Cladding with wooden clapboard is becoming more and more popular today. Before starting work, you need to know how to nail it correctly and which fasteners to choose. Read the answers to these questions below.

Peculiarities

Wooden lining is a versatile facing material, its installation on any type of surface is not associated with special difficulties. The features of the operational properties allow the use of wooden lining in almost any conditions.

Advantages and disadvantages

Wooden lining is a practical and reliable material with extensive advantages, and its disadvantages can be compensated for by additional processing of the coating.

Several characteristics can be attributed to the positive qualities of the lining.

  • Completely natural product. Non-toxic, does not cause allergic reactions, does not emit toxic substances when burned.
  • Nice smell. The wood, depending on the species, exudes a certain specific smell, thereby creating an excellent atmosphere that has a positive effect on the health and mood of the residents.
  • Great appearance. From an aesthetic point of view, the texture of the wood grain is attractive. A wide selection of different patterns, colors and shades is provided by a variety of wood species, allows you to create a unique interior design and fully satisfy the most sophisticated taste.
  • Acceptable price.
  • Camouflages communication lines. Gas and heating pipes, wiring, distribution units and other objects will perfectly hide under the clapboard.
  • High vapor permeability. Provides ventilation of the walls, as a result of the "breathing" of the premises and the absence of dampness.
  • Easy installation. The surface finished with clapboard does not require scrupulous processing, the panels can be easily cut to size. The products are fastened by the lamellar method - for each other and can be mounted by a person without perfected skills, subject to familiarization with the technology.
  • Durability. With the correct selection of impregnations and timely maintenance, wooden lining can be used for up to 50 years.
  • Additional finishing. The surface of the lining can be coated with various types of finishing materials: paint, varnish, artistic decoration, etc.
  • Weak moisture resistance. The double quality, in a positive sense, is considered as a natural regulator of humidity, when, when it rises, the wood absorbs excess, and when it decreases, the moisture evaporates back into the air.
  • Excellent heat and sound insulation.

The weak qualities of wooden lining include:

  • weak moisture resistance;
  • vulnerability to sudden changes in temperature;
  • high flammability;
  • the possibility of deformation of the structure.

The disadvantages of wood can be compensated for by impregnating the material against the negative influences present in a particular situation, for example, with a hydrophobic mixture when used in a bathroom. In addition, the level of moisture resistance varies, depending on the type of wood, which must also be taken into account when choosing a material.

The main characteristics of the material

To better understand the features of the lining, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the main characteristics of the material from which it is made - wood.

Several indicators are the main quality parameters.

  • Strength. A property that characterizes the ability of a tree to withstand mechanical stress. The strength depends on the thickness of the panel and the type of wood. When choosing lamellas, the specifics of their operation should be taken into account and the appropriate option should be selected.
  • Hardness. As the hardness increases, processing becomes more difficult, such as trimming panels, however, this property directly affects the surface's ability to withstand objects attached to it, such as a TV.
  • Moisture resistance. Determines the conditions in which this or that wood species can be exploited, can be enhanced with the help of impregnation.
  • Grade. Determines the quality of the raw materials from which the lining is made. The main standards are European DIN and GOST, in addition, the manufacturer may have its own grading criteria, so it is worth knowing the general differences.
  1. "Top grade", "Extra", "Premium". The ideal product texture without defects such as knots or cracks, color irregularities or roughness is possible only on the back of the bar.
  2. "Class A". It is permissible to have knots up to 1 cm in diameter, no more than 1 piece per running meter, small, possibly putty cracks. Minor flaws on the back.
  3. "Class B". Knots with a diameter of no more than a third of the panel width, quantitatively - 4 pieces per running meter. Hollow resin pockets, minor through cracks may be present.
  4. "Class C". All lining that does not meet the above criteria. A significant number and strength of defects, violation of the monotony of color with spots and other flaws.
  • Wear resistance. An important quality when decorating rooms with constant contact with the surface, for example, a bathhouse or a gym.
  • Fire resistance. Determines the speed of wood combustion, can be modified by impregnations. The characteristic is important when used in places with an open source of fire, for example, in baths or near fireplaces.
  • Aesthetic features.
  • Therapeutic effect.

Wooden lining has two main classifications: according to the material from which it is made, and the shape that is given to it during processing.

By material of manufacture

The lining is made from various types of wood, it determines both the main operational and aesthetic features of the product. Also, the material determines the price category of the lining: the rarer the species of wood, the more expensive the lamellas. The main types are:

Deciduous

  • Linden. High strength, pleasant texture and color that darkens over time. Needs impregnation treatment to improve durability and maintain appearance. Can be used in rooms with high humidity.
  • Alder. It stands out for its excellent moisture resistance and a high content of tannins that evaporate into the air when heated. For its qualities it is widely used in the decoration of saunas and baths. Beautiful shade, high heat and sound insulation. Must be treated with impregnation to extend service life.
  • Oak. An elite variety among hardwoods. High strength, excellent aesthetic and performance properties. Mainly used for interior cladding.

Exotic

A group of valuable red rocks, mainly growing in the tropics. Wood with excellent aesthetic properties is used for interior design finishes.

Conifers

A distinctive feature is the high moisture resistance of the entire group.

