Bathroom design with shower: design options
By choosing the optimal shower cubicle and installing it in a suitable place in the bathroom, you can achieve not only the ergonomics and functionality of the design, but also create a particular style in the room.
With the right layout, the bathroom will turn into a place of relaxation, or, on the contrary, will become the room where you can quickly invigorate and recharge.
Advantages
Showers are increasingly preferred in modern living spaces. They are organically combined with the traditional bathroom and are increasingly replacing it. These trends are due to the advantages that modern shower designs have.
First of all, the compactness of most devices should be noted. On average, they occupy an area of 1-1.5 square meters. m. There are cabins with a side length of 75 cm. No less ergonomic will be a shower enclosure, for the creation of which it is required to block 2 perpendicular walls by organizing a corner. The corner only needs side panels and a door. The latter can be replaced by curtains.
Thus, a shower room can be easily accommodated even in an apartment, or rather, a small bathroom. Its installation provides an increase in the usable area in the bathroom. Despite their small size, shower cabins are easy to use - everything you need to take water procedures is always at hand, on a shelf in the cabin.
Due to the fact that the structure is closed, walls and other surfaces in the room are protected from splashes and soap deposits.
The use of a shower room allows you to almost 3 times reduce water consumption compared to the cost of maintaining a bathroom. Even inexpensive models are equipped with a set of additional options that turn showering into a real spa relaxation.. Among the most popular are the functions of hydromassage, contrast showers, tropical showers, the possibility of using a steam generator and aromatherapy. A bath with a sauna, in which you can recreate the atmosphere of a Turkish hammam, a Finnish sauna or an infrared bath, has indisputable convenience and efficiency.
It is important that closed cabins are characterized by high thermal efficiency... All models are completely safe, since they are manufactured using impact-resistant glass, environmentally friendly materials, and the surface of the cabin floor (pallet) has an anti-slip coating.
Project and layout
When organizing the space in the bathroom, you should carefully plan the location of plumbing, furniture, taking into account the size of all elements and the location of communications.
In addition to the shower cabin, the following objects must be placed in the bathroom:
- Sink. It is more convenient to choose options with a curbstone under it. It will hide communications and accommodate hygiene items.
- Mirror. It is better if it is also fixed to the cabinet.
- Washing machine.
- There is also a toilet in the combined bathrooms.
It is important that all doors open without hindrance and that there is a passageway at least 40 cm wide.
The shower stall itself must have sides of at least 80 cm, on average, its area is no more than a meter. In a small apartment, you can often combine a bathroom and a toilet to increase the usable area of the bathroom.Installing a shower stall is one of the measures to achieve this. The installation of a wall-mounted toilet and sink will help save space. However, a hinged sink is not always convenient, sometimes it is more logical to purchase a cabinet under the sink. It will accommodate the necessary bath accessories.
For a combined bathroom, you can choose one of the standard layout options:
- If we are talking about a square room, the area of which is within 4 sq. m, then the shower cabin is placed in the corner, a sink is installed next to it. A toilet bowl is placed opposite the shower room; if possible, it can be separated by a partition.
- For rectangular rooms with an area of 6-6, 5 sq. m with a door on the wide side, the location of the cabin on the same side as the door will be successful. The toilet and sink are opposite the shower.
- In narrow rectangular rooms, it is recommended to place plumbing along one of the long walls. If possible, separate the toilet with a partition.
Before embarking on repair work and buying plumbing, you should develop a bathroom design. Otherwise, the purchased equipment may not fit in the bathroom or it will be uncomfortable to use.
Any redevelopment of the bathroom and toilet must comply with the requirements of SNiP. Otherwise, the project will not only be illegal, but also unsafe.
When organizing a combined bathroom, take care of forced ventilation, since water vapor will accumulate in a small room.
Preparation and installation of communications
The installation of a shower cabin, regardless of whether it is mounted in a "Khrushchev" or a private house, requires a number of preparatory steps. The floor should be leveled, the necessary communications installed and the sewage system connected. It is important to make sure of the quality and power of the wiring. Only after that, you can proceed with the collection, installation and connection of the shower box and placement according to the previously drawn up furniture plan.
