Japanese crab is an unusual variety of Siberian tomatoes grown by Russian summer residents since 2007. This lettuce tomato is prized for its high immunity to diseases, amicable and abundant fruiting. The variety is well adapted to growing in most climatic zones of the Russian Federation.

Description of the variety

The tomato is medium-sized, indeterminate, with stems up to 200 cm high. The bush is powerful, with medium-sized light green leaves. On the main stem, up to 5 fruit clusters are formed, the inflorescences are simple. Their formation continues throughout the growing season, without stopping.

The main qualities of the fruit

Tomatoes of the Japanese crab variety are large in size, the average weight of the fruit is 250-350 g, some specimens can reach 800 g. The shade of the peel of a ripe tomato is pink, unripe tomatoes are green, with a slight darkening at the stalk. The shape is medium-silvery, flat-round, but can be modified depending on the growing conditions. The skin is quite dense, not prone to cracking.

Taste characteristics

The tomato is very sweet, with a slight slight sourness. Juicy, loose pulp is delicious fresh and in salads. Fruits are also suitable for processing into juices, sauces. The taste and aroma of such products is rich, the consistency is thick.

Ripening and fruiting

Tomato Japanese crab is distinguished by long-term fruiting, harvesting is carried out from July to September. The variety is mid-season, the fruits ripen in 110-115 days. In heated greenhouses, tomatoes can be produced on a year-round basis.

Yield

The variety is considered to be high yielding. Subject to agricultural technology in greenhouses, the yield of fruits reaches 11 kg / sq. m.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

The cultivation of this variety of tomatoes is usually carried out in seedlings. Seeds, previously soaked in a solution of manganese, treated with stimulating compounds, are placed in common containers from March 1 to March 15. Transfer to greenhouses and soil is carried out no earlier than May 15, if return frosts have passed. In other cases, planting is postponed to early June.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

Tomato bushes are arranged according to the scheme 60 × 50 cm.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and care

The variety needs to be formed into 2 stems. Pinning must be performed, the garter is also carried out starting from the moment the bushes are transferred to the ground or to the greenhouse. If the seedlings are strongly stretched, they are also attached to the support peg.It is not recommended to delay the transfer to greenhouses, it is better to carry out work in early May.

With sufficient looseness, soil fertility, serious preparation for the subsequent use of tomatoes is not required. You can only lay wood ash and compost directly into the holes prepared according to the scheme. The same combination can be used for feeding at the stage of fruit ripening. Bushes grow well on solutions from dandelion, mullein. In extreme heat, the ovaries are weakly formed; additional stimulation with special preparations, combined with the ventilation of the greenhouses, may be required.

It is better to regulate the fruiting process so that the fruits are large. To do this, no more than half is left on a flower brush of 10 ovaries, the rest are pinched. The main shoot is pinched 30-40 days before the end of the fruiting period. The stepchildren break off evenly, constantly, manually. The lower leaves under the flower brush are also removed, but no more than 3 at a time.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when there is no rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

The variety is not affected by apical fruit rot, TMV. Prophylactic treatment for these diseases can be dispensed with. During periods of prolonged rains, with prolonged cold snap, it is imperative to take care of the prevention of late blight. Plants are sprayed with copper-based preparations, as well as special antifungal agents. In extreme heat, with an increase in air humidity, tomato bushes may need protection against cladosporia.

Among the effective measures for the prevention of diseases in this case, it is possible to recommend spraying with "Trichopolom", as well as dusting the shoots with wood ash. It is better to set traps against insects; if caterpillars or spider mites are detected, insecticidal treatment is performed.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.

Resistant to adverse weather conditions

The tomato was originally developed for the harsh Siberian climate. He is not afraid of growing in extreme weather conditions. It tolerates sharp temperature changes, forms ovaries, regardless of the number of sunny days, the level of atmospheric humidity.

Growing regions

The variety has successfully passed the tests, is grown in the North Caucasus and the Volga region, in Western and Eastern Siberia, in the Far East and North-West. In the southern regions, it can be grown without shelter, with sowing directly into the ground.

Review overview

Japanese crab is still exotic for many gardeners, while, according to the experience of summer residents who have already planted this tomato, it is definitely worth it. Bright salad taste, huge fruit sizes, successful ripening right on the branches - this is only a small part of the variety's advantages. It is indicated that the seeds sprout together, respond well to top dressing and regular watering.

Especially amateur vegetable growers note the resistance of bushes to various types of rot, as well as to late blight - tomatoes did not hurt them even when other plants were damaged in the greenhouse. The bushes of the plant are very strong, grow well, but they need a lot of space, it is worth thickening the planting only as a last resort. Summer residents point out that even at the stage of ovary formation, this variety cannot be confused with others, and ripe tomatoes look even impressive, fleshy, the flesh on the break is sugar.

Studying the reviews, you can see that the Japanese crab variety does not leave a negative opinion about itself. It is not only re-planted, but also recommended to other summer residents. The geography of distribution of this tomato is also extensive. In the open field, you can get fruits even in the climate of the Moscow region, if the beds are properly prepared in advance. The only negative mention is related to seed mis-grading, but it is detected only in a few suppliers.