  • Spruce. It stands out for its softness and plasticity, it is easy to process, it can be bent into rounded shapes on a permanent basis. Very low surface roughness. Beautiful, but discreet texture. Weaknesses are: a large number of knots, a predisposition to fungal infection and the presence of bugs, one of the most non-moisture resistant of conifers. Often it undergoes additional processing during the production process.Spruce boards can be used for both interior and facade work.
  • Pine. One of the most common lining materials. Combines strength and lightness with wide availability. Good texture and color, as well as a pleasant smell will create an excellent atmosphere of coziness and comfort at an affordable price.

The disadvantages include the possible release of resin even after special treatment for up to 10 years. The low density contributes to the damage to the surface of the planks, even under negligible impact.

  • Larch. High strength, comparable to oak, increases over time from the resinization process, excellent performance in all parameters, exceeding the corresponding qualities of other conifers. Excellent thermal insulation, the breed contains phytoncides, natural antioxidants and substances that calm the nervous system. The resin of the tree is a natural remedy for parasites, which reduces the cost of additional processing. Excellent texture combined with a pleasant red shade that does not fade over time. The disadvantage of this breed is its high cost.
  • Cedar. It has a pronounced characteristic odor due to the high resin content in the wood. The material is not subject to the warping process and has a high density. Good thermal insulation is combined with durability both for indoor use and for facade decoration, provided that it is impregnated with a hydrophobic mixture.

Also contains thujaplicin, a natural antiseptic that helps calm the nervous system and relieve fatigue. In addition, the specific smell of the breed repels mosquitoes. The disadvantages, like larch, include the high cost of cedar lining.

By the form of manufacture

In the process of processing, the lamellas are given a certain shape, which determines the specifics of the locking mechanism, and, accordingly, the installation of the product and its appearance.

Recently, brick products have become popular.

  • "Standard" ("Calm"). It features a flat and very smooth surface, reminiscent of a bar.
  • "Eurolining". It is similar to the standard shape, but leaves a small groove 15 mm wide at the joint. Higher quality standards are adhered to in the manufacture.
  • Softline. It is similar to the standard look, but has more rounded corners, creating a specific relief of the finished surface.
  • "Landhouse" ("Village House"). It is characterized by longitudinal grooves and slightly convex edges.
  • "American". It is distinguished by a specific horizontal fastening method. Forms a characteristic coating with an overlapping arrangement of lamellas, which helps to protect the panels from precipitation penetration under the surface.
  • "Blockhouse". The wall, trimmed with such clapboard, is similar to the wall of a house made of round timber.
  • "Wooden wallpaper". A new type of lining for interior work, imitates the walls of a wooden house. It is subdivided into subspecies:
    1. "wave";
    2. "House";
    3. "Embossed";
    4. "With brushing";
    5. "threaded".

Dimensions (edit)

In addition to a certain shape, planks can be made in various sizes. The permissible deviations of European products are regulated by DIN quality standards, domestic manufacturers - by GOST.

The following values apply to the standards.

  • "Standard lining". The thickness of such products ranges from 12 to 40 mm, the width is from 76 to 200 mm, and the length is from 20 cm to 6 meters. Thorn - from 4 to 5 mm. Quite significant weight is characteristic.
  • "Eurolining". It is characterized by more accurate dimensions, in thickness it is 13, 16 and 19 mm, in width - 80, 100, 110, 120 mm, length is from 50 cm to 6 meters, spike is from 8 to 9 mm.

May have errors: thickness 0.7 mm, width 1 mm, length +/- 5 mm, thorn +/- 5 mm.

Decorating ideas

The lining can be used for a solid, unpretentious cladding and at the same time create a rather beautiful environment, it can also be used for various design techniques.

  • To enhance the feeling of open space, you need to combine lining with matte texture and lacquered products when cladding walls and ceilings.
  • By painting the lining with oil paints with your own hands, you can achieve an artistic texture with an original pattern. This method is widespread among creative people.
  • With the help of lining, you can create various shapes by applying the planks locally, rather than as a continuous coating.
  • "Japanese processing" involves the creation of patterns using a blowtorch with further opening with oil paint, revealing the texture created by burning.
  • An excellent combination is wood paneling, painted in pastel colors, and a bright, contrasting ceiling surface, for example, purple or acid green.
  • An interesting idea is the combination of wooden lining and phytoplites of dark shades with a pronounced woody texture in various combinations.
  • You can place lighting fixtures under the clapboard, while leaving small gaps for light to penetrate. Such decoration will create a cozy, calm, pacifying atmosphere.
  • Decorating individual zones with clapboard enhances the comfort of the room. It is better to use products painted with pink, bluish, pastel and other soft shades, in combination with bright, but not catchy furniture.
  • For the attic floor, a good option is to combine lining for ceiling planes and wallpaper for the walls. This design is not as overwhelmed as the solid cladding of the "wooden room".

If you need to sheathe a plastic door, then white lining is best.

Beautiful examples in the interior

A contrasting combination of milky and coffee shades is combined with the use of lining of various shapes. The room is zoned, the two-tone interior looks very impressive and original.

The harmony of the lining and transparent panels that hide the lighting fixtures in the wavy ceiling gives the room a unique originality and deep ideological spirit of expensive design renovation.

The combination of contrasting colors changes the visual perception of the space, the original decoration of the balcony creates an excellent mood while drinking a cup of coffee or tea.
