A grape variety called Strashensky is widespread among experienced gardeners who have been growing horticultural crops for more than a dozen years. This variety has gained popularity due to the many characteristics obtained from the parent varieties. Before you start growing this species, it is imperative that you familiarize yourself with the features of this variety.
Breeding history
The Straseni table grape is a hybrid variety, in the breeding of which 4 different horticultural crops were used. The result is a new variety that inherits the best characteristics of the parent grapes. The experiment was carried out by a group of scientists in the 80s of the last century. The work was carried out on the basis of the Moldavian Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking
Description
This variety is easy to identify for its vigorous size and fast growth rate. In one season, the growth of the vine reaches from 2 to 3 meters. Compared to most other horticultural grapes, this is a great speed. The foliage is large. From the inside, the leaves are covered with fine fluff. The color is deep green.
Ripening period
The growing season is 130 to 140 days. The exact number of days depends on the weather conditions and the growing region. The grape belongs to the early varieties, although some gardeners call it medium early. In most cases, the first crop is harvested from late summer to late September.
Bunches
Large bunches can be either conical or cylindrical. Density ranges from medium to loose. The average bunch weight is 585 grams, although with proper care some bunches will weigh between 1 and 1.5 kilograms. In southern latitudes and when using top dressing, the weight of one brush can be more than 2 kilograms.
Berries
Ripe berries acquire a deep blue color with a characteristic prune bloom. The skin is moderately dense, but thin. The shape is rounded. The weight of one berry varies from 6 to 12 grams. Size (in millimeters) - 28x26. Professional tasters gave the fruit of this form a score of 8 points out of 10 possible. Inside each berry there are 2-4 seeds.
Taste
The sugar content is 18 to 19%. In this case, the acid is from 7 to 8 g / l. The taste of the fruit can be described as delicate and pleasant. In ripe berries, gastronomic qualities are revealed to the maximum, new fruit notes appear. Some point to a refreshing aftertaste.
Yield
The yield indicator of the variety strongly depends on the number of stepchildren on the bush. Professional gardeners strongly advise against removing them. It is best to leave them on the plant to form lush foliage. The yield indicator is 30 kilograms of berries from one bush or 197.3 c / ha. This variety belongs to high-yielding varieties.
Growing features
The first thing to consider when growing grapes is their frost resistance. The plant can withstand frosts up to 22 degrees Celsius below zero. This is a vigorous horticultural crop that needs pruning. About 25 to 30 eyes are left on the bush. The fruiting factor is 2. And the variety is resistant to various infections and diseases.
Landing
The Strashensky variety can be planted in spring or autumn. When choosing the first option, planting is best done in April. At this time of year, the risk of frost return is minimized. When planting, the soil must be warmed up to at least 10 degrees Celsius with a plus sign. The air temperature must be at least 15 degrees above zero.
If you are going to carry out planting work in the fall, this must be done a month before the onset of the expected frost. During this time, the young plant must have time to adapt. It is imperative to think over insulation so that the grapes are not damaged. Frosts can come unexpectedly, so additional protection is a must.
Note: this variety begins to yield the next year after planting in an open area. And also it is imperative to comply with all care requirements.
Pollination
During the flowering period, the grapes are covered with self-pollinated buds. Thanks to this characteristic, the garden culture does not need additional measures for fruiting.
Pruning
As a rule, the trimming procedure is carried out for 6-8 eyes. At the same time, at least 25-30 eyes are left on each shoot. The largest bunches are located on the second level. Experienced gardeners advise not to load the plant, leaving 40 to 60 eyes on it. The exact amount depends on the climate of a particular region. The farther north the area, the fewer eyes should be left.
Watering
Irrigation is an important procedure in the cultivation of fruit crops. In the first month after planting, young bushes need to be watered as the upper layers of the earth dry. Further, the frequency of watering should be reduced as the grapes take root. Adult plants can only be watered three times during the warm season. In autumn, the bushes are irrigated only after picking the berries. If the bushes grow on sandy soil, you need to increase the frequency of watering - once a month.
Top dressing
For the harvest to be stable and tasty, it is imperative to fertilize the grapes regularly.
The feeding scheme is as follows:
in the spring, nitrogen compounds are used;
with the onset of summer, the plant needs phosphorus and potash fertilizers;
organic compounds are applied in the fall.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
The frost resistance index of this variety cannot be called high, so the plant must be covered for the winter, especially if the grapes grow in the northern strip of Russia. Before freezing, the vine is removed from the supports, laid on the ground and covered with spruce branches. And also earth or agrofibre can be used as insulation.
Diseases and pests
This grape variety is highly resistant to spider mites and phylloxera. And also resistance to mildew and various types of rot is observed. However, the plant is completely vulnerable to powdery mildew, so you need to use special means for preventive treatment.
So that the plant does not suffer from infections and diseases, it is necessary to treat the grapes with fungicides several times throughout the season (3-4 times per season). The last time the bushes are processed no later than a month before harvesting the fruits.
And you should also follow other plant care measures:
removal of diseased and damaged branches;
cleaning of weeds near the vineyard;
digging the soil in the spring.
And also the grapes need to be protected from birds and wasps that hunt for sweet berries. It is recommended to use special nets that are worn over the bunches. Some gardeners opt for scarers or baits.
If a grape is exposed to any disease or insect, this always affects its appearance.
Storage
Ripe fruits cannot be stored for a long time. However, the variety is marked as transportable, if we are not talking about long-term transportation. At the same time, experts note the high marketability of the crop.
