The Zolotoy Potapenko grape is a relatively young frost-resistant variety, bred by the famous breeder A.I. Potapenko when crossing wild and cultivated Amur species. For the first time it became known about him in 2009-2010. The variety was immediately appreciated by experts due to its high frost resistance and the ability to bear fruit perfectly even in the harsh conditions of the northern regions. Today the variety is not widespread, but is gradually gaining popularity.
Breeding history
A young versatile white grape variety was developed and began to spread in 2009-2010. The famous breeder A.P. Potapenko, trying to create a hybrid unique for the Far East region, crossed the cultivar Amur breakthrough and wild grapes.
The experiment turned out to be extremely successful. Zolotoy Potapenko combined resistance to severe weather conditions and pests of wild lianas and larger berries, increased sugar content of the cultivar.
Description
Ripening period
The ripening time for Zolotoy Potapenko is only 100 days. This variety belongs to medium-ripening hybrids. The first berry test can be done by mid-August, and harvest at the end of the month. The exact dates of ripening directly depend on the region of cultivation, but even in the coldest regions at the beginning of September, Golden is already fully ripe.
Bunches
The bunches are medium in size, the standard weight is 500 grams. With professional care, it is possible to increase the total weight up to 1000 grams. The shape of the hand is conical, the structure is medium dense. In case of improper pollination, loosening of the structure and loss of the correct shape of the bunch of grapes is possible.
Berries
The grapes weigh from 2.5 to 4 grams and are medium in size. The shape of the berries, depending on the position in the bunch and external conditions, varies from papillary to oval. Each grape has from 2 to 4 seeds, while the pulp next to them has a special slightly slimy structure. When ripe, the color changes from pale green to light golden with inclusions of other colors.
Taste
Has a pleasant sweet and sour taste. Differs in high sugar content, unusual for northern varieties - up to 240 g / dm³, with an acidity index of 6.5 g / dm3. Due to its deep taste, it is suitable as a table and is often used for making wine, juices and other drinks.
Yield
The Zolotoy Potapenko variety is especially appreciated for its high yield. With proper care, it reaches 15 kg per bush, although the vines are medium-sized.
Growing features
The variety was bred specifically for growing in difficult climatic conditions. It is most popular in the Far Eastern Federal District and the Central Region of Russia. Due to the fact that the vine easily tolerates severe frosts and temperature changes, it can be successfully grown in areas with a continental climate and a short warm period.
The variety is frost-resistant, however, in the first years after planting, it requires special care before the onset of winter.
Landing
A heat-loving plant is planted on the sunny side of the house or on an area without darkening. In order for the grapes to develop fully, cuttings are usually planted in several rows, observing a distance of 1.5 meters between plants and 2 meters between rows.
Pollination
Pollination is done by wind and insects. Nearby, it is desirable to plant varieties with the same flowering time in order for pollination to occur more efficiently.
If in a certain year, due to weather conditions, pollination is weak, it is necessary to artificially help the grapes.
Pruning
Due to the peculiarities of the climate of the regions in which Zolotoy Potapenko grows, he does not need pruning as much as more thermophilic varieties. However, it takes place in two stages. In the fall before digging and in the spring after digging. Processing in the spring is especially important. 60-100 fruiting buds are left on the vine, removing the extra ones. During the summer, extra shoots are periodically removed - stepchildren.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
The Zolotoy Potapenko grape was bred specifically for cultivation in harsh conditions. An adult vine can withstand up to -35 degrees in winter. But it is necessary to accustom the vine gradually. In the first 1-2 years, the shoots must be covered in order to protect them from freezing.
Diseases and pests
Thanks to crossing with the wild variety, Zolotoy Potapenko has a high resistance to diseases and pests. Usually he is not afraid of oidium, mildew. But for prophylaxis in the spring, additional processing is carried out.
If the vines are sick, then it is possible to save them only by using serious remedies for treatment - fungicides. Thanks to its natural endurance, the vine will quickly recover and continue to bear fruit.
If a grape is exposed to any disease or insect, this always affects its appearance.
Storage
The fruits have sufficient endurance, so they are suitable not only for processing, but also for storage. They perfectly tolerate transportation, do not crack and do not lose their shape in the process.
