Recently, frost-resistant grape varieties are gaining popularity. This is not surprising, since the weather has changed a lot in recent years, even in the southern regions.
The original is just one of those varieties. With proper preparation of the gardener, you can get tasty, attractive fruits from the bush.
Breeding history
The breeding of the variety was carried out by Ukrainian scientists at the I.V. V.E. Tairova. It was possible to get the variety by crossing two other types of grapes: Datie de Saint-Valier and Damascus rose.
From the first variety, the Original received such positive qualities as resistance to frost and most diseases, from the second - an amazing taste and shape of the grapes.
Geography of distribution
Most of all, the variety is widespread throughout the territory of our country and Ukraine. In Russia, it was entered into Rosreestr in 2009.
Description
Table variety Original has bisexual flowers. These are vigorous bushes that require pruning. On one plant, the percentage of fruitful shoots is from 65 to 80%.
The Original has a fruiting coefficient of 1.2-1.7. It is not used on an industrial scale, therefore, wine is not produced from berries. But you can make a drink at home, since the fruits have a sufficient sugar content.
The variety has subspecies, they differ from each other in the color of the berries. The most acidic ones are found in white grapes.
It is necessary to harvest on time, otherwise it will lead to a deterioration in the quality of the fruit. They are saturated with moisture.
Ripening period
This is a mid-late grape, it ripens from the moment of budding in 135-145 days.
Bunches
Conical clusters form on the bushes. The density of the berries is loose or moderate. Each bunch can weigh 400-600 g.
Berries
The fruits can be either white or white-pink. There are seeds, for each grape there are from 2 to 3 of them.
The sugar content is 190-210 g / dm³, acidity is 5-6 g / dm³.
As for the peel, it is strong, fleshy and juicy flesh is hidden inside.
Each fruit has an elongated ovoid shape, a pointed tip has an interception. The weight of one is 5-6 grams.
Large grapes 30x22 mm.
Taste
The Original has a fairly simple traditional grape flavor.
Yield
The crop can be harvested at the end of August. This is a medium-yielding variety. With proper care, you can take 40-100 kilograms from one bush.
The yield drops if the fruits do not have enough sun, or there is an excess of water in the soil.
Growing features
When growing the Original, it is very important to monitor the groundwater. If they are closer than 1.5 m from the surface of the earth, then the root system of the bushes can be severely damaged.
I also fell in love with the variety for the large number of options available during reproduction. You can grow new plants both from seeds and by layering, cuttings or seedlings.
Landing
The material is planted in the spring, it is possible in the fall. If the warm season is used, then this should be done before sap flow begins. In the autumn, seedlings are planted in the ground before the first frost, the exact time depends on the planting region. As practice shows, the second option is better.
On the landing site, it is better to choose a place south of the buildings. This will protect the bushes from the wind. It is imperative that there is enough sun at the landing site during the day.
Chernozem is considered the most favorable soil, but the Original takes root on other soils with no less success. The only caveat is that when there is a lot of sand or clay in the ground, it will have to be additionally fertilized for several years after planting.
The best way to do this is to use:
compost;
humus;
modified store mix.
Pollination
Pollination is not necessary as bisexual flowers form on the plants.
Pruning
The vine is cut to 8-12 eyes. There should be 45-60 of them per bush.
Watering
As with growing any grape variety, watering is essential when a good harvest is expected. 10 liters is enough for one bush per week, but only when there is no constant rain.
Top dressing
Top dressing must be used several times per season. They bring it into specially created small grooves, which are dug out at a distance of 50 cm from the trunk. Their depth should be no more than half a meter.
For the entire growing season, fertilizers are used 3 times.
Before covering the seedling for the winter, add a mixture of 20 g of superphosphate, 10 g of ammonium nitrate and 5 g of potassium salt. All this is diluted with 10 liters of water. This proportion is calculated for one bush.
The same mixture is fed to the plant before the flowers appear.
When fruits appear, only potassium salt is removed from the mixture, the remaining components are left in the same amount.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
The level of frost resistance in the Original is –21 C. Shelter in severe frosts is required, especially if it is a young plant.
Immediately after harvesting, a hole 200 mm deep is dug around the bushes. The roots are removed, but so as not to damage the entire system. Then the pit is again covered with soil.
Diseases and pests
The variety has good resistance to fungal diseases. Very rarely grapes are affected by mildew.
The biggest misfortune of the Original is the wasps, who love him very much. If the fruits are grown for sale, it is better to hide them under a special net.
In addition to mildew, the gardener will have to face such problems as bacterial cancer, white rot, downy mildew. The first and most important reason why diseases begin to develop is a fungus.
As a preventive measure, it is worth using more mineral store formulations for feeding. All foliage under the plants is removed, the soil must be loosened, since it should be light and porous.
If it was not possible to prevent the onset of the disease, then fungicides are urgently applied. Copper sulfate has proven itself quite well. You can buy it without difficulty; a 0.5% solution is used for spraying.
Spraying is done before the buds have blossomed, in summer and after leaf fall.
If a grape is exposed to any disease or insect, this always affects its appearance.
Storage
After harvesting, the fruits can be stored until January.
Problems with transportation can arise, since the fruits easily fall off the branches.
