Ordinary potassium permanganate in the garden is capable of performing many important functions: from disinfecting seed to pest control. To obtain the desired result, the use of this drug is always required in accordance with the instructions.

Advantages and disadvantages

Potassium permanganate looks like miniature crystals of a deep purple hue. When added to water, the substance instantly dissolves, coloring the liquid pinkish or purple. The composition of potassium permanganate contains potassium, oxygen and manganese itself. The presence of these components explains why the drug is so often used in horticulture and horticulture. Potassium permanganate is useful in that it allows you to effectively disinfect the soil, seeds, premises and even devices used in the garden.

It destroys fungal spores and makes it possible to activate the formation of young seedlings, contributing to the growth of green mass. The advantage is that the use of the substance does not in any way affect the taste characteristics of the plant or human health. The resulting solution is economical to use. It provides protection against aphids, wireworms and other pests, as well as kills mold and mildew. Potassium permanganate feeds the culture with ascorbic acid, which, as a result, activates the production of chlorophyll and accelerates the ripening of the crop.

Nevertheless, the use of potassium permanganate in the garden can be harmful, especially if it is used incorrectly or cultivated. An excess of manganese can spoil the taste characteristics of the product, and improper dilution leads to burns both on the plant and on the human skin.... When watering the land with a highly concentrated solution, the beneficial bacteria contained in it can be destroyed, its structure will change, and the processes of water exchange and gas exchange will be disrupted.

Finally, excessive irrigation of the plantings with a strong solution will lead to the fact that the content of magnesium and potassium in the soil will reach the level at which the plants are already dying.

How to use the solution?

An infusion based on potassium permanganate is used even at the stage of preparing crops for planting.

Seed dressing

Most gardeners, despite the appearance of new drugs, prefer to disinfect the seed in potassium permanganate. For this procedure, a concentrated solution is prepared, the shade of which can be designated as maroon, after which the seeds are dipped into it. As a rule, only 1 gram of crystals is taken in a glass of water. Beforehand, of course, the grains are cleaned of plant debris and carefully examined for rotten or deformed specimens. Disinfection lasts for 20-30 minutes, after which the seed is washed for several minutes under clean running water. It is better to soak the seeds on the eve of planting in open ground or sowing seedlings.

The processing of tubers and bulbs of flower crops, cuttings and root crops is similar. As a result, all harmful microbes and spores are destroyed, and the planting material germinates faster. The concentration in this case is selected depending on the type of plant. So, to soak potato tubers, you need to dilute a gram of the substance in 5 liters, and then leave them in water for almost 8 hours. Some gardeners, however, believe that half an hour is enough for this if the solution is created from 10 grams of potassium permanganate and 10 liters of liquid. To enhance the effect of the drug, you can add 2 grams of copper sulfate to it. It is enough to disinfect the bulbs for an hour in a mixture created from 3 grams of the substance and a liter of water.

If symptoms of diseases are found on the planting material, then the solution is made more concentrated - 20 grams of crystals are diluted in a liter, and the processing is reduced to 20 minutes.

Handling boxes, tools and greenhouse

At the end of the season, it is reasonable to process all working equipment with potassium permanganate: household gloves, rubber boots, shovels, rakes and other tools. Pruners, knives, scissors and other items used for pruning are disinfected before each use. To prepare the solution, a teaspoon of the drug is diluted in each liter of water. In late autumn, the frames of greenhouses and greenhouses are also washed with a solution, racks with boxes in basements and cellars are wiped. This should be done with a highly concentrated liquid, for the preparation of which 3 teaspoons are diluted in 10 liters of liquid.

All metal parts can be simply washed with potassium permanganate, and wooden elements are soaked in it for several hours, if possible, and then dried naturally in the sun. It is enough to rinse the walls of the structure with plain water. It is recommended to work in confined spaces with long sleeves, rubber gloves and a face shield. For convenience, it makes sense to use a sponge. After completing the processing of the greenhouse, it is recommended to open all windows and doors in it and leave it in this form for a couple of days. It should be mentioned that when processing the premises where the harvest will be stored, it is important to wipe not only the shelves, but also the walls in them. The basement or cellar is preliminarily cleared of debris and cobwebs.

Before planting seedlings, you should process the container that was previously used for growing seedlings. It is enough to rinse containers and pots made of plastic with an antiseptic, and wooden boxes will have to be soaked for several hours. For disposable peat pots, spraying with a strong solution is suitable. It is worth mentioning that if possible, these procedures should be carried out both at the beginning and at the end of the season.

Till the land before planting

Potassium permanganate is ideal for disinfecting soil for sowing seedlings... In a similar situation, the liquid warms up to +65 - +70 degrees, pink crystals are added to it. The shade of the antiseptic should be bright pink. After watering the soil mixture abundantly, you must wait until the soil cools down and dries slightly, after which it is time to move on to planting. The soil in the greenhouse and in the open air is treated in the same way before planting seedlings and seeds. A hot solution is also suitable for disinfecting near-trunk circles and aisles of perennials.