The shower cubicle must be installed on a prepared and reinforced base. There is no need to finish it with the same materials that are used to decorate the floor (especially if expensive materials are used for this). However, the cab cannot be mounted on a concrete screed or bare floor. As a covering for the booth, ceramic tiles, linoleum, wooden boards protected with nitro lacquer are optimal.
First of all, a pallet is installed. If there are legs, adjust their height and ensure that the cab is level. The next step is to assemble the dome of the shower stall to which the shower is attached. The dome is available only in closed boxes, which, however, are rarely purchased for a combined bathroom.
After that, you can start assembling the structure - connect the side and rear panels, install the doors. Then the dome and the resulting structure are connected, after which it is erected on a pallet.
For open cabins and corner counterparts, curtains can be attached instead of the door. However, if the bathroom is shared, it is still better to install a door (sliding or folding) or a small partition.
Types, dimensions and shape
Modern models are divided into 3 types:
Open
Such structures do not have back walls; instead, the walls of the room are used. Sometimes the drain of such a device is organized directly in the floor, that is, it does not have a pallet. The dome (top panel) is also absent, so there is no need to talk about high-quality thermal insulation in such structures. Their advantages are compactness, ease of installation and low cost.
Closed
Closed is a box that has its own walls, floor (pallet), doors and ceiling. Due to the design features, they demonstrate higher thermal efficiency, and also have additional options. The variety of shapes and sizes allows you to find a closed cabin for each specific room.
Combined
Combines shower and bath. When choosing a cab with a pallet, pay attention to its height. High (from 40 cm), suitable for families with small children, as well as for large shower rooms.
In the latter case, it will become an analogue of the bathroom.
Small, 10-15 cm high pallets are convenient for the elderly, as well as for those who, due to illness, cannot step over a high threshold. For everyone else, a pallet of medium height (20-30 cm) will be optimal.
As for materials, the most convenient are acrylic pallets, which are characterized by low cost, long service life, variety of shapes and sizes, and ease of maintenance. When choosing this option, pay attention that the structure has reinforcement, this is the only way to count on its strength and durability.
Cast iron warms up faster than all materials, but such a pallet has a considerable cost and great weight. It is better to refuse to purchase steel and enamelled structures - they make too much noise when water flows down, quickly lose their attractive appearance.
From an aesthetic point of view, ceramics are attractive, but they take longer to heat up. Before stepping into a warm cabin, you will have to flush the water. The disadvantage of this model is its fragility and high price.
In a small room
In a small bathroom, the shower stall often does not complement, but replaces the bathtub. Among the popular models are shower enclosures, since they differ in their minimum dimensions. This design looks organic even in combined bathrooms. The corner shower can be in the shape of a quarter circle, which makes it more aesthetically pleasing for classic interiors. You can also save space by installing a square cab version.
If there are niches in the room, you should not think about how to get rid of them or decorate them, but turn them into a niche cabin. In this case, the space "inconvenient" at first glance will become useful.
As a rule, shower cabins for small spaces have sliding doors.
In small spaces, cabins with high pallets tend to be cumbersome. Visually expanding the space will allow light finishing materials for walls, mirror surfaces. Among the common finishing materials are tiles. It is recommended to choose tiles of light shades, semi-gloss or glossy with reflective elements.
The choice of ornament should be approached responsibly. You will have to exclude a large pattern, give preference to mosaics, vertically oriented geometric patterns.
With regard to panels and design, preference should be given to a light palette. Designs of blue, blue, aquamarine shades look nice in the bathroom, which add depth to the room.
A good option is transparent structures that seem to float in the air without limiting the area. If funds allow, give preference to non-profile structures that are not framed by a metal profile. Due to this, they literally dissolve in the room.
So that the room does not look boring and impersonal, you can make a darker floor, combined with other interior elements, or choose bright accessories.
High-tech and Japanese styles are most suitable for a small bathroom with a shower. The first assumes an abundance of glass and mirror surfaces, manufacturability, minimalism. A room in the Japanese style is more comfortable, it is characterized by the use of natural materials or their imitation, sliding doors, screens, neutral colors. An image of a sakura branch or a hieroglyph can serve as an accent. A marine style also looks organic in a small room - blue and white surfaces, accessories reminiscent of the sea, transparent doors or curtains.
In a spacious room
To create an original interior, a large bathroom gives a greater flight of imagination. However, in such a room it is also important to think over the interior features, to decide on the layout. Otherwise, the effect of piling up things, the fragmentation of interior details cannot be avoided.
