Many gardeners are often faced with such a problem as cherry gum flow. This problem is one of the symptoms of a fungal disease that can be caused by a variety of reasons. In this article, we will tell you why gum removal could appear, and what methods can be used to deal with it.

Reasons for the appearance

One of the most common causes of gummosis or gum leakage in cherry trees is damage to the bark or deeper layers of wood. There are many reasons for tree damage. Among them, the most common ones can be distinguished: these are harmful insects, which are the main carriers of infections, various diseases such as clasterosporia and moniliosis, calcium deficiency, an abundance of crops that were not harvested on time and caused too much bending of branches, lack of whitewashing before winter, and also wrong cropping.

The gum on the cherry tree can also form due to a number of other unfavorable factors - they can be the next reason for the appearance of solidified resin. These include sunburns caused by a tree, sudden temperature changes, high humidity, freezing, excessive amounts of fertilizers, in particular, with a high content of nitrogen, potassium or magnesium, plant growth in too heavy and clayey soil. The appearance of gum should not be ignored, because harmful insects and pathogens of various diseases can penetrate through it into the depths of the tree, which, in turn, will entail a deterioration in the condition of the plant, and then its death.

It is recommended to deal with gum flow in the early stages in order to prevent the worsening of the situation.

How to treat?

Before starting the treatment of a cherry tree from gum flow, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the trunk of the plant from resin - in cherry trees, it is usually thick, while dark red or even black. This must be done with a sharpened knife, while acting carefully so as not to hurt healthy bark tissue. It is important to note that it is necessary to clean not only the area that is covered with resin, but also a couple of millimeters next to it. As a result, you should see a cream-colored wood with a greenish edging. Only after cleaning the tree from gum can we talk about ways to deal with the problem. There are many such methods, including both traditional methods and special means.

Among such funds, copper sulfate stands out especially. It is necessary to treat the cleaned areas with a 1% solution of this drug. This can be done with a sponge well moistened with the solution. After carrying out this procedure, it is recommended not to touch the tree for two days. After this time has elapsed, all places that have been treated with copper sulfate must be smeared with garden varnish. It is worth considering that if you were cleaning a large area of the bark, then in this case the tree will need to apply a special bandage from a garden bandage, otherwise there is a risk of causing even more damage to the plant and aggravating the situation. Nigrofol putty and "Kuzbasslak" are especially recommended for use for these purposes.

It is also important to note the fact that the fight against gum flow is usually carried out in a warm time period. But at low temperatures, it is recommended to postpone treatment for later.

Otherwise, the treated area, with a high probability, simply will not have time to dry out and overgrow. This will do the tree more harm than good, as it will begin to freeze. It is worth mentioning the folk methods of combating gum disease, because they are not much inferior. In addition, they are also quite economical. So, to get rid of gum disease, you can use sorrel leaves. With their help, you need to wipe the places that have been damaged. This should be done several times with an interval of 10-15 minutes. If this popular method of struggle seems ineffective to you, you can use another. So, you can personally prepare a garden pitch that will help disinfect the damaged area. To prepare such a product, you will need 25 grams of fresh bacon, 100 grams of rosin and 25 grams of beeswax.

Everything is prepared very simply: lard needs to be melted in a separate container, after which all other components should be added to it. All this must be thoroughly mixed and boiled for about 20 minutes. After that, the mixture must be removed from the stove and cooled. The cooking does not end there: the resulting product must be thoroughly kneaded with your hands, carefully making sure that there are no lumps left in it. Only after that, the resulting garden pitch can be used; it must be applied to the damaged area with a dense layer. If you still have this mixture after treatment, it is recommended to wrap it in parchment paper. This will keep it dry and can be used next time.

Prevention measures

Preventive measures help prevent problems with trees in the garden, or identify them early. First of all, it is necessary to regularly examine the tree for the presence of symptoms of the disease. This will allow in case of something to take action quickly, without allowing the aggravation of the situation. It is necessary to pay attention to the choice of planting material. It must not be damaged. Here, we note that it is best to give preference to those varieties of cherry trees that are frost-resistant and can grow without problems specifically in your region with all the features of its climate.

The planting site of the cherry tree also needs to be given a lot of attention. So, preference should be given to the area that is not prone to flooding and has no problems with the passage of moisture. Great attention should be paid to caring for the tree. So, do not overdo it with fertilizers. They, of course, are necessary for a tree for good growth and, as a result, active fruiting, but a lot does not mean good, observe the measure. Here it is worth mentioning about watering the tree: one should not allow a deficit of moisture, but its excess will also be harmful. Do not forget about whitewashing the trunks of cherry trees, which is advisable in the spring - it is she who will protect your plant from sunburn.

Do not forget about pruning wood. It must be carried out in a timely manner and at the same time carefully in order to prevent damage to the plant bark. It is necessary to speak about the bark separately. The old bark can neither be removed nor damaged. It is she who protects those layers that are located deeper, allows them not to freeze at low temperatures. However, do not rely on the old bark layer alone.

At low temperatures, trees are recommended to provide additional protection: for example, standard species and branches can be insulated with burlap.
