Foreign breeding is most often chosen in order to diversify the crop. Over time, some varieties become very popular with domestic gardeners, while others are even specially grown for commercial purposes. Tomato Torbay is distinguished by its taste and yield. That is why he is so fond of many summer residents.

Breeding history

The culture belongs to the Dutch selection, the author was Bejo Zaden B. V. The year of approval for use is 2007. The Torbay variety is a determinant hybrid intended for cultivation in open and closed ground in any territory of Russia.

Description of the variety

Torbay tomato bushes have limited vigor. On average, the height of the stem in open ground is 80 cm, in film greenhouses - from 140 to 160 cm. You do not need to pinch the bushes, since growth stops on its own after the first large brushes are formed.

The stem is powerful. The hybrid is of the standard type. This means that you should not pinch the bush, but it is necessary to form and tie it up. Some gardeners leave only one trunk, cutting off all the side shoots. In this case, there is an intense growth in length, and the bushes can stretch up to two meters. Most form 1-2 stems.

The crown is spreading, with a lot of leaves. Abundant foliage is well suited for growing outdoors, because then all the leaves will cover the fruits from the scorching sun. In covered greenhouses, extra sheets must be removed, since a large number of useful elements are spent on their formation, and because of this, the ripening period of the fruits may shift.

The manufacturer claims good immunity, which protects the bush and fruits from a variety of fungal diseases. The culture resists well top and root rot, does not lend itself to late blight. But preventive spraying is recommended.

The inflorescence is simple, it is laid at the level of 5-6 leaves. The buds are light yellow. 4-6 fruits are formed on one hand. Peduncle with a section.

The advantages include the fact that the variety is large-fruited and with good yield indicators. The bushes tolerate strong sunshine and short drought well. And also unpretentious in care.

Among the minuses, it is noted that the bushes need to be tied up and shaped. Sometimes the fruits ripen in different sizes, and as the season ends, the vegetables become smaller.

The plant grows best in soft and loose soil. Therefore, it is necessary to frequently loosen the soil.

The main qualities of the fruit

The fruits are large, spherical or flat-round in shape with a slightly flattened top and a depressed peduncle. There is a slight ribbing along the vegetable from the stalk.

The weight of a tomato is 150-200 g. The first berries can be born in a weight of 250 g. But throughout the entire extended growing season, the tendency of crushing fruits prevails.

The rind is dense, which makes it possible to transport vegetables over long distances. The peel does not crack during processing, and fresh tomatoes are stored for up to one and a half months.

The color of the tomatoes is pink or rose-red. The pulp is firm, fleshy and very juicy. 4-5 chambers are formed inside. Since it is a hybrid, its seeds are very small, few and empty. Dry matter in pulp is less than 6%.

The culture is universal, therefore it is suitable both for fresh consumption and for canning.

Taste characteristics

The berries have a good taste, but they do not stand out in any way against the background of other varieties.

Ripening and fruiting

Tomato Torbay belongs to the group with an early maturity. From sowing the seeds to full ripening of the fruits, it takes 105-110 days. Fruiting is extended, it directly depends on the number of stems. The more stems, the longer the ripening of the fruit. Harvesting is in July-August.

In the southern regions, the crop is harvested in several passes, and this can last until October.

Yield

Yield indicators directly depend on the care of the crop. On average, 4.7 kg is removed from 1 m2. If all agrotechnical points are observed, 6-7 kg can be removed.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

The best time to sow seeds is late March, early April. The material is chosen carefully, you should not plant seeds with an expired date. Since Torbay is a hybrid, there is no point in using self-collected seed. Nothing will grow out of empty seeds.

Loose, soft and fertilized soil is harvested in containers. It is poured abundantly with water at room temperature, and holes are formed.

At this time, the raw material must be processed. Water with a weak solution of potassium permanganate is poured into a small container. The seeds are dipped into the water. Empty seeds float, good ones sink to the bottom. The remaining seed is rinsed in water and dried with a towel.

After sowing, the soil must be abundantly moistened. Next, the container is covered with foil. The temperature under the film must be at least + 25 °. The material should hatch in a week, after which the film is removed.

Seedling care before picking is simple. Watering the bushes occurs simultaneously with the introduction of top dressing, once a week. The variety dives after the formation of several strong leaves. New containers should be deep and not narrow.

It is necessary to transplant the plant into the ground in May, at the age of 55-60 days, during the acclimatization of the bushes. The area for tomatoes is dug up, fertilized and spilled with hot water. Then holes are formed into which stimulating fertilizers are poured. Pegs are driven in next to the pits. Bushes are tied to them immediately.

After transplanting, each seedling is spilled with warm water (2-3 buckets), and the next irrigation is carried out in a week.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

It is recommended to plant no more than 3 bushes per 1 m2. The planting pattern should be staggered - 40x50 cm. This is necessary because the crown of the variety is spreading. She needs a lot of space, especially if the shaping is not carried out on time.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and caring

There are no special requirements for the care of the Torbay tomato. When growing a hybrid and a good harvest, the following must be observed.

  • Most often, bushes are formed in 1-2 stems. Therefore, the forming of the variety is mandatory. And also it is worth cutting off excess leaves (especially when grown in greenhouses), 1-3 leaves at a time.Deletion always starts from the lower branches.

  • Although culture is deterministic, a garter is necessary. Under the weight of the fruit, the stem bends to the ground.

  • Torbay is unpretentious in watering. He can calmly survive if he skips one irrigation. On average, water is added 1-2 times a week, but they do it abundantly enough so that the soil gets wet by at least 15-20 cm. To reduce the frequency of watering, you can use mulch from fresh straw and sawdust. Then irrigate as the mulch dries. It is worth remembering that excess moisture can lead to the formation of pests such as snails and slugs.

  • Top dressing is applied several times per season, during the formation of buds and fruits.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when it does not rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.