To etch the soil, 0.5 g of potassium permanganate is diluted in a liter of warm liquid. It is more convenient to water the beds using a regular watering can, although spraying is worth spraying for better digestibility.

It is important to realize that the addition of manganese acid salts to the soil will significantly increase the acidity level and to normalize it, you will need to use lime and dig up the surface.

Application against pests and diseases

Manganese solution helps fight the fungus that provokes the appearance of black leg on seedlings. While the seedlings are at home, they can be watered 1-2 times with a preparation of weak concentration, which is distinguished by a pale pink tint. To create it, 3-5 grams of crystals are diluted in 10 liters of water. Watering should be carried out strictly at the root.If the fungus nevertheless penetrated into the seedling box, then the destroyed shoots must be hastily removed along with the earthen lump. The hole that appears is filled with fresh soil, and the entire contents of the container are spilled with bright pink medicine.

Solanaceous crops such as peppers and potatoes often suffer from late blight. For the prevention of this disease, a solution based on potassium permanganate is also used. To prepare it, you need to dilute 10 liters of a slightly pink liquid, then add 200 grams of chopped garlic cloves to it and let the mixture brew for about 30 minutes. A couple of tablespoons of liquid soap or shampoo is added to the strained solution. Plants can be treated with this mixture every two weeks.

If you notice the symptoms of powdery mildew on hydrangeas or roses, you must immediately spray the cultures with a rich pink preparation. The aerial part of the affected plants is treated on average three times with an interval of 4-5 days. The use of potassium permanganate before flowering strawberries will protect the bushes from gray rot. The treatment is repeated again after a couple of weeks, but using an already more saturated composition. The healing solution is created by diluting 2 teaspoons of the substance in 10 liters of water. The larvae of the click beetle love to harm garden roots: beets, potatoes and carrots. However, disinfection of seeds before planting, as well as irrigation of the soil after germination of seedlings will allow them to cope... Potassium permanganate makes it possible to get rid of aphids, and in combination with boric acid - and from ants.

Top dressing

Potassium permanganate is an affordable fertilizer to which most crops respond positively. The lack of manganese in the soil leads to the fact that the plants have decreased immunity and yield drops. As a rule, it is possible to guess about manganese starvation by the state of young leaves: their veins remain green, and the main tissue takes on an unpleasant dirty yellow tint. Cabbage, beets, carrots and other vegetables should be fed with potassium permanganate in the middle of summer. For every 10 liters of water, 3 grams of crystals are added and this amount is enough to process 3-4 square meters of plantings. Gooseberries, raspberries and currants are watered with a pink solution in spring to stimulate fruit setting.

In spring, many crops can also be sprayed with a universal solution consisting of 3 grams of boric acid, the same amount of potassium permanganate, and 10 liters of water. To process strawberries, a glass of wood ash is added to the above components. In general, it is not forbidden to introduce manganese before sowing, immediately after planting and during active development. Fertilizing tomatoes, potassium permanganate should be applied for the first time when the seedlings reach three weeks of age. The solution should be prepared by dissolving 2 grams of the substance in 10 liters of water. The mixture can be either irrigated with seedlings or sprayed. This drug is used a couple of more times per season to prevent the development of late blight.

It is most effective to fertilize cucumbers with a manganese solution at the time of active fruiting, that is, during the period of the appearance of flowers and the formation of ovaries. The mixture is prepared in the same way as tomato.

Precautionary measures

It is allowed to dilute potassium permanganate only in a glass container.... The crystals should also be stored in a glass vessel with a hermetically sealed lid. The ready-made solution is not allowed to be left warm or under the sun's rays. Work should be done in rubber gloves to protect the skin, and it is also necessary to carefully monitor that the substance does not get on the mucous membranes.

Tips for summer residents

When preparing a solution of potassium permanganate, you should always take warm water, since the crystals dissolve faster in the heated liquid. After filling in the substance, the mixture must be stirred until it is completely dissolved.Irrigation is best organized in the evening, when the sun's rays do not fall on the leaves, which means there is no danger of burns. The liquid is sprayed not only on the plant itself, but also partially on the soil between the rows. By the way, the water itself must have a neutral pH level. The concentration of the solution is determined depending not only on the purpose of the drug, but also on the specifics of the culture.

Disinfection of greenhouses and greenhouses with potassium permanganate gardeners are advised to carry out a clear scheme. Having prepared a hot pink solution, you will also have to prepare a soft rag or sponge to apply it. First of all, the room is freed from plant debris, rotten ropes, branches, plant residues and other unnecessary items. All the equipment is immediately taken out from there, since its disinfection must be carried out separately in the fresh air. After cleaning the frame and walls from dirt, it is necessary to rinse all the elements of the buildings with a manganese solution. Upon completion, the doors and the sill are cleaned, as well as the outside of the building is wiped.
