The Japanese dwarf is an original variety, the owner of miniature bushes and giant spherical fruits compared to the bush. The combination is spectacular.
Description of the variety
Bushes are compact, determinate type, up to 50 cm tall. Sometimes the height does not exceed 30 cm. The foliage is rather large and dense. The first inflorescence is laid above 6-7 leaves. The internodes are very short, the inflorescences are located close to each other, during the fruiting period the bush looks very densely packed with large fruits. The purpose is universal, suitable for growing in greenhouses, in the open field, on balconies and window sills.
The main qualities of the fruit
The fruits are quite large for such a miniature variety, 60-70 g each, individual fruits can reach 100 g (for comparison, cherry tomatoes weigh 15-40 g each). Fruits are rounded, bright red signal color, collected in clusters of 3-5 pcs. The pulp is red, with 4 small seed chambers, solid, dense, shiny. The walls are not thick, but the tomato is strong. It is not typical for the variety to form white patches near the stalk. The skin is elastic and shiny.
Taste characteristics
The taste is good for an early variety - rich, sweet, with moderate sourness. Due to its ultra-fast fruiting, the tomato is consumed raw, but it is perfect for any dishes and preparations. Keeps its shape well in salting.
Ripening and fruiting
The variety is ultra-early, with proper formation, the crop is harvested at the end of June-beginning of July, 85-95 days after germination.
Yield
Up to 2 kg of tomatoes are obtained from 1 bush, from 1 sq. m can be removed in 12-18 kg. These are huge numbers for any variety. Whether the Japanese dwarf will bring so much depends on agricultural technology.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
Sowing seedlings is carried out no earlier than the end of March. In open ground, seedlings are planted at the age of 60 days. For most regions of Russia, this is mid to late May; in Siberia and the Urals, tomatoes are placed in a permanent place in the first week of June. Since the plant is super early, you can grow it in a seedless way - the seeds are sown in greenhouses in open ground. The plant is a variety, not a hybrid, so you can sow your own seeds next year.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
A minimum distance of 20 cm can be maintained between plants, per 1 sq. m are planted in 6-9 plants. There is no need to be afraid of excessive density, the plant almost does not grow to the sides.
Growing and caring
Low-growing varieties are rarely chosen for growing in greenhouses, which can use verticals to the roof, but for window sills, varieties such as the Japanese dwarf are ideal. The variety, thanks to its large fruits and yield, is also very good for open ground. Especially in windy, shaded areas with unstable weather.
Stepson and garter are optional. The plant is not inclined to actively grow stepchildren, even if they appear, they grow for a long time and slowly, without interfering in any way with tying fruits to one stem. However, with formation, the harvest will be earlier and more abundant.
All tomatoes love the sun, especially during the ripening period, but the Japanese dwarf is a welcome exception. It can grow in light partial shade without loss of productivity. Therefore, it shows itself well on balconies or windows, where the lighting is in any case weaker than in open ground (glass can absorb 6-30% of the light, depending on their purity).
To make tomatoes have a sweeter taste, they are fed with mineral fertilizers containing potassium and calcium. For taste, even abundant watering, very capacious, loose, nutritious soil, 1-2 sprays with 1% boric acid solution, good lighting are also useful.
The plant almost does not get sick, like almost all early varieties, which manage to do everything for which they were created, before the spread of fungal and bacterial infections. Different sources describe the resistance to diseases of the Japanese dwarf differently. There are reviews of its excellent stability, even in the autumn, the tomato does not get sick. Just in case, watering with Fitosporin solution (once a month) will not interfere.
The usual procedures for other tomatoes - shaking the brushes for better tying and breaking off the foliage - are not needed for the tomato. Although in the open field during the ripening period, the leaves can be partially torn off.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Review overview
There are few reviews, the variety is quite rare. It is not produced by large agricultural firms; you cannot find bags of seeds in every supermarket. It attracts attention, indeed, by the large fruits for such a kid, the absence of whims and the very early return of the harvest. Average taste, not the best, but very good for an early tomato. The variety will be of interest to those who are looking for an atypical variety for a balcony or window, hardy, productive. And also for those who are ready to try new agricultural techniques. The kid will show itself with a good planting density.
