How to start a petrol trimmer?
How to start the trimmer correctly is a question that the owners are puzzled with in the event of a device breakdown. And after a successful trimmer repair, the owner tries to avoid repeating the same situation.
Prerequisites
The reason the trimmer fails is may be:
- overflow of the tank;
- excessive pumping of fuel into engines equipped with a manual supercharger;
- wear in the motor of valves, cylinders, injectors, cam followers and other moving parts;
- the tanks are out of gasoline and / or oil;
- the spark plug is out of order;
- clogged fuel or air filters;
- the valves in the motor are out of alignment or burnt.
The check begins with the presence of oil and fuel both in the tanks and a small portion of it in the engine system. An “empty” engine will not start, despite a full tank, as well as an overfilled one.
How to start a trimmer or petrol cutter motor?
The new trimmer is simple during commissioning.
- Check the motor type of the device. Trimmers are equipped with a 2- or 4-stroke motor.
- Buy oil for this type of motor. Gasoline for trimmer - AI-92/93/98, sold at all gas stations.
- Mix oil with gasoline. Mineral oil is mixed in a ratio of 1: 34 with gasoline, synthetics - in a 1: 50 ratio. Follow the trimmer manufacturer's recommendations for oil viscosity (see the label on the flask). The most commonly used multigrade oil 5W-30. Do not use untested car oils.
- Pour a small amount (for example 0.5 liters) of the resulting fuel into the tank.
- Close the air damper by sliding the desired lever (see instructions).
- Turn the ignition key (or handle) to the "on" position - otherwise the trimmer will not start. Beginners often make this mistake.
- Pump some fuel into the carburetor - if there is a manual "rocker" with a separate button or lever (see instructions). It takes 4-7 clicks.
- Place the trimmer on a level surface.
- Pull on the starter cord gently until you feel it slow down. Then pull it out sharply, but not completely. Repeat this movement up to 4 more times.
- If the engine does not start, open the air damper again, otherwise the candles will flood with gasoline with further movements of the cord. Perform 2-3 attempts to start the engine with the handbrake open.
- If the engine still does not start, close the choke and make a few more attempts to start it.
- After starting the engine, press the throttle lever to idle.
Let the motor warm up - 5-10 minutes is enough. Do not start mowing immediately after a cold start - the trimmer motor should run in.
Starting the brushcutter for the first time or after a long period of inactivity
A brushcutter differs from a trimmer in that it is not a fishing line that acts as a grass cutter, but a mechanical reducer or a gear-based winch equipped with a knife. The knife drive is much more powerful than the forestry mechanism - a powerful petrol cutter is also used when cutting bushes. Both Chinese and European petrol cutters are no different when the declared power is real.
To lubricate the gears of the reducer, lithol or grease is used. After checking the gearbox, prepare the motor itself for work - according to the above instructions. If the start fails, the problem is already in the engine.
Adding fuel through the spark plug holes
If the trimmer engine does not have manual pumping and the device does not start, add some fuel to the engine itself through the spark plugs. Do the following.
- Check if the fuel level in the tank is sufficient to drain a small amount. It only takes 20 ml.
- Remove the spark plug cap and unscrew it with a spark plug wrench.
- If the spark plug is dirty on a used trimmer, rinse and ignite it. There should be no deposits on the spark plug electrodes. Do not damage the center conductor ceramic insulator. In a new trimmer, check the spark plugs for a manufacturing defect.
- Put the spark plug back and check the spark ignition (discharge between the electrodes) when the starter is triggered.
- Remove the candle again. Using a 20 or 50 cc syringe, pour 20 ml of gasoline into the plug hole.
- Insert and fix the spark plug, setting the size of its technological gap at least and no more than a millimeter.
- Prime fuel using the priming button (or lever) - if your trimmer model has one. Press the button every 4 seconds.
Now try to start the engine. Close the air damper immediately after starting.
Checking the ignition system
If the trimmer has already been used, then check the serviceability of the removed (at the moment) spark plug by swapping it with any other. If, when inspecting a candle, for example, a ceramic dielectric crumbled, electrodes bent, buy exactly the same one, guided by the product code stamped on the part itself and checking it with a marker in the trimmer's instruction manual. A spark plug without an insulator and / or with bent electrodes will not produce normal sparks when triggered.
