Summer residents and farmers who grow tomatoes in cool and short summers always choose varieties that quickly adapt to climatic conditions. Early maturing species are especially in demand. These are the early ripening tomato Turbojet.
Breeding history
The turbo-active tomato is a novelty developed by a group of Novosibirsk breeders of the Siberian Garden agricultural firm. The culture has not yet been included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation, but it is very popular among vegetable growers. It is recommended for cultivation of the nightshade crop in regions with a harsh climate. The variety showed itself as productive as possible, growing in unprotected soils, as well as on the windowsill in the apartment.
Description of the variety
The turbojet tomato is a low-growing plant of the determinant type. The standard bush grows up to 40 cm in height. The plant is characterized by compactness, a powerful stem, weak thickening of dark green leaves, a strong root system and simple inflorescences.
The plant is so unpretentious in its care that it does not require the formation of bushes, pinching and thinning of foliage. The only thing that is recommended, despite the power of the stem, is a garter to the support, otherwise, under the weight of a huge number of berries, the branches may break off. The purpose of the tomato is universal, so the vegetable is eaten fresh, processed, canned, and widely used in cooking. In addition, tomatoes are ideal for whole fruit canning.
The main qualities of the fruit
An early ripe tomato belongs to the medium-fruit group. The average weight of a vegetable is about 89 grams. The berries have a classic flat-round shape and a deep red color when ripe. Slight ribbing is sometimes observed at the base. At the ripening stage, the vegetable has a light green color with darkening at the stalk. The peel of the vegetable is dense, without stiffness, smooth and shiny. It is the peel that gives the tomato its resistance to cracking, even when cooked.
The vegetable tolerates transportation well, and its keeping quality is short, therefore it is recommended to immediately preserve or process ripe tomatoes.
Taste characteristics
The tomato vegetable is endowed with classic taste and aroma. The flesh of the berry is dense, very fleshy and juicy. There are many seeds in the pulp, but they are small and practically not felt when the vegetable is eaten. The taste is dominated by the sourness traditional for tomatoes, complemented by pleasant sweetness and a pronounced spicy aroma. The balance of sweetness and sourness directly depends on weather conditions - the sun gives sugariness to a tomato, and rains give sourness.
Ripening and fruiting
The tomato belongs to the ultra-early. From the moment of mass germination of sprouts to ripe berries on the bushes, only 70-75 days pass, which indicates an incredibly fast ripening. The fruiting period is extended. Tomatoes spice on the bushes together, so they are removed almost simultaneously. The first fruits can be tasted from mid-June, and the peak of fruiting occurs in early July - September.
Yield
The crop yields are high. With standard agricultural technology, at the request of the tomato producer, 2 kg of tomatoes can be harvested per 1 m2. In practice, yields are higher - up to 2 kg from each bush.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
It is convenient to grow tomatoes using the seedling method. Seeds are sown 60-70 days before transplanting to the garden. The best period is the second half of March. Before sowing, it is recommended that the seeds be carefully sorted out, disinfected, germinated a little and treated with growth stimulants. Mass germination occurs on the 5-7th day. Experienced gardeners use the greenhouse effect for the speedy germination of seeds. Bushes grow well with good lighting and a temperature of 18-22 indoors. After the appearance of 2-3 leaves on the bush, a dive is carried out in separate cups. After 12-14 days, fertilizing with nitrogen-containing fertilizers begins. 2 weeks before planting on the garden, the bushes are hardened, taking them out daily for 20-40 minutes to fresh air.
You can plant seedlings in open ground in the second half of May, in the southern regions - at the end of April. The main thing is that the air is warmed up to +15 degrees, and the soil up to +10. It is recommended to transplant on a cool day so that the sun is not active.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
The density of the bushes in the garden, as well as the scheme, are very important when growing a crop. It is recommended to plant 3 to 5 plants per 1 m2. The correct scheme for landing is considered to be a 40x50 cm scheme.
Growing and caring
The variety is completely unpretentious to growing conditions - there is enough area with loose, fertile and breathable soil, located in a sunny place. More attention should be paid to care, which consists of a whole range of measures: irrigation with warm water, which is reduced at the time of fruit formation, the introduction of complex fertilizers, weeding and loosening of the soil, garters of bushes, if necessary, as well as protection from viruses and insects.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
The culture has good immunity, so it rarely suffers from typical nightshade diseases such as top rot, tobacco mosaic virus, and fusarium wilting. In addition, due to its early maturity, the tomato bypasses late blight. Preventive spraying with biological products can protect against the invasion of pests.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
The resistance to stress of this variety is one of its advantages. The tomato is adapted to extreme weather conditions, quite frost-hardy, and easily tolerates short-term droughts. The only thing that the plant sometimes reacts badly to is prolonged heat and scorching sun, from which the bush is not protected due to weak foliage. Drafts and gusty winds are undesirable for tomatoes.
Growing regions
The tomato was bred specifically for regions with risky farming and cool summers. The culture grows most productively in Siberia, in all northern regions.
Review overview
Despite the fact that the type of tomato is still new, it managed to win the attention of vegetable growers and summer residents, since it is characterized by ultra-early ripening times, resistance to bad climatic conditions and excellent taste. And also many are captivated by the versatility of the variety, which allows it to be widely used both in cooking and when preparing for the winter.
For cultivation on an industrial scale, the variety is not very suitable, since it cannot lie for a long time, retaining its taste and marketability. Among the disadvantages of the nightshade crop, one should single out a huge amount of seeds in the pulp, as well as high requirements for fertilizing and watering.
