Mixer diverter: what it is, features and device
It is even difficult to imagine how inconvenient it would be to operate the mixer without a divertor. Many, using this mechanism every day, do not even know what it is. This is a switch that allows you to change the direction of water from the shower to the faucet and vice versa in a second.
What it is?
Under the incomprehensible word "divertor" there is a simple mechanism that is built into the mixer body or installed separately from it. With this device, the direction of the flow of water from the shower to the tap or spout is changed. Such a mechanism simplifies the use of the mixer and increases the comfort of taking water procedures or using water for other purposes.
The divertor device is simple, but it provides for the presence of rubbing parts and direct contact with water. It is these circumstances that most often underlie breakdowns of mixers.
Varieties
Diverters are available in a wide range. The differences between them can be of a different nature. In such a variety, it is easy to get confused and make the wrong choice. To prevent this from happening, you need to understand the existing varieties.
A number of divertors are distinguished by type.
- Push-button mechanism is a well-known classic. Such devices are installed with a pressure of low power and the impossibility of automatic fixation of the switch. To change the direction of flow, the lever must be pulled up or down. Therefore, such a mechanism has a second name - exhaust. Manual and automatic devices are available.
- Lever, rotary or flag The divertor has a simple design. To change the direction of the water, you just need to turn the knob in the desired direction. This mechanism is often seen on faucets equipped with two handles.
- Spool diverters installed on mixers with two valves. Such mechanisms are designed very simply, which allows you to independently cope with their repair or replacement without any problems.
- Cartridge type equipped with one lever, which is responsible for regulating and changing the direction of flow. Such mechanisms are not repaired, but only replaced with new ones.
- Eccentric device or ball diverter actuated by rotating the handle, which activates the stem. This part closes / opens the necessary plugs due to the translational movements. The repair usually consists of replacing the gaskets, which is considered a plus. But if another problem arises, you will have to disassemble the entire mixer, which is troublesome and time-consuming.
- Cork type is not particularly popular, although its repair is simple, and the operation is convenient. This type differs from an eccentric device by the presence of a lever, and not a rotating handle.
The second criterion is functionality. There are also two varieties here: two-position and three-position. The first type is more common and affordable. The second type of device is equipped with an additional option, it is used mostly in the kitchen, it allows you to distribute the flow in two directions. The cost of three-position divertors is approximately one thousand rubles.
- The mechanisms also differ in terms of parameters. Diverters are available for ½ ”and ¾” threads. This criterion plays an important role, therefore, it must be taken into account during the selection.
- External characteristics are also of great importance when choosing a mechanism.The divertor is not a completely hidden device, so it participates in shaping the design of the mixer. When choosing, you need to take into account the aesthetic characteristics of the crane and its design features.
- According to the method of installation, built-in and separate models, independent mechanisms are distinguished. The first option is relevant in the bathroom, the second is used mainly in kitchens to connect a washing machine or dishwasher to the sink.
Manufacturing materials
For the production of divertors, a huge variety of materials are used. Some show high quality and durability, but are expensive. Others are more affordable, but not as high quality. Among the main varieties are:
- Brass is inexpensive and shows good durability. The coating material plays an important role. Chromium has high hygienic properties. Enamel, like ceramics, attracts with a long service life if used carefully.
- Nickel now it is rarely used, since it can cause allergic reactions. Stainless steel is a good option for baths and showers, but such a mechanism will have to be constantly looked after. Water marks are clearly visible on the shiny surface and fingerprints remain.
- Ceramic The divertor has recently appeared on the market. Not the entire mechanism is made of ceramics, but only the plates that ensure the operation of the device.
- POM Is an innovative polymer that demonstrates high durability. These switches look attractive, but they are also expensive. On average, their cost is 40% higher than the prices for classic options.
- Light alloy mechanisms have established themselves as one of the most durable. This is especially true for an alloy of brass and aluminum, to which lead is added. These switches are rarely problematic.
Lead is a toxic material. According to Russian production requirements, the permissible percentage of lead is 2.5%. In Europe, this requirement has been reduced to 1.7%. Exceeding these indicators is unacceptable. Well-known manufacturers strictly adhere to standards and put information on the composition of the product on the packaging.
Manufacturers
When choosing a divertor, it is important to study in advance the manufacturers who can be trusted with their choice.
- Kaiser company based in Germany. It offers the user a wide range of high-quality and safe products made in various styles.
- French company Jacob delafon creates a wide range of plumbing mechanisms, including divertors. The products are expensive, but durable and reliable.
- Finnish company Timo well known to the Russian user. Such mechanisms last for a long time, rarely require repair. Competently created assortment allows you to choose a switch for any plumbing.
- The IDDIS trademark was founded in Russia. Affordable and reliable products delight many users. The diverters are adapted to water that is not of high quality. Moreover, many imported mechanisms quickly fail for this very reason.
- Products from the Bulgarian brand Vidima by many consumers and specialists it is considered one of the highest quality and most durable. In Russia, it is very popular and in demand. Even the high cost does not deter buyers.
Operating tips
When choosing a divertor, you need to focus on the convenience of its future operation. Moreover, its design and operating principle should be clear. In this case, the user can remove it, disassemble, repair or replace it with a new one. Each type of switch has its own problems, some require adherence to subtleties during operation.
These points should be taken into account when choosing.
- The simplicity of spool diverters attracts users with a simple and convenient water switch between spout and shower, affordable cost and lightweight design. But the catch lies in the problems that often arise during operation. Axleboxes and crank are the main elements that can be loose. Also, the gaskets and rubber ring often require replacement. Another challenge lies in diagnosing and identifying the problem.
- The pushbutton switch fails for other reasons. This can be a worn condition of the rubber ring, a broken spring, which is the main working unit, or an oil seal that needs to be replaced.
- Cartridge devices suffer from accumulations of rust, dirt and other negative manifestations that form water in pipes. Repair in such a situation will not help; you will have to change the entire switch to a new one.
In most cases, divertors are removed according to a single scheme:
- water is blocked - it is imperative to start with this, otherwise you risk flooding your neighbors;
- the shower hose is unscrewed;
- the gander is dismantled;
- the diverter is removed by means of a union nut or directly behind the mechanism (if a switch screwed into the mixer body is installed);
- installation is carried out upside-down.
It is not recommended and even prohibited to use keys during assembly. Tighten the nuts by hand. As a last resort, you can use the keys, but you do not need to use all the force.
