Wine is the oldest and most valuable drink of mankind, it is no coincidence that winegrowers have been trying for many centuries to bring out the ideal grape variety for winemaking. The famous Ukrainian breeder Pavel Yakovlevich Golodriga also worked in this direction.
Breeding history
The scientist and winegrower P. Ya. Golodriga created many varieties of grapes, including Rubin Golodrigi, whose predecessors were Rubinovy Magaracha and Magarach 6-68-27. The Ukrainian illegal armed group "Ampelos" has been working for many years to return the varieties created by the breeder to their homeland from the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, where they are successfully cultivated.
Description
Technical grade, wine grade. It is characterized by medium vigor and good maturation of the vine. On fertile chernozem soils and in regions with a mild climate, it shows a significant growth force. The late bud opening makes the grapes suitable for growing in areas where recurrent frost is common. In the southern regions, it has shown itself as a good variety that grows successfully without watering, while gaining the necessary conditions, does not wither, and gives a lot of juice.
It is used for the preparation of high-quality dessert and table wines. Wines made from Ruby Golodrigi grapes have a stable and bright ruby color. The assessment given by the tasters is 7.8-8 points out of 8 possible.
Ripening period
The technical maturity of grapes occurs by mid-September, this period may vary depending on weather conditions and climatic zone. This ripening period makes it possible to classify the variety as a medium late grape form.
Bunches
The variety forms clusters of medium size, cylindrical conical shape, sometimes with a wing, the density is medium. The brushes can resemble an ear of corn and are often quite dense. Usually the mass of one bunch is 210 g.
Berries
Black, round, medium in size, covered with pruin, with juicy pulp and firm, thin skin, contains 3-4 seeds. The grapes are the same size throughout the bunch. They do not crumble for a long time. The high content of anthocyanins in the skins leads to the fact that when infused on the pulp, anthocyanins turn into wort and give the wine a rich ruby color.
Taste
Pleasant, with a nightshade aftertaste, which is especially strong in young wine. In terms of taste, it is close to Cabernet Sauvignon. Sugar content 210-240 g / dm3, acidity - 9-11 g / dm3.
Yield
With industrial cultivation - up to 140-150 c / ha.
Growing features
The technical variety Rubin Golodrigi is grown on the simplest single-plane trellis, the length of the shoots is 1-1.3 m.Tall trellises in areas where spring frost is likely to occur close to the ground is a smart solution. The bushes are raised 1 m above ground level and 3 tiers of wire are pulled. Double wire is often used for the convenience of attaching the shoots between them. The total height of the high trellis is 1.6-1.8 m, the outgrowing shoots hang freely. As an alternative to a one-plane trellis, there is a horizontal plane or an arch.
Obligatory techniques for caring for the Golodrigi Ruby - fragments of shoots, crop rationing, pinching, are carried out throughout the season. Fragment of excess shoots is done in the spring to create non-thickened bushes with good illumination and sufficient ventilation. The harvest load is determined based on the goals of the grower - overloaded bushes, the grapes of which can only be used for juice, or strict rationing up to 1-2 kg per plant - to obtain premium wine.
Landing
Grapes are planted in autumn or early spring before bud break. A well-lit place, sheltered from cold northerly winds, is chosen. The soil for the vineyard should be loose, light and nutritious. Ruby Golodrigi is a wine variety, so soil characteristics are extremely important not only for the successful growth of grapes, but also for the taste of future wine. Fertilizing and watering technical grape varieties is not worth it once again.
The holes or trenches for planting should be of such depth that the root collar of the seedling is above the ground at a height of 10-15 cm. The trenches are filled with fertile soil with the addition of organic fertilizers. Planting is best done in cloudy weather or in the evening. A trellis or other supports are immediately built along the young plantings, to which the vines are tied. The distance between plants is maintained at least 1.5 m.
When planting in autumn, it is important to insulate the roots with a thick layer of mulching materials.
Pollination
The Rubin Golodrigi variety does not need special pollination techniques. The flower is bisexual.
Pruning
The formation of a bush can be done in the following ways:
- for non-sheltering cultivation - one- or two-armed high-standard cordon;
- for covering - fan or semi-fan, with a lower wire at a height of 60-70 cm from the ground.
Annual pruning is carried out in the fall before covering the bushes, with a non-covering method - even in winter. It is carried out in order to form an optimal load on the plant - up to 50 eyes, pruning for 2-4 eyes.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
Ruby Golodrigi grapes are able to withstand temperatures down to -26 ° C. This means that in most of the middle zone, the Urals and the North-West region, plants need shelter for the winter.
Diseases and pests
The variety has field resistance to mildew, phylloxera, gray rot, powdery mildew.
If the grapes are exposed to any disease or insect, this is always reflected in its appearance.
Storage
You can save grapes before processing by fulfilling the conditions:
- harvesting is carried out in favorable weather, the fruits must be dry;
- the bunches are cut with pruning shears; you cannot touch the berries with your hands, so as not to erase the pruin protective layer;
- remove all spoiled, unripe or dried berries from the bunch;
- in the storage room for grapes, they provide a temperature up to + 5 ° C and a humidity not higher than 80%;
- during storage of the crop, the cellar is ventilated, but only in dry weather;
- store the bunches in a suspended state on a horizontal support;
- fruits should not touch metal objects and walls of the room.
With proper attention and proper care, the Rubin Golodrigi variety is able to please the gardener with an impressive harvest and excellent quality wine.
