Pleven grapes are in demand among gardeners all over the world. It takes root well in many regions, even with a fairly low temperature regime.
This grape is grown mainly for fresh consumption and is used to make Muscat wines. It is also good for making marmalade, various types of confiture and preserves.
Breeding history
The grape gets its name from the place where it was bred. It originated from a cross between Italy and Amber in the city of Plevna, which is located in Bulgaria.
This variety has several names - in addition to the main Pleven, it is called Phenomenon and Augustine.
Geography of distribution
Despite its high resistance to frost, this variety loves to grow in warm climates. For the ripening of a good harvest, the most suitable are the southern regions, as well as areas with a mild climate, located in the middle lane.
Description
Differs in great vigor of growth. Shoots are brown with a slight green tint. The bunches of grapes are small in size, but despite this, Pleven's berries are quite large. The leaves of this plant are not dissected, five-lobed.
Ripening period
In terms of timing, this grape belongs to the early. Begins to bear fruit in August. Under good growing conditions, the crop can ripen within 100 days from the start of the growing season.
Bunches
This plant has medium-sized clusters of medium density, conical, slightly winged in shape. They do not have a tendency to pea. The berries are very secure on the hand. The weight of one bunch can reach 222 g, and with good strengthening and 307 g.
Berries
Fruits are oblong, light yellow-green in color. A slight tan appears on the sunny side of the berries. They are quite large in size, each weighing up to 5 g. The skin is thick, covered with a dense waxy coating. The pulp is juicy, fleshy, crunches when bitten.
The sugar content is 157 g / dm3, acidity is 5.4 g / dm3.
Taste
It has a harmonious taste with subtle nutmeg notes. Has a fresh sour aftertaste.
Yield
High-yielding variety. Up to 140 centners of the crop are obtained from one hectare. Each bush ripens about 60 kg of berries.
Growing features
Almost any soil is suitable for growing, preferably soil with loam or black soil. The acidity should be between 5-6 pH. Can be planted and not in open areas, calmly tolerates partial shade. Not afraid of windy weather and drafts. Pollinates and bears fruit in various conditions of detention.
He loves large watering, and especially needs abundant moisture in dry weather conditions.
Landing
There are no special conditions for planting, the usual scheme is suitable, as for most other varieties.
The seedlings are planted in holes 10-15 cm deep. The soil must be prepared in advance - loose and nourished with nutrients. For this, legumes or parsley are first grown on it. And you also need to worry about good air and moisture exchange.
For planting at the time of year, spring is best so that the grapes can take root firmly in good weather conditions. In the fall, he may not have time to take root before frost appears.
Pollination
Pleven differs from many other varieties in that it is capable of self-pollination under various climatic conditions. It has flowers of both sexes.
Pruning
This type of grape care is produced every year. It is taken into account that mainly clusters are formed on shoots a year old. When pruning, leave a load of 35-40 eyes per bush.
Watering
The variety loves abundant moisture, therefore, in the first year after planting, during the first month, it is watered every 10 days, during the second - every 14-20 days, and starting from the third month, watering is carried out every 30 days. Water consumption per bush is 10-20 liters. When it rains, watering is not carried out, waiting for the top layers of the soil to dry with a depth of 15 cm.
After each watering, the soil is loosened and mulched with a depth of 15 cm. A month before the arrival of frost, 50 liters of water should be poured under each bush.
Top dressing
Top dressing is carried out only in the second year of plant life. During the first year, there are enough nutrients in the soil for seedlings without additional groundbait.
By the spring, after cleaning the shelters, the soil is dug up and fertilized with muted manure. Fresh manure cannot be applied.
Before the flowering period of grapes, it is treated with a mineral complex, at the expense of 40 g of superphosphate and 10 g of potassium salt per 10 liters of water for watering one bush.
When the ovary appears, yeast milk is added. Sugar, yeast and water in the proportions of 2 tbsp. spoons, 1 pack per 10 liters, respectively, combine and mix until foam forms on the surface. The water temperature must be at least 35 ° C. 10 liters of solution are consumed per 1 m2.
Before wintering, the soil is fertilized with potassium phosphate 10 g and dolomite flour 40 g. Usually, watering and feeding are combined with each other.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
Not too hardy variety. It takes root in the northern regions of the country, but there it requires additional shelter for the winter. Poorly tolerates cold winters without snow. Therefore, in such a climate, he needs additional care.
In order for this variety to tolerate severe cold well, it is tilted and placed in the furrows, sprinkled with earth on all sides and covered with special material. Sometimes a shelter created from boards is laid under the material. In such conditions, the grapes tolerate wintering well and give a rich harvest.
Diseases and pests
A very disease-resistant grape variety. This is its main disadvantage. It has an average resistance to leaf phylloxera - 4 points. Only 2 points of resistance to gray rot. The immunity to other diseases is even lower.
For the prevention of diseases, the upper part of the grapes is treated with "Fundazol". The solution for use is prepared at the rate of 1 to 1 of the drug and water. Use 1.5 liters of solution per square meter. 3 treatments are required with this agent with a time interval of 10 days.
If the plant is already infected with oidium or mildew, it is necessary to prune the diseased shoots. The cut off affected parts are removed from the landing area. The soil is cultivated, and at high humidity, the top layer of soil is removed and a new one is poured, mixed with sand and peat.
To scare away birds and keep the berries on the bunch, put on small cloth bags. And the bushes themselves are fenced off with cells.
If a grape is exposed to any disease or insect, this always affects its appearance.
Storage
According to its properties, the variety is suitable for long-term storage. It has high rates of transportability and keeping quality, which makes it an excellent variety for growing in industrial conditions for sale.
