Over the two decades of its existence, Nizin table grapes have acquired the status of a classic hybrid form grown in different climatic zones of Russia and neighboring countries. The variety attracted farmers for its excellent taste and marketability, unpretentiousness and ability to adapt to various conditions.
Breeding history
Nizina grapes - the first variety of authorship of the amateur winegrower V.N.Krainov from Novocherkassk. To grow this hybrid, a “private” breeder crossed Kesha-1 and Radiant Kishmish, also known as Talisman and Tomaysky, respectively. A successful experiment was carried out in 1998, and since then the variety has been the leader in the ratings of popular breeding varieties.
Geography of distribution
Initially, the Lowland was cultivated in the south of Russia. Then the gardeners living in the middle lane and the agrarians from the regions located to the north drew attention to the grapes.
Description
Vine bushes grow above average, and go up quickly, and most of the shoots bear fruit. They are distinguished by strong branching. The bush grows equally well from cuttings and in a grafted culture. The variety is also recognizable by slightly drooping leaves, which is actually the norm for this hybrid.
Ripening period
Lowland harvest begins to give 2-3 years after planting, depending on climatic conditions. The period from the beginning of the growing season to full ripening of the fruits is 125-130 days. Thus, the variety should not be considered early, but rather medium late.
Bunches
With standard care, the shoot produces 2 bunches, each of which ripens at least three dozen grapes. The density of a large cluster is medium-sized. The view is beautiful and appetizing. The average weight is approximately 1000-3000 g, but cases of brushes growing up to 2-3 kg have been described. Up to 40 berries ripen on each bunch.
Berries
Fruits are oval, narrowed downwards, large in size. Inside each fruit there are up to 2-3 seeds. The color is red-lilac or with a pinkish tinge appears 2 weeks before consumer ripeness. Another feature of grapes is that on fertile soils, their color is darker than usual.
The skin is firm but not tough. The sugar content is in the range of 170-180 g / dm3. The acidity is approximately 8-9 g / dm3.
Taste
Harmonious, full flavor bouquet is felt. There is a cherry flavor.
Yield
Highly due to the peculiarities of the growth of the bush. Usually, the collection of ripe bunches of a hybrid variety takes place in September, when exactly depends on the weather conditions. From one bush Nizin gives 6 kg of juicy fruits.
Growing features
The Nizin variety does not require a special agrotechnical approach. Propagated by branches, seedlings and grafting.
Landing
The variety has strict planting requirements.Primarily determined with a place for seedlings. It should be on the sunny side, because when there is a lack of light, the bushes do not develop well and produce poor quality fruits. Landing in a windless area is considered another important requirement. The ideal option is to protect the seedlings with a building wall facing the south.
Before planting, the roots of the seedlings are treated in a solution of "Humate". A separate spacious feeding area is determined for each bush. For this, the plants are planted at a distance of 3-4 m from each other. Mulching the soil around the seedlings is mandatory. This measure prevents the soil from drying out and the appearance of weeds.
Pollination
Flowering occurs at the usual time: approximately in mid-June. The flowers of this culture are bisexual, which means that the process of pollination and fruit setting is not a problem.
Pruning
Pruning of grapes is carried out annually by the method of fan-shaped multi-arm forming. So the bush is less injured. All shoots are shortened by 6-8 eyes. A large potential crop is formed on the bush. It is necessary to normalize its quantity. If this is not done, the fruits and clusters will grow much smaller than that typical of the variety. Shoots are also subject to partial removal.
Watering
For a good yield, the grapes of the hybrid variety Nizina need a sufficient amount of moisture. It is important to pay special attention to the bushes during the dry season. To preserve moisture, the trunk circle is mulched after watering.
Abundant watering of the grapes is necessary at the beginning of the growing season and at the stage of fruit formation. Also, the variety needs moisture-charging autumn watering, which contributes to the formation of the next year's harvest and prevents the vines from freezing in winter.
Top dressing
In early spring, the culture should be fed with superphosphate at a dosage of 40 g per 1 sq. m. It is brought into the near-stem circles. In May, the variety is fertilized with nitrogen, which is necessary to increase the green mass. During the period of swelling of the buds, the plants are watered with infusion of chicken droppings at the rate of 1 liter of solution per bush. At the stage of ripening of berries, potash fertilizers are applied according to the instructions. Each root dressing must be combined with watering.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
For the winter, seedlings must be covered. In most regions, light cover is required, which can be attributed to another advantage of this variety. A powerful adult vine can withstand a drop in temperature, but in a harsh winter climate it is better to prevent it from freezing. It is enough to remove the vine from the trellises and cover it with spruce branches.
Diseases and pests
Professionals assess the resistance of the variety to fungal diseases at 3-3.5 points. With prolonged heat, the variety shows a decrease in resistance to powdery mildew. To protect the vine at the stage of fruit ripening, it must be treated with a solution of dispersed sulfur.
Phylloxera often settles in the Lowland. Spraying the bushes with insecticides up to 2 times a season will not be superfluous. Regular disease prevention will help avoid disease and pest damage. In spring and autumn, treatment with "Antracol" is effective.
The hybrid variety, for some reason, is not attractive to hornets, wasps and bees. Such cases in relation to grapes are rare, which, of course, refers to another undoubted advantage of the Lowland over many other varieties.
If a grape is exposed to any disease or insect, this always affects its appearance.
Storage
Under normal temperature conditions, the brushes can be safely stored for up to 2 weeks, with lower thermometer readings - from 0 ° C to + 7 ° C - the period increases to a 2-month period. During storage, it is important to periodically inspect the crop, ridding the bunches of rotten and spoiling berries.
In general, the brushes have an attractive presentation, they are transportable due to their tough skin. With proper storage, you can save the harvest for the New Year. In this case, the taste of the berries will even slightly improve.
In fact, the creation of the breeder Krainov can be considered a gift to all lovers of delicious grapes: a combination of ideal shape, harmonious taste with impressive size and weight of berries.
Nizin grapes are tastier when fresh. Powerful purple bunches will become a real decoration of a festive banquet. They can be used in desserts or added to salads, garnished with them, and served separately as a sweet snack. But high-quality wine from this variety will not work because of the inappropriate proportion of sugar and acidity.
