Monarch table grape is also known as Chrysolite. It is a unique hybrid of a private author's collection. The variety was highly appreciated by gardeners from different countries, primarily for the impressively large size of the fleshy berries, the juiciness of the pulp and the excellent nutmeg taste. Thanks to these characteristics, this variety is of interest to growers and summer residents.
Breeding history
Monarch grapes are the fruit of the experiments of an enthusiastic breeder Yevgeny Georgievich Pavlovsky. He developed a novelty by crossing the Talisman and Cardinal varieties, which, in turn, was mixed with the pollen of other varieties. After checking the quality of the fruits, it received its well-deserved name and popularity among gardeners, however, it was entered into the Russian state register under the name Chrysolite, since the German selection collection already contains the Black Monarch variety. But the glory of this variety was entrenched precisely under the name Monarch.
Geography of distribution
The monarch feels great in the southern regions, since he himself comes from the Krasnodar Territory.
Description
The variety, loved by many agronomists, is characterized by medium-sized bunches with very large berries. One of the most serious drawbacks of the variety is the tendency to shedding the ovaries.
Ripening period
The ripening of the table hybrid occurs in the mid-early stages. The growing season is 120-140 days. Plants are characterized by rapid growth. Due to the high sugar content, the vine can ripen quickly. In southern Russia, the sweet grape variety ripens in the first decade of August, and in the middle lane only by mid-September.
Bunches
Each bunch weighs on average about 500-600 g. The shape is conical. All fruits are the same size and ripeness.
Berries
The grapes of this variety are distinguished by an impressive size. Each individual berry can weigh an average of 20 g, which is comparable to the mass of a small plum. The berries are ovoid in shape, with a dense yellowish-green skin. At the peak of ripeness, when the sun is active, the berries acquire an amber hue with a slightly reddish "tan". The fruits can remain on the bush without spoiling or crumbling. Seeds are small, no more than 3 pieces for each berry. A distinctive feature of the variety is the delicate nutmeg aroma of the pulp.
Taste
Very pleasant, full-bodied taste due to the high sugar content and nutmeg flavor. The fleshy flesh is very juicy and tender.
Yield
Monarch grape bush gives a high yield - on average 10 kg of ripe berries.
Growing features
The success of cultivation is largely determined by proper planting and care.
Landing
The hybrid belongs to heat-loving plants. For full maturation, it needs a sufficient amount of sunlight. The variety does not tolerate northern winds. For disembarkation, sites on the south side of the buildings will be more suitable. It is not recommended to plant grapes in open areas and in clay soil. The plant prefers black soil. It can grow on sandy soil, but young seedlings take root there rather poorly.
The bush grows large, which requires a 3-4 meter distance between rows when planting. You cannot do without high trellises and coarse sand. It is covered with a top layer as a conductor of moisture. Before planting, seedlings must be hardened in the fresh air. The grown stems that have taken root are transferred to open ground, or the stock is used. The cuttings take root without problems. Young shoots of grapes tend to grow rapidly.
Pollination
The flower in Monarch grapes is bisexual, that is, independently pollinated. Agronomists note the best pollination on the shaded side of the bushes.
Pruning
They begin to prune the bushes when they are in the dormant phase. After the formation of the berries, it is important to thin out the shoots. Thinning until the bush has bloomed is a big mistake in caring for the Monarch. 4 shoots can be released from the main trunk as much as possible. On the bush, you need to leave about 30-35 eyes. The Monarch variety needs strong trellises. Lightweight plastic structures can break under the weight of a tall bush.
Watering
Watering the grapes is necessary infrequently, the plant needs more moisture only during the drought period. If the soil where the grapes are growing is dry and moisture evaporates quickly, you may need to water the crop more often. If there is no special need for this, watering the cousins is necessary only before the beginning of flowering and at the beginning of the formation of ovaries. Further, the condition of the plant and soil is monitored. Based on this, additional watering is carried out. In most cases, watering is done every 2 weeks. To keep the soil moist, mulching the soil around the vine is shown. For this, ordinary humus is suitable, which is distributed around the bushes, forming a layer thickness of no more than 3 cm.
Top dressing
Top dressing of the Monarch hybrid grapes is carried out in parallel with loosening the soil. Most often, plant fertilization coincides with watering. Organic matter is introduced into the soil in the fall. And also for the growth of grapes, special fertilizers with potassium and phosphorus are used. They are introduced into the soil in three stages: after flowering, 2 weeks before harvest and before the onset of cold weather.
As a fertilizer, preparations containing boron, copper and zinc are suitable:
ammophos;
"Kemira";
Novofert.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
This hybrid demonstrates resistance to severe frost. Therefore, there is a need to shelter grapes only in regions that are characterized by a decrease in temperature in winter below -25 ° C.
Diseases and pests
The plant has excellent immunity. Monarch is resistant to various diseases, has a good resistance of 2 points to mildew, oidium, gray rot. At the same time, it is especially susceptible to damage by powdery mildew. This disease significantly affects the quality and appearance of the crop. With prolonged damage, the vine begins to die off. To protect the plant from a destructive disease, timely prevention is important. A one percent solution of Bordeaux liquid copes with this task perfectly. It is used to treat the bushes of grapes.
Wasps rarely visit vineyards, as the fruits of the hybrid are not susceptible to cracking. Birds are more problematic. During the ripening period of berries, they peck up the largest ones.
If a grape is exposed to any disease or insect, this always affects its appearance.
Storage
The dense skin on the berries allows the vines to be transported over long distances without fear of their condition. The harvest is stored in the refrigerator, from time to time it is required to get rid of rotten berries. The bunches are well stored in the cellar, tied to twine.
Review overview
Monarch hybrid grapes are very fond of many gardeners and experienced winegrowers. With proper care of the plant, there are no serious problems, and the grape bushes delight with a full harvest.
The taste of the grapes is not affected by weather conditions and air humidity.
The owners of this variety, who know a lot about growing grapes, speak extremely positively about this table variety.
For better fruiting and productivity of a truly royal berry, horizontal growth guidance is shown on arches and arbors.
Cuttings take root well directly in the ground or are grown using a rootstock. In both cases, the variety will take root without problems for the grower.
