You can grow a good harvest of carrots in any area. The main thing is to apply all the fertilizers necessary for its development on time. One of the popular dressings used to increase the yield of this root crop is boric acid solution.

Beneficial features

Boric acid is a colorless and odorless powder that dissolves well in water. Gardeners have been using this product for quite some time. This is not surprising, because boric solution helps to regulate carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Therefore, after making such a top dressing, the plants immediately become stronger and more attractive in appearance.

Boric solution is often used for feeding carrots. After all, it has a large number of advantages:

  • the solution helps to increase the size of the fruit and gives the carrots a bright orange color;
  • it increases the sugar content of the root vegetable, making it more tasty and juicy;
  • when using boron, the yield of carrots increases by 15-25%;
  • fruits processed in summer can be stored longer;
  • the solution protects the crop from diseases and pests;
  • treatment of plants increases their resistance to sudden changes in temperature.

Another advantage can be called the fact that boric acid is available everywhere. You can buy it in gardening stores and in regular pharmacies. The cost of this product is also pleasantly pleasing.

But this tool has its drawbacks:

  • improper use of boric solution can lead to burns on carrot leaves;
  • if you use this fertilizing agent too often, the shape of the greenery of the plant will begin to change;
  • excessive watering with boron solution can spoil the soil.

If you follow the instructions, maintain the correct proportions, and not feed the carrots more often than necessary, you will be fine.

How and with what can the fertilizer be diluted?

For the treatment of carrot beds, you can use different solutions based on boric acid.

Classical

To prepare a simple boric solution, the dry product must be diluted in hot water. In the cold, it simply does not dissolve. If boric acid crystals remain in the solution, they can further harm the delicate leaves.

You need to heat the water up to 50-55 degrees. In 1 liter of hot water, 1 teaspoon of boric acid is usually diluted. After the product has dissolved, the liquid must be allowed to cool. After 30-40 minutes, a liter of solution must be diluted in 10 liters of warm water.

With this solution, carrots can be sprayed or watered. Both methods are suitable for treating plants at different stages of growth. 1 square meter of planting usually takes 10 liters of solution.

With potassium permanganate

Potassium permanganate is very often used together with boric acid. It protects carrots from fungal diseases and disinfects them. Also, this product helps to save plants from one of the most dangerous pests for this root crop - the carrot fly.

Preparing a solution with boric acid and potassium permanganate is very simple. First you need to warm up 10 liters of water to 50-60 degrees. After that, you need to add 4-5 grams of potassium permanganate and the same amount of dry boric acid. Stir everything well and leave for 10-20 minutes. Once the solution has cooled, it can be used to process the carrots.

With ammonia

A solution of boric acid with ammonia not only helps nourish plants, but also protects them from various pests. To prepare it in a bucket of water, you need to dilute 1 teaspoon of iodine, 2 tablespoons of ammonia and half a spoon of boric acid. There you need to add fir oil or any aromatic oil with a strong smell and 2 tablespoons of birch tar. Before use, a glass of the finished solution must be diluted in a bucket of water and sprayed on the beds. This concentration of the solution will not harm the carrots in any way. Plants can be processed in this way at any time.

When using ammonia, you should always follow safety rules. It must be bred in the open air. Do not allow the drug to come into contact with the skin or eyes. To prevent this from happening, you need to wear gloves and goggles before work.

How to handle correctly?

It is best to fertilize plants with boron solution from July to August. It is during this period that carrots begin to ripen actively, which means that they need additional feeding. After fertilizing with boric acid, it will become sweet, juicy and bright. But in the first weeks after the emergence of young shoots, there will not be much benefit from fertilization.

Also, such a top dressing should be used if there are signs that the plant does not have enough boron. This can be determined by its appearance:

  • leaves and stems become lethargic and pale, and over time they begin to curl and dry out;
  • not only old, but also young foliage falls off;
  • carrots slow down their growth.

It is best to water plants with such a solution in the evening, in dry and calm weather. If it's cool outside, you can apply fertilizer during the day. It must be poured directly at the root. Before applying such fertilizer, the carrots must be watered very well. If you apply the nutrient solution to dry soil, you can burn the delicate roots of the plants. When processing plants that grow in the open field, you need to make sure that there will be no rain in the next day.

Foliar dressing is also often used by gardeners. It allows carrots to absorb all the nutrients as quickly as possible. When spraying plants, you should try to get the liquid on all the leaves. If the substance is sprayed unevenly, the effect of the treatment will be reduced. It is also important to ensure that too many drops of solution do not accumulate on the leaves. Otherwise, after sunrise, burns will appear in these places.

You can feed carrots growing in the open field with boric acid only twice during the entire season. An excess of boron in the soil can provoke a burn of the lower leaves, their yellowing, dying off and falling off. With good care, boric acid feeding will significantly increase the carrot yield. Therefore, such a simple and affordable tool is worth paying attention to both experienced gardeners and beginners.
