Classic bathrooms: design features and design options
Bathroom design is of particular importance today. If earlier this room was of an exclusively functional nature, today there is no way without a design approach. It is important to choose the theme of the interior, otherwise the room runs the risk of being uncomfortable. Among other stylistic solutions, the classic style is very popular in the approach to the choice of design.
Features and benefits of classic style
Classic style bathrooms are an extraordinary solution, unusual for many. In fact, the classic branches of design (classic, neoclassic, classicism) are nothing more than a demonstration of the palace theme. This is a rather elegant interior design, the distinctive features of which are the following:
- stucco elements or their imitation;
- the use of gilding;
- high ceiling decorated with different decor;
- a clear indication of the status of the owners of the house;
- the presence of expensive interior components;
- decorating the room with elements of the palace antiquity;
- compliance with strict symmetry;
- subordination of the interior to the geometry of forms.
Basically, all the rules are subject to the display of luxury. It is rather a room equipped with a bathroom or a toilet, rather than a bathroom in the usual sense. Each piece of furniture should reflect belonging to the classic branch of design. However, it is the directions of the classic style that determine the difference in design. Some interiors are deliberately royal, others are adapted to the modern approach to furnishing.
Natural materials with visible massiveness and reliability are in priority. Today, the use of wood for the bathroom is rather controversial. This is especially inappropriate in a room with limited footage. Furniture of the area remote from the bathtub can also be wooden, but with preliminary impregnation with a moisture-proof compound.
In this room, you will have to limit yourself to textures or imitation of natural raw materials of interior items.
A classic-style bathroom has the following advantages:
- it is aesthetically pleasing. It creates a special atmosphere conducive to relaxation and comfort;
- the design has a lot of colors. Using the desired color, you can visually change the bathroom space;
- furnishings for design are variable in size. A wide assortment allows you to choose furniture and accessories, taking into account the dimensions of a particular room;
- the choice of materials on the market is extensive, due to this, it is possible to choose environmentally friendly raw materials for arranging a bathroom;
- all furniture elements are created on modern equipment using new technologies, due to this, the installed furniture is distinguished by its durability;
- trademarks provide an approach to each customer. If the bathroom has non-standard dimensions, it is possible to manufacture custom-made furniture parts;
- they are variable in stylistic devices. Using different details of the arrangement, you can create a different interior composition, indicating the overall design concept.
It is worth noting the disadvantages of the classic solution in the design of the bathroom.
- Pomp is not always appropriate. Not everyone can make such an interior harmonious and truly stylish.
- You can equip a bathroom in a classic style if it is the style of the entire home. Otherwise, the furnishings lose their sense of taste.
- The components require careful selection. They are bought taking into account the general concept of stylistics, which is not always possible due to the high cost.
- Classic-style lamps do not always meet the safety requirements for use in bathrooms.
- Due to the price of products for classic bathroom designs, products are often counterfeited and sold as originals. This is reflected in the service life of the furniture.
Subtleties of design
Since the style itself betrays elements of palace solemnity, their number should be dosed. Modern classics do not accept the abundance of floor lamps, massive curtains on the windows, as well as the use of products with carved elements. This is all in the past. However, the basic elements of the classic design branches still remain.
In addition to symmetry and a geometric accent, arched shapes are preferred. These can be niches in the wall, the shape of mirrors, ledges, partitions. Sometimes the theme of a semicircle can be traced in the design of lamps, ceiling decoration.
The same can be said about the shape of window openings (if any) and doors. Windows are sometimes imitations, using modern materials and fiber-optic lighting, you can create a realistic illusion of their presence.
When selecting stylistic elements, the footage of the bathroom matters. It is on him that the arrangement of furniture, its size, quantity, appropriateness of any accessory and its location depend. This is a design with a history and a clear purpose of each element, be it a small claw-foot bathtub or a mirror, a decorative vase or an unusual gilded soap dish.
The arrangement process begins at the design stage. After that, they begin to repair the premises.
Calculate every centimeter of usable area, including the thickness of panels, frame structures. They try to use the area rationally, leaving space for freedom of movement.
At the same time, one should not be zealous with the number of geometric shapes. For example, if the floor is covered with square pieces, they should not be in the decoration of the walls or ceiling. In this case, the furniture should not be dry, linear. It is necessary to soften the visual perception a little. There must be a balance between lines, shapes and the number of elements that indicate belonging to the classics.
Wall, floor and ceiling decoration
Materials for wall and ceiling ceilings are chosen taking into account the degree of moisture protection. Wallpaper is undesirable, as under the influence of water, steam and splashes, they will gradually move away from the base. You can, of course, decorate the walls with moisture-resistant coatings to support the classic style, but you should not count on their durability. The priority is for wall panels, finishing of the upper floor with a waterproof stretch film.
To increase the space, materials with a reflective surface are used, which is appropriate for the ceiling.
