Dry closets-toilet bowls for a summer residence: what is and how to choose?
A mandatory building for a summer residence is a toilet, regardless of whether a land plot was purchased for gardening, as a place of rest from the bustle of the city or the construction of a bath. Often there is no such pleasure as sewerage in summer cottages. This means that you have to make do with a "wooden house". An excellent solution to this problem will be a dry closet, a toilet.

A distinctive feature of dry closets is the fact that no communications need to be connected to them. For a country toilet, you often need to dig a cesspool. Buying a dry closet completely relieves you of such responsibilities. Biunitase is a small device with compact dimensions and weight.
It completely neutralizes waste odors. Regardless of the type, each of them has 2 cameras. The upper one is used as a toilet. At the bottom, waste is collected and processed.
Biological toilets can be classified according to their size and principle of operation. The former fall into two categories.
- Mobile. Compact portable devices ideal for country toilet conditions.
- Stationary. Large bulky boxes often found near markets and beaches. Of course, you can choose this option for a summer residence, only you will have to install it on the street.
According to the principle of operation, there are three types of dry closets:
- chemical;
- electrical;
- peat.
Let's take a quick look at each type.
Chemical
Chemical or liquid options for disposal use a special liquid that is added to the water. They are considered the most mobile and compact types of dry closets. There are two most popular sizes of these toilets: 32 x 38 x 31 and 45 x 45 x 42 cm.
Liquid dry closets are convenient because they are completely hygienic and neutralize all odors. This means they can be installed in any room.
In addition to two chambers, a dry closet device requires a water tank and a drain pump. In the lower chamber, thanks to the composition of special liquids, waste is recycled. Odors are also neutralized there.
Usually such models have a fill indicator, by the red color of which you can tell that it is time to empty the camera.
Liquids for such dry closets are divided into several types:
- Ammonium. These are the most popular options. They decompose quickly, waste from the lower chamber is safe for plants, and can even be added to compost.
- Formaldehyde. These are the fastest liquids in terms of the decomposition process. However, they are toxic; it is not recommended to pour them into the ground. This is bad for a summer residence, since such compositions must be disposed of in the central sewer.
- Biological. These are products based on live bacteria. They do not pose a threat to humans and plants. Bacteria are capable of converting waste products into fertilizers. The big advantage of such compositions is antiseptic. They are able to disinfect water and destroy disease-causing organisms.
In addition to the above liquids in biounitases of this type, I also use disinfecting and odor-neutralizing liquids. A chemical toilet with a volume of 10-12 liters will be completely filled by a family of three in about four days. It can weigh up to 15 kg.
Electrical
This is a new but already very popular trend. For their operation, you need electricity with a voltage of 220V, as well as a socket with grounding.The rooms where they will be installed must have forced ventilation. The way the waste is disposed of is to blame.
When used, an electric toilet separates waste into solid and liquid, distributes them to different cameras. Subsequently, they are burned in a sealed chamber or dried, sprinkled with disinfectant powder. Regardless of the way of disposal, the final product will take up little space and be light in weight. It can be used as fertilizer.
Such dry closets require uninterrupted electricity, they are the most expensive.
Peat
This is the best alternative to conventional country toilets and toilets. At their expense, not only waste is disposed of, but also fertilizer for the garden and vegetable garden appears. Unlike previous options, peat toilets do not need water at all to operate. It is replaced by peat, which is poured into the toilet, you just have to turn the dispenser knob.
These dry closets have two disadvantages. Peat is not completely capable of eliminating unpleasant odors. To install such a dry closet, you need to drain fluids. It is quite simple to purchase filler for such a toilet.
Peat must be dry when used.
Reviews
Reviews of dry closets are mostly positive. Disgruntled buyers are rare. Most consumers buy liquid dry closets. They note the comfort and ease of use even for the elderly, as well as the ability to install the product in any convenient place.
