The floor-standing toilet is a versatile design characterized by reliability and ease of installation. She is well known to many who grew up in the Soviet Union. However, today floor standing devices delight with a large variety of shapes, designs and a rich set of options.

Peculiarities

The design of the floor-standing toilet is simple. It consists of a bowl, which is fixed to the floor, and a cistern. The toilet tank is connected to the cold water supply pipe through a hose, and the bowl outlet is connected to the sewer.

A kind of floor construction is the so-called "Genoa bowl"floor-mounted and assumes a squatting position when using the toilet. This design is also called "Turkish toilet" and is usually used in public places.

Inside the tank there is a drain mechanism and a water supply system equipped with a float. After the drain button is pressed, the valve opens and the bowl is filled with water. As soon as the required volume of water is collected, the valve is closed.

Designs and shapes

The design of the toilet depends on the outlet angle, which, in turn, depends on the location of the sewer pipe.

Thus, devices are distinguished:

  • with a horizontal outlet (the sewer pipe is in the floor or wall);
  • with a vertical outlet (another name is "outlet to the floor", when the sewer pipe goes into the floor);
  • with an oblique outlet (suitable for systems where the sewage system is located at the very bottom of the wall, close to the floor).

When buying a toilet, you should select the outlet angle for a specific type of sewage system. But there are more expensive universal devices, using which, you can neglect this rule. A cheaper option is to adapt the unsuitable toilet bowl to the existing sewage system using a corrugated pipe. However, this method is more laborious and takes up free space in the room.

Differences also apply to the drain tank, which can be mounted both on the toilet itself and installed above it. The toilet bowl and the tank installed on it form a monoblock, characterized by the most simple installation. It is also possible to place the tank on the wall above the toilet. The connection of structural elements is carried out by a pipe. The height of the tank can be different.

There are versions of floor-standing toilets, the installation of which is similar to the installation of hinged counterparts. Their tank is mounted on a wall-mounted installation, after which the entire structure is decorated with a false panel. The user sees only the toilet bowl and the flush button in the toilet.

Wall-mounted structures may not have a cistern at all, while the flush system is connected directly to the cold water pipes. Such devices are often seen in public buildings.

The peculiarities of water supply to the tank do not in any way affect the design and shape of the toilet bowl, however, the quiet operation of the tank depends on it. Water can enter the tank from the side or from the bottom. In the first case, the device is easily mounted, but when you draw water, you can clearly hear it. Tanks with a bottom water supply are distinguished by a more complex installation, but water is drawn in them silently.

The shape of the toilet bowl also affects the design features.

Floor standing devices can have the following types of bowls:

  • Funnel-shaped. The drain hole in such a toilet is located in the center, which provides a good flush, but can cause splashes.
  • Poppet. Equipped with a shelf that retains water. This prevents splashing. However, together, it may sometimes be necessary to re-flush when using similar designs.
  • Visor. The drain hole is inclined from the center, the surface of the bowl is at an angle, has a small protrusion. Thanks to this design, the bowl always stays clean, no splashes of water are formed during use.

The drain device is also of 2 types:

  • in the form of a lever, when pressed, all the water from the tank is drained;
  • in the form of a button.

Push-button models, in turn, also come in several types. Toilets deserve attention, in which double flushing is possible. They have a double drain button. When you press one half of it, the toilet drains 1/3 or 1/2 of the volume of the tank, when you press the second part, all the water from the tank. This system allows you to efficiently use water.

As for the shape of the toilet bowl, an elongated, oval or round shape is considered universal. However, today manufacturers offer original square and rectangular options that look harmonious in minimalist interiors and high-tech style.

It is better if the structure has rounded corners, which will avoid injuries during its operation. Connoisseurs of everything unusual will like egg-shaped toilets.

By the size of the bowl, toilet bowls are distinguished: small (up to 54 cm long), compact (54 cm long) and large (more than 54 cm long). Width and depth depend on length indicators. The choice of a suitable model should be based on the characteristics of the physique and weight of the users and the area of the toilet.

As for the height, the toilet is considered optimal, the top point of which is located at a height of 40-45 cm from the floor. However, there are also short versions that are especially convenient for childcare or families with a child. A shortened model can also be obtained by attaching a slight rise or step to the device. For the elderly, patients during the recovery period after surgery, as well as people with disabilities, the recommended height of the floor-standing toilet is 50-60 cm.

The design of the toilet bowl may vary depending on the availability of additional options. The most popular modifications are a built-in bidet, hairdryer, heated seat and lighting. Toilets with a microlift seat are very convenient, thanks to which the lid of the device lowers smoothly and quietly.

The modern modification of the floor-standing toilet is a device without a rim. In such models, the function of the rim is performed by a water divider, which distributes water in three directions, which avoids splashing when draining.

A clear advantage of rimless devices is improved hygiene and easier maintenance.

Colors and designs

The classic of the genre is a white floor-standing toilet. It has the main advantage - the ability to fit into any interior. However, this adherence to tradition can seem boring, because today manufacturers offer many options for devices. Due to the variety of styles and designs, you can find a toilet for both classic interior and high-tech style.

Colored toilets can have both calm, mostly pastel shades, and rather bright body tones. They, of course, become the accent of the bathroom, and therefore too bright elements and accessories should not be in the neighborhood.

A colored toilet bowl looks good in combined bathrooms, since it can also serve for zoning a room.

Connoisseurs of luxury and respectability should pay attention to gilded toilets, as well as models in black. However, nothing prevents you from combining black and gold shades.

Classic models don't have to be white - it is permissible to preserve the usual shape of the monoblock and combine it with pastel, blue, green shades. An interesting option is to use a decorative cover, reminiscent of the upholstery in traditional living rooms.

