Top dressing is necessary for every plant. With them, plantings grow more actively, gain color better. In addition, beneficial nutrients improve the taste of the fruit and can prolong the fruiting period, as well as strengthen the plants, which will greatly help them with the attacks of various pests. How, when and what to feed cucumbers with, we will tell below.

Frequency

Summer residents who already have experience in this regard are advised to feed the cucumber plantings 4 times.

  1. The first feeding is usually carried out two weeks after planting cucumbers in open ground or in a greenhouse. Most often, at this stage, the plant already has several leaves.
  2. The second time is fed in the phase when the first buds begin to form in the plant.
  3. In the third, when it has already bloomed.
  4. The fourth feeding, which is also the last, is carried out during the fruiting period.

Some gardeners also carry out the fifth feeding. However, this is done only if the soil where the plants are planted is not highly fertile, which may lead to a decrease in their fruiting.

In addition, you can feed the plant again if yellow color predominates on their leaves, as well as if they begin to fade or grow poorly and do not differ in abundant fruiting.

What can you feed?

Organic

Organic fertilizers include, for example, mullein infusion or bird droppings. Summer residents with extensive experience recommend preparing the necessary nutrient solution in advance so that it has time for tincture.

To prepare such a composition, you will need to dissolve bird droppings in warm water in a ratio of 1 to 15. After 5 days, you can safely water your plantings with a ready-made solution.

If you decide to prepare a composition from a mullein, then you will need to take 1.5 kilograms per 10 liters of water. It should also be infused, after which it will need to be filtered.

Formulations containing these two ingredients help to saturate plantings with nitrogen. Typically, such solutions are used during the period when plants are already blooming to help them gain essential nutrients and strengthen them. In this case, for each of the plants, you need to allocate a liter of the finished solution.

When ovaries begin to form in cucumbers, during this period they especially need feeding, which will supply them with potassium and calcium. For this, summer residents use solutions containing ash.

To do this, you need to fill 1/3 of the ash bucket with hot water. All this solution should be infused for 2-3 days in a warm and dark place. After that, the liquid must be filtered. It can be used both for spraying plantings and for watering.

However, keep in mind that top dressing from ash cannot be combined with dressings that contain nitrogen, otherwise you risk causing great harm to the plant.

Mineral fertilizers

As for mineral dressings, not all summer residents approve of them due to the fact that they are made under chemical conditions and there is a risk of harming the plant. Nevertheless, if you use such funds correctly, exactly following the instructions and observing the dosages, then everything will be fine with your plantings, they will be able to receive the substances they need and continue to actively grow. These substances are highly effective, the best of them are the following:

  • ammonium nitrate;
  • superphosphate;
  • potassium nitrate;
  • nitrophoska;
  • potassium salt.

For self-preparation of the solution, you can use several of these substances at once. So, for example, for 10 liters of water, take 30 grams of ammonium nitrate, 40 grams of superphosphate and 20 grams of potassium salt. Such a solution during the flowering period of the plant will supply it with the most important substances, which include phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Some summer residents also resort to the use of industrial fertilizers when the plant begins the ovary development phase. Such funds can be purchased at any suburban store. The most effective of them are the complexes produced by the following manufacturers:

  • "HERA";
  • Fertika;
  • Agricola;
  • "Clear sheet";
  • "Good Power";
  • "Biona";
  • Fasco.

Among their fertilizers there are those that are suitable exclusively for cucumber plantings, and there are those that can be used for other crops. When using them, we strongly recommend that you follow the instructions found on the packaging.

Biostimulants

Such funds are also actively used by summer residents. They are distinguished by their environmental friendliness and the absence of chemicals in the composition. Yeast is considered the most effective biostimulant. It is not difficult to prepare top dressing from them.

Both dry and raw yeast can be used to create this fertilizer. To do this, you will need a pack of this component, which should be diluted with 10 liters of heated water. After that, you need to leave the solution in order for it to ferment for 6 hours. For greater effectiveness, you can add 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar to the solution. Then the solution can be used, about 1.5 liters are spent on each plant.

At the same time, keep in mind that it is recommended to use the solution immediately after the completion of cooking, otherwise it will lose all its properties. You can store it for a maximum of 3 days!

Such a fertilizing solution has a beneficial effect on the root system, allowing it to accelerate development and get stronger, thanks to which the plant becomes more resistant to diseases and gives good and tasty fruits.

Use the yeast solution 3 times per season:

  • during the period when the first shoots were formed, which gives an impetus for their more active growth;
  • during the appearance of the first flowers, which contributes to the formation of ovaries;
  • at the end of the first stage of fruiting, which has a beneficial effect on the second stage.

Folk remedies

Milk and iodine

A similar solution has a beneficial effect on the plant. It helps the planting grow more actively, strengthens it, increasing its resistance to attacks of parasitic insects, and also improves the taste of the fruit. Such a solution is used both for watering and for treating the root system.

For this solution, you need 25 drops of iodine and a liter of milk. All this should mix well and infuse for about 10 hours. After that, the solution can be used, but at intervals of 2 weeks.

Iodine is suitable not only for strengthening plants and stimulating their growth, but also for treating brown rot. To do this, you need 100 milliliters of the product and 200 milliliters of water. Treatment of diseased parts must be carried out within 5 days.

Honey

This is another component that experienced summer residents use to feed plants. To prepare the solution, you will need 20 grams of honey and a liter of heated water. All this must be thoroughly mixed. You can start using the solution when its temperature equals the ambient temperature.

This method helps attract beneficial insects, which will contribute to the pollination of plants, thereby increasing your yield. Usually the solution is used at the very beginning of summer, before the plant begins to bloom. They are treated with such a tool several times per season.

In addition, there is another solution containing honey that will help your planting to take root and subsequently provide you with a tasty and rich harvest. For this solution, 30 grams of honey is used, which is stirred in 6 liters of water. After that, plant cuttings are soaked in it, which takes about 10 hours. During this time, the plants are saturated with essential vitamins and strengthened.

Potato peelings

For this fertilizer, you need a potato peel, which must be filled with hot water. After that, the solution must be left for 2-3 days, and after this period, refill it with 5 liters of water. After that, this mixture can be used to water your plantings, it can strengthen them, increasing immunity and thereby protecting against diseases.

If desired, you can use orange peel or carrot peels instead of potato peels.

Onion peel

Another simple solution that can be used for spraying, adding to the soil or for root treatment. To prepare it, you will need to pour half a glass of onion husks with 5 liters of water. This solution should be infused for about 7 days. After that, the solution is filtered, getting rid of the onion husk, after which it is used in the garden or on greenhouse cucumbers.

How to deposit?

Plant nutrition should be applied depending on weather conditions. Cloudy, but dry and warm days are considered the most favorable for this. The plant, and specifically the cucumber, absorbs all the useful and necessary substances for about 2 hours, and therefore, if rain is expected according to the forecast, then fertilizing the soil and planting should not be carried out.

Before applying top dressing, so as not to harm the root system, the soil must be moistened. At the same time, you do not need to part with top dressing, it will not end with anything good for your planting.

Top dressing is best done depending on the condition of your cucumbers at intervals of at least 2 weeks.

Useful Tips

  1. Read the recipes carefully and follow the directions carefully. An excess of this or that mixture can damage the foliage of the plant.
  2. It is not necessary to part with fertilizers, this is fraught with an active set of green mass, which will negatively affect the fruiting of the plant.
  3. Before starting treatment, it is recommended to make sure that there are no children and pets on the site.
