of their dissolution, the particles will penetrate deep into the soil and saturate the root system of vegetation with the necessary nutrients.
  • Abundant watering. In this case, you will first need to prepare an aqueous solution. Such fertilizers will provide quick access of important nutrients to the root systems of trees.
  • Unfolding mulch. This method allows you to saturate the soil with useful elements. It also makes it possible to prevent too much moisture evaporation.

Sometimes the foliar method is still used to fertilize this fruit crop. In this case, the vegetation is simply sprayed (branches and leaf plates).

But these procedures must be combined with preventive procedures to prevent diseases and the appearance of pests.

Stages

Cherries should be fertilized throughout their entire growth and development period. Let's consider the feeding scheme in more detail.

In early spring

At this stage, the best option would be to use a composition that contains nitrogen. If you water a young culture with a nitrogen-containing substance, then young branches and flowers will go into growth. For old trees, this treatment will enhance fruiting, as well as improve the taste characteristics of ripe fruits. In this case, urea can be used.

When preparing the composition, 30 grams of urea and 10 liters of water are mixed. In this form, the finished mixture is poured into the holes under the vegetation. For an old fruit tree, you need to prepare 2-3 full buckets. To significantly accelerate the growth of young plants, nutrient solutions with urea can be used in the month of May for three years after planting in open soil.

You can also make a solution from 1 kilogram of yeast and 10 liters of water. Such a composition will contain a large amount of useful microelements necessary for cherries. You can mix the resulting top dressing with nutritious herbal infusions.

In any case, you will first need to prepare the trunk circle for processing. To do this, it is carefully loosened, then a trench is formed around the entire circle. It is into it that the nutritious ready-made composition is poured.

Often, a solution with ammonium nitrate is also used for cherries. To prepare it, you need to mix 25 grams of this substance in dry form and 10 liters of water. The resulting mixture is stirred until the granules are completely dissolved.

Before the appearance of the first young leaves, Bordeaux liquid, copper sulfate is sometimes also used. Moreover, processing should be carried out only in dry and calm weather. The procedure is carried out by spraying. These formulations will protect the crop from pests and diseases.

During flowering

A variety of organic feed should be used at this stage. You can make an infusion with chicken droppings. To do this, mix 500 grams of this litter with 10 liters of clean water. In this form, the mixture is infused for ten days. In this case, the container with the contents must be open.

When using chicken manure, its concentration should be controlled, because an excessive amount of such a substance can lead to severe damage to the cherry root system. Most often, such processing of bushes is performed in the month of April.

Immediately before starting treatment, take 1 liter of the finished infusion per bucket of water. With this composition, abundant watering of the vegetation is performed.

Also, an infusion with young grass can be excellent for this fruit crop. In this case, it is necessary to fill the bucket 2/3 with herbs (it is better to prepare nettles, chamomile, wormwood and other weeds). They are filled with water and left to ferment for two weeks. Before watering, you will need to dilute the solution with water in a ratio of 1: 10.

It is best to mix organic liquid formulations with minerals. Sometimes they are brought in separately at intervals of 2-3 days.

Remember that organic substances cannot be used in their pure form, because they contain a large amount of acid, which can cause burns on plants.

You can separately use the infusion with nettle (solution in a ratio of 1: 20). They are sprayed with the entire terrestrial part of the vegetation. This composition allows you to scare off harmful organisms, prevent the emergence and development of various diseases.

Fertilizers with potato peelings are helpful. They can be prepared in a variety of ways. Sometimes the peel is simply placed near tree trunks. You can make a homogeneous gruel from the cleanings; infusions are often prepared. This product is rich in all the main macronutrients and micronutrients necessary for fruit crops.

After flowering

At this stage, it is best to use manure, compost. You can also use various complex organic formulations from specialty stores. It is important to add fertilizers saturated with potassium and phosphorus. To do this, you can take superphosphate, potash fertilizers.

Nutrients during this period will contribute to the active growth of the ovary. Post-flowering treatments are often carried out in the form of spraying on the leaf. You can use solutions prepared with wood ash. In this case, 100 grams of such ash is poured with 1 liter of boiling water. In this form, the mixture is infused for a day. After that, the finished infusion is diluted in another 9 liters of clean water.

In any case, it is worth considering the type of soil on which the cherry grows. So, if it is planted on land with a high level of acidity, then you should take a little lime.

This feeding is recommended to be carried out once every five years. There should be about 500 grams of lime per 1 square meter of territory.

Helpful hints

Remember that to maximize the yield of your cherries, you will need to combine various nutritional supplements with regular watering. Also, do not forget that various useful compounds should be used not only to increase yields and active plant growth, but also to prevent diseases. For these purposes, Bordeaux liquid is often used, which effectively fights fungal infections.

The use of fertilizers in the form of green manure will be effective. They should be planted in a trunk circle near fruit trees. The most common uses for this are oats, peas and vetch.

It is strictly forbidden to apply an excessive amount of fertilizer. This can lead to the development of chlorosis on the vegetation. Also, leaf blades and ovaries may fall off.

You should be careful with nitrogen-containing fertilizers. It is permissible to make them until May. Their later application can negatively affect the yield of trees.

If you plan to apply organic fertilizers by mulching, then you should do this only after the soil has completely thawed. Otherwise, the procedure will be completely useless. In this case, the layer of mulch should be about 15 centimeters. It should not be placed too close to the trunk of cherry trees. Otherwise, this can lead to the fact that the bark begins to undermine, which can lead to fungal diseases.

Root fertilizers should be applied only on slightly damp soil. This will prevent burns on the trees. When applying foliar dressing, the concentration of the solution must be reduced by half in comparison with the root formulations. In this case, it is recommended to pre-spray a small branch on a fruit tree and wait a couple of hours. If no negative manifestations are observed, then full processing can be performed.

Remember that if the cherry begins to shed ovaries and leaves, then this will indicate a lack of potassium. In this case, it is better to add an extraordinary potassium-phosphorus feeding.

The frequency of top dressing will largely depend on the age of the fruit crop. So, for cherry trees over eight years old, an increased amount of different fertilizers should be used. The volume is made about three times more.

For a plant to be able to fully grow and develop, bear fruit, it is necessary to apply both organic and mineral fertilizers. The maximum effect can be provided by complex formulations, which are sold ready-made in garden stores.