Retro toilets are usually rounded and have a wall-mounted cistern. They are distinguished by an elegant design, ideally a faience bowl. It is better to choose a seat made of wood.

Manufacturing materials

Many materials are used to make plumbing.

The toilet is usually made from the following types of raw materials:

  • Most modern toilets have ceramic chamotte bowls. They are based on refractory clay and kaolin, which provide the strength of the material.
  • Ceramic toilets come in porcelain and earthenware. At first glance, these materials are similar. However, faience has a thinner coating, which cracks after a while. This means that the water absorption rates of the bowl decrease, and it begins to deteriorate. The service life of faience sanitary ware is no more than 10-15 years.
  • Porcelain is more expensive (by about 50%), but it also lasts up to 30 years. Its surface does not crack, which means that it retains high water resistance and an attractive appearance of the toilet bowl throughout its entire service life.
  • Another popular toilet model is a product with a stainless steel bowl. This design is distinguished by increased strength characteristics, resistance to mechanical damage, moisture and cleaning components. No dirt lingers on its smooth surface. Due to their increased reliability, such devices are often used in industrial toilets.
  • Metal toilets can also be made of steel and plastic. As a rule, they are mounted in public places, with steel models being preferred. Cast iron options are heavy, have a short-lived coating and are not reliable, although they are inexpensive.
  • Today, manufacturers also offer glass and plastic materials. Glass models, despite the originality of their appearance, are not in great demand. This is probably due to the unattractiveness of the device with transparent walls.
  • Plastic models are a budget option that does not have a large margin of safety, in addition, they absorb odors. The structure can only be used in rooms with heating, otherwise cracking of the material cannot be avoided. Toilet bowls with a plastic bowl are used in dachas and villages.
  • It is worth highlighting the more expensive models, which are usually made to order. This is a toilet bowl made of natural or artificial stone. It is distinguished by its noble appearance and originality. Such a toilet is easy to use - it can withstand a lot of weight, has a long service life, and practically no dirt is formed on its slippery surface.

Manufacturers rating

How to choose?

  • Before choosing a toilet model, find out which outlet should have a suitable device for you. Of course, you can get a universal model, but it won't be cheap. You can use a corrugated pipe, but then you need to be prepared for additional manipulations during installation and take more toilet space under the toilet.
  • Next, you should decide on the optimal size of the toilet. It is believed that after its installation, at least 25-30 cm should remain on the sides of the device, and 60 cm to the opposite wall or door. In combined bathrooms of a small area, it makes sense to consider the option of a corner toilet.
  • If you want the toilet to be inaudible, choose the more expensive model with a bottom water supply tank or a raised wall design. The latter will hide the tank and all communications.
  • In houses where water meters are installed, it makes sense to take care of its economical consumption and purchase a toilet with a double flush button.
  • Every user is interested in the cleanliness and hygiene of the bowl, therefore, when buying, you should pay attention to the type of drain. The simplest is the direct drain, well known to everyone from the devices of the Soviet period. The drain in such toilets is powerful enough (and therefore noisy), the ode moves along a straight path. As a result, only half, and sometimes even a smaller part of the bowl is washed.
  • It is much more rational to use devices with a circular flush. In the upper part, along the entire perimeter of the bowl of such a toilet, there are small holes from where the water comes from. The entire toilet bowl is washed.
  • When choosing, carefully inspect the holes, they must be ceramic. If you notice the plastic inserts - this is nothing more than an imitation of a circular flush, the expected effect cannot be achieved when using the device. Toilets with ceramic perimeter holes cannot be cheap.
  • You can reduce water consumption, make it soft, foaming, using an aerator. This device is mounted in a tank and promotes mixing of water with air bubbles. As a result, the water flow becomes intense, but less water is consumed. In addition, oxygen-enriched water contains less chlorine, foams better and cleans the surface better.
  • Finally, evaluate the shape and appearance of the toilet. It should harmoniously fit into the interior of the toilet.

Installation tips

When installing a toilet, it is important to follow a certain algorithm of actions.

  • Installation work can be started only after the water is shut off. First of all, the old device is dismantled. Previously, water is completely drained from its tank. If the toilet has been installed for a long time, and its bolts are rusted, you can pour kerosene or turpentine over them, wait 2-3 minutes, and then unscrew.
  • Old toilet bowls were usually glued to the floor with cement. You will have to repulse the device with a hammer and chisel. The same steps will have to be repeated to disconnect the outlet from the pipe.
  • It is recommended to clean the sewer pipe immediately after installing the old toilet and temporarily close it with a plug.
  • The installation of a new device can only be carried out on a flat and clean surface. If necessary, repair the floor covering. If it is not possible to completely level the floor, you should use chopiks on the floor level.
  • If you purchased a disassembled toilet (this usually happens), it must be assembled following the instructions in the instructions.
  • Further, markings are made on the floor and stitches with the obligatory indication of the location of the fasteners. At these points, holes are punched with a perforator into which plugs are inserted. You should also connect the drain and the toilet outlet. The use of a flexible corrugation greatly facilitates this process: one end of it is inserted into the pipe, the other is fixed at the outlet. Everything is carefully sealed.
  • The toilet itself is attached to the floor - the holes made by the perforator are combined with the perforations on the toilet leg. Connect the floor and toilet with bolts with rubber gaskets and close them with decorative plugs.
  • It remains only to connect the water using a metal-plastic pipe or flexible hose. The joints are wrapped with a sealing rubber and tightened.
  • At the junction of the bowl and the floor, as well as the bowl and the sewer, it is recommended to apply a layer of sealant, using special silicone-based compounds for this. After it is completely dry, you should drain the water several times, carefully examining the device. If all joints are securely sealed, it remains to attach the seat and the toilet will be ready for use.