The best ergonomics can be achieved by placing the shower enclosure in a corner. In a spacious room it is possible to place multifunctional closed boxes. However, if you wish, you can place the booth anywhere in the bathroom. Round shower cabins installed in the center of the room look original. Zoning a large room will help to make the room cozy and comfortable.
Owners of spacious rooms can afford a spacious (with sides from 100 cm) shower cabin with a high tray. In this case, with the availability of additional equipment, you can organize a jacuzzi. Instead of hanging pedestals and shelves, you can place pencil cases around the perimeter of the room or floor pedestals.
The color gamut is almost unlimited as well. Chocolate, dark gray, deep burgundy and even black surfaces look spectacular. However, they should be "diluted" with light details or mosaics. Original lamps, large mirrors and even indoor flowers - all this will help create an atmosphere in a large bathroom.
Finishing of the floor, walls, ceiling: materials
The surfaces of the bathroom, where the shower stall is installed, are usually tiled with ceramic tiles. The tiles are resistant to moisture and aggressive detergents. Modern options are distinguished by a variety of designs and a rich color palette, which allows you to bring bold design ideas to life. The material is demanding on the quality of working bases (it should only be flat surfaces), without special skills it is unlikely to be correctly mounted.
Ceramic tiles can be used not only on the surface of the walls, but also on the floor.
To do this, you should choose specially floor tiles that have an anti-slip coating (anti-slip).
In addition to ceramics, there are other finishes available. One of the available is cladding with plastic panels. You should choose special sheets that can withstand high humidity.
Tiles, linoleum and other coatings that are not suitable for use in high humidity conditions are not used as flooring. The best solution would be to install ceramic tiles, moisture-resistant laminate or epoxy self-leveling flooring. It is better to use laminate flooring in conjunction with closed-type cabins, having treated it with moisture-resistant impregnations. The tile can be used under a warm floor. The advantage of an epoxy floor is its versatility: it is suitable for wet rooms, copes with the task of waterproofing, and looks attractive. The downside is the high price of the material and the need to invite specialists for pouring.
The ceiling is usually made using plastic or plasterboard panels, it can be tensioned, painted or whitewashed.
Design character: relaxation or tone
Choosing a bathroom design should not only be based on considerations of accessibility, appearance or practicality of materials and plumbing. First of all, you should decide what kind of room is closer to you. Will the bathroom be a place for relaxation or a room where you can cheer up, raise your tone.
If you dismantle the bathtub in the bathroom of a standard apartment building, you can get a considerable usable area. In this case, you can purchase a medium-sized cab and install it in a corner. The middle pallet does not weigh down the interior, and the matt reflective doors of the booth visually increase the space.
Tiles of two similar pastel shades are used as decoration, and a ceramic border is used as a pattern. Please note that the tiles on the floor are laid diagonally, which also contributes to the visual increase of the room.
Convenient shelves allow not only to arrange bath accessories, but also mask the sewer pipes.
The next option is another example of a combined bathroom. True, here part of the wall has been prudently preserved, which makes it possible to zone the room. The design in warm terracotta tones allowed for a bright, relaxing room. White curbs, ceiling and other interior elements are designed to dilute the red tone.
An important point is that this beautiful warm orange hue absorbs light and, if there is a lack of it, the room looks dull and gloomy. Intense lighting allows you to avoid this effect. A transparent cabin design with rounded doors was chosen for this room, which also corresponds to the general mood of relaxation.
Achieve intimacy and comfort in the next layout option allows the competent placement of plumbing and furniture, the use of contrasting color schemes. The centerpiece is the enclosed cab with a high pallet. The rest of the space is a sink with a toilet, a washing machine. Yellow tiles look bright, sunny and cheerful in the decoration of the bathroom. It goes well with snow-white tiles, plumbing fixtures and a shower. The room, despite the sufficient area, is designed in a minimalist style. This style, like the color palette, promotes awakening, associated with dynamism and energy.
Those who are not afraid to be bright and original can choose a bathroom decorated with red shades. At the same time, white tiles, matte surfaces of the shower stall predominate. Please note that there is a lot of light in the room, which, in turn, is reflected from light and glass surfaces. Otherwise, excessive aggressiveness of the interior cannot be avoided.
