Cultivation of grapes in Western Siberia, the Urals or in central Russia is difficult due to climatic conditions. But many gardeners are ready to experiment with different early maturing varieties in order to get a harvest of tasty and healthy berries. Not so long ago, Russian breeders delighted winegrowers with a new early grape variety, Aladdin.
Breeding history
The Aladdin grape was bred by the breeders of the All-Russian Research Institute of Life Sciences named after V.I. Ya. I. Potapenko in Novocherkassk. In 2005, among the many new seedlings, variety II-13-4-1, or Aladdin, was recognized as one of the most promising.
The basis is two varieties of Delight grapes: red and nutmeg. By crossing them, a new table variety was obtained, characterized by high yields and good transportability.
Description
Aladdin is a medium-sized frost- and drought-resistant grape variety with dense clusters of fleshy berries of a pleasant taste with nutmeg notes.
Ripening period
The Aladdin hybrid belongs to very early varieties with a growing season of 115-120 days, which allows it to be grown in areas that are not typical for this plant.
Bunches
Dense conical clusters weigh 0.6-0.7 kg and are distinguished by good keeping quality. Ripe grapes, remaining on the bush, retain their bunch shape and taste for a month.
Berries
The spindle-shaped berries, pink with yellow, acquire a bright pink color in the light. The dense flesh is covered with a thin skin, almost imperceptible when consumed. There are no bones. The weight of an individual berry is slightly less than 9 g.
Taste
The hybrid has a harmonious taste with a slight nutmeg undertone.
Sugar content - 188 g / dm³, acidity - 7 g / dm³. Taste score obtained as a result of tasting - 8.4-8.7 points.
Yield
Aladdin is a consistently high yielding variety with a tendency to overload the vine. The yield coefficient is 1.1.
Growing features
The cultivation of Aladdin grapes has no peculiarities.
A medium-sized bush with a vine length of up to 250-300 cm is suitable for both professional breeding and for growing in private backyards.
In the first year, the bush grows up to 1 m high, giving a large number of half-meter shoots, on which up to two brushes are laid. This amount is excessive for a young plant.
Reproduction of the variety is carried out by cuttings or grafting, leaving a large amount of wood on the stock.
Landing
The hybrid prefers sunny locations with good soil.
Planting is carried out in late spring, when the water goes to a depth of more than 1.5 meters, or in early autumn before the onset of stable cold weather in warm soil. After planting, the young are covered with needles, peat or foil, depending on the season.
The landing site is sunny and sheltered from the wind.
The soil is suitable loamy or black earth.
Landing scheme 3 × 1.5 m.
Wells are prepared in advance. Dig a hole 0.8 m deep. The bottom is lined with rubble 0.1 m high and filled with a mixture of turf and compost. Having established a seedling, they are covered with the extracted earth. Water and cover thoroughly.
Pollination
The plant is bisexual, which means it is self-pollinated.
Pruning
For a good harvest, the plant needs pruning. With its help, the number of shoots and ovaries of the future harvest is regulated. It is advisable to leave no more than 30 eyes on the bush, and up to 6-8 ovaries on the vine.
Before wintering, it is necessary to remove all unripe shoots.
Watering
The hybrid is drought-resistant, but watering before flowering and after will not be superfluous.
Top dressing
Regular feeding with organic and mineral fertilizers will increase the already good yield.
Frost resistance and the need for shelter
Tests of the new variety were carried out on the territory of Novocherkassk. Aladdin showed that an adult plant tolerates frosts down to -25 degrees without additional shelter for the winter, which indicates its good winter hardiness and frost resistance.
It is imperative to cover young shoots for the winter, removing them from the trellises. Where winters are harsher, adult plants require shelter.
Diseases and pests
The new variety is resistant to mildew and oidium (2.5 and 3 points, respectively). If there is a focus of the disease nearby, then the bushes need to be sprayed with a combined fungicide three times: when the first leaves appear, before flowering and after it ends.
But gray mold can be a threat, especially during rainy times. This is due to the very dense structure of the bunch. Sunny dry weather destroys the fungus, but if it threatens to spread, the lesions are sprayed with a soapy solution of copper sulfate in a ratio of 50 g per 10 liters.
If a grape is exposed to any disease or insect, this always affects its appearance.
Storage
Aladdin's berries are distinguished by good keeping quality and transportability. The grapes are stored for a long time and without deformation of the fruit.
Review overview
Gardeners who planted Aladdin grapes on the site note its high yield, good taste and the possibility of long-term storage.