If the spark plugs are in order, but spark ignition of fuel is not observed, check the ignition coil with an ohmmeter (multimeter). Lack of readings (infinite resistance) is a sign of a broken winding. If it is sintered due to overheating due to turn-to-turn closure, there will not be enough voltage for spark breakdown.
Since a very thin wire is used for it, due to which it converts 12.6 volts from the battery to 30,000, it is very difficult to fix it (rewind) even in garage conditions. Coil replacement will be required.
Cleaning the engine
If a used trimmer does not start, and the suspicion falls on a dirty engine, it will need to be cleaned before starting. To clean the carburetor using a special solvent, do the following.
- Remove plastic caps and air filter.
- After gaining access to the carburetor, remove and disassemble it.
- Spray solvent jet into the main jet or other process ports on the engine (flush through). Make sure there is nothing foreign on the motor.
- Reassemble the entire system in reverse order. Prepare the required fuel mixture (if the engine is 2-stroke) or pour the appropriate oil and gasoline into each of the tanks (if the engine is 4-stroke).
- Repeat the steps to start the engine from the previous instructions.
If the start-up fails, a complete disassembly of the carburetor, valve adjustment, piston inspection, and full cleaning of the nozzles will be required. The staging of this process varies depending on the type of motor.
Checking the integrity of the spark arrester
A non-starting trimmer is a consequence not only of problems with the combustible starter and the engine itself, but also of a clogged exhaust system. The spark arrestor mesh must allow the exhaust gases to pass freely. It is located in the muffler. Its purpose is to prevent the escape of incandescent sparks to the outside. Otherwise, getting on flammable materials, for example, the same gasoline, these sparks can ignite them. If there is carbon deposits on it, the muffler must be disassembled, and the mesh itself must be cleaned with a metal brush.
Unstable carburetor operation
Motor behavior during erratic operation manifests itself in one of the following ways:
- short-term operation of the engine, in general - the start is unsuccessful;
- the motor starts and runs - but after one or several minutes of operation it stalls.
Causes:
- insufficient fuel pumping or its absence;
- incorrect dosage of gasoline and oil (for trimmers with a 4-stroke engine);
- you have prepared the wrong mixture yourself (for 2-stroke engines);
- you knocked out the factory setting with the adjusting screws on the carburetor.
"Treatment" of the unit from this problem is replacing a worn out carburetor or cleaning its parts from carbon deposits and resins. After flushing, readjustment of the valve train is often required. Here you will already need special keys and probes to set the normal valve clearance. If the cause of the breakdown is still not in the engine, diagnose the ignition system. Then start the engine without departing a step from the instructions above.
There are times when even a complete cleaning and iteration of the engine do not give a result. The engine will still stall, no matter what you do. The reason is a violation of the fuel supply adjustment using one of the screws on the carburetor. The engine does not receive the necessary portions of gasoline - and periodically stalls. If you unscrew this screw in the opposite direction, the engine will smoke with unburned gasoline and soot, and the smell of burning will be off scale. In this case, contact a motorcycle repair service center.
The second screw that controls idle is not critical. You can tweak the idle parameters as you wish.
Draining fuel from the gas tank
Gasoline, diluted with oil for two-stroke engines, is designed in such a way that during long-term storage, its heavier fractions sink to the bottom, and the lighter ones float up. Gasoline, in which there is too much oil - in this case, a thin layer (from the entire volume of fuel), which has sunk to the very bottom. The fuel line, communicating with the bottom of the tank, first sucks it in - by the efforts of the fuel pumping system on the engine itself. Accordingly, the engine, consuming this "oiled" portion of gasoline, cokes its valves, channels and pistons during combustion. The situation is not saved by the next portion of gasoline, in which there is almost no oil at all: coal and tar can no longer be washed off without the help of a solvent. Pistons and valves operate at a much higher load than intended - which is why they fail prematurely. If the contamination of the parts is too great, the trimmer simply will not start.
In engines with increased structural complexity, they resort to ultrasonic cleaning performed in a technical center (car service center).
After the end of the session on the gas trimmer with a two-stroke engine, drain the remaining gasoline from the tank. After the brushcutter or trimmer has been taken out, for example, after winter, the fuel is shaken and poured into the tank. They store such gasoline in stainless steel cans, and do not keep it all the time in the tank of the device. If you work on a trimmer every day when you go to order, you do not need to drain the gas at the end of the working day.