For the floor, high-strength floor coverings are usually chosen. These include tiles and porcelain stoneware. Epoxy floors are also applicable here. However, the best choice would be to use anti-slip tiles. This material has a slight relief, sometimes roughness, lack of gloss. Priority is given to granite and marble.
For the walls of the wettest area, it is better to use pastel shades. However, this is an unconventional pasting of walls according to the principle of a checkerboard. You need a composite pattern cladding. The bottom can be pasted over with wall panels, the top - with tiles. For the walls of the area with a sink, it is better to choose plastic panels of large width.
Selection of furniture and plumbing
Furniture and bathroom fixtures in the spirit of classicism, classicism and neoclassical style must be selected taking into account a single color scheme. Together they should look like a single ensemble. These are expensive products made in noble colors like wood or marble. The countertop with a sink can be made of artificial or natural stone. MDF or chipboard are not even considered as they will quickly fall apart.
Bathroom, sink is decorated with a single decor.It does not matter which model is installed in the room - angular, rectangular, symmetrical, Jacuzzi, asymmetric. This does not affect the type and size of the bowl, but the shower cabin can break the harmony of the classic style. If the bathtub has legs, the bending of their shape or the pattern must be repeated in the decoration of the furniture. There should be no fragmentation anywhere.
Classic style furniture is characterized by massiveness. This means that it is better to use a wood-like texture for the bathroom. Ideally, it should be matte or varnished, painted in a natural color.
Light colors are also allowed, but without the slightest hint of a synthetic base. Demonstration of it will cross out the whole idea of classical stylistics.
Lighting
Classic bathroom lighting was originally based on the use of massive central lights. These are chandeliers on suspensions, chains, as well as crystal and candles. Today, strict requirements are imposed on lighting fixtures, which excludes the use of chandeliers in bathrooms. For example, the protection class does not allow the use of an open device near the bath, although it is extremely important to show its belonging to the classics.
For this reason, it is necessary to divide the bathroom into separate functional areas. For a more dangerous area (above the bathroom), exclusively closed white models with an anti-fog effect are used. Products for illuminating the mirror over the sink can be made with a floor lamp if they:
- equipped with safe sources of lamps with moisture protection;
- located at a sufficient height;
- have protective fences.
This style requires several fixtures supporting the desired direction. Most often they are located on the same wall. The bath area is illuminated with built-in or spotlights: controversial, but acceptable. Safe sources of lamps are LEDs. They shine brightly at low power, work for a long time, do not heat up, are resistant to voltage surges, do not buzz during operation. In addition, diodes do not emit mercury vapor into the air like their luminescent counterparts. A chandelier above the bathroom is out of the question.
Accessories
Unconditional attributes indicating belonging to classic solutions are gold plated items such as:
- mixer taps with spout and shower;
- handles for valves, tables, handrails;
- sconce legs, openwork decoration of lamps;
- ceiling cornices, baguettes;
- switch sockets;
- frames for decorative panels.
In addition, mirrors and wall sconces are accessories. Classic-style mirrors should have a gilded frame or an option to match the main decoration of the decor. Mirror sheets without frames are not allowed. Sconces often resemble floor lamps, although these models can only be used away from the bath and at a safe height from the sink. They illuminate the mirror from the sides or from above.
Demonstration of ribbon illumination is undesirable: it is better to leave the know-how to other branches of the design.
Color solutions
Classic bathroom colors are varied. It is important that this room feels spacious. For this reason, background shades should be light. However, boring and the use of one tone is unacceptable. It is important to show the versatility of the tones used. This is achieved by combining related tones, predominantly warm, capable of creating an inviting atmosphere.
Most often they use 3-4 tones, softening them with the white color of the ceiling material. Today, the priority is the tones of the beige and pastel group. These are milky, creamy, bleached peach and coral, pinkish-orange, sandy shades, cappuccino. The use of red, black, blue breaks down the concept of stylistics. The red color makes the interior heavy, even if it is based on a related wine tone.
To give expressiveness to light tones, classic or dark brown touches are added in details, accessories, and decor of furniture elements. In addition to these tones, gilding and bronze are generously used, imitating forging, gilded decor. Silver, metallic surfaces are undesirable as they tend to have a vintage character. If silver has a cool gold tint, it works well for the design.
Beautiful examples of interiors
An original example of classic bathroom furnishings. Geometry of forms, presence of a column, imitation of stucco molding harmoniously coexist in the interior.
The accent on gilding draws out any design. The combination of mosaics, tiles, beige tones and laconic lamps conveys the elegance of the design.
Classics in the modern sense. Columns, mirror framing, gilding in the decor remain. The light and curtains bring a touch of novelty. An elegant worktop and a table with lots of drawers add comfort to the bathroom.
A modern approach to bathroom furnishings. Columns, steps to the bowl, accent on the wall are combined with composite lighting and ceiling decoration.
An interesting example using a chandelier on a high ceiling, adapted to modern style. Built-in and central lighting, the presence of a picture, a chic mirror frame, the presence of stucco on the walls and bathtub, mosaics on the floor create a solemn interior.
