Experienced gardeners and farmers grow many types of tomatoes, looking for new and exotic varieties, but 80% of the site is usually planted with proven, classic tomatoes that give stable yields. These include the late-ripening tomato Titan.
Breeding history
Varietal tomato Titan is a nightshade crop with a long history. The tomato was bred almost 40 years ago by specialists of the Crimean branch of the experimental station of selection (A.N. Lukyanenko, A.P. Maskov and M.E. Yegiyan). The tomato was added to the State Register of Breeding Achievements in 1986. Tomato is recommended for cultivation in the open field in the North Caucasus region. In regions with risky farming and cold summers, tomatoes are grown in greenhouses and greenhouses.
Description of the variety
The Titan tomato is a low-growing bush of the determinant type, which, compactly located in the garden, will give many tasty fruits. The compact plant grows to a height of 38-50 cm. It is characterized by medium branching, a strong central stem, moderate thickening with large green foliage, a developed root system and simple inflorescences. The first fruit cluster is formed above 5-7 leaves, where 3-4 berries are tied.
During the growing period, the plant does not require special conditions and care. A bush is usually formed in 2-4 stems, which further increases the yield, and does not need pinching. Despite its short stature, it is recommended to tie the bush to supports, since the branches can sag and break off under a huge number of berries. Due to the fact that the tomato has a universal purpose, it is eaten fresh, canned, pickled, and is widely used in cooking. The berries are suitable for whole fruit preservation.
The main qualities of the fruit
The Titan tomato belongs to the medium-sized nightshade. With proper agricultural technology, the tomato gains a mass of 77-141 grams. The vegetable is characterized by a regular rounded shape with a perfectly smooth surface and a rich red color in a state of absolute ripeness. At the stage of technical maturity, tomatoes are light green in color. The skin of the vegetable is firm, but not tough. Vegetables tolerate transportation well, are resistant to cracking and can be stored for a long time without loss of taste and marketability. The peculiarity of the fruits is their evenness, which makes them more attractive to market.
Taste characteristics
The taste of tomatoes is excellent. The pulp is fleshy, moderately firm and sufficiently juicy, without wateriness and a large number of seeds. Tomatoes have a balanced taste - there is both sourness and sweetness, complemented by a fresh tomato aroma. In fresh and canned form, the peel of tomatoes is not felt.
Ripening and fruiting
Titan tomatoes belong to the group of late-ripening nightshade crops. From the emergence of full shoots to the tasting of ripe berries, 118-135 days pass. Tomatoes spice up together. Fruiting of the variety is stretched, which will allow you to enjoy fresh tomatoes from the garden for a long time. The peak of fruit recoil occurs at the end of July - August.
Yield
Yield indicators are a virtue of the Titan crop. When performing standard agricultural techniques, up to 4.5 kg of ripe tomatoes can be removed from 1 bush per season.Agrarians, under favorable weather conditions, harvest up to 590 centners per hectare.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
Tomato is grown in seedlings. Sowing seeds is carried out 60-70 days before transplanting to the garden. The optimal period is late March - early April. The seed is pre-sorted, disinfected and processed in growth stimulants, which contributes to the early formation of the root system.
Providing the right conditions (room temperature 20-25 degrees and lighting 12-14 hours a day), the mass germination of shoots begins on the 7-9th day. This process can be accelerated by using glass or film, which covers the box with seedlings to provide a greenhouse effect. Diving of plants is carried out at the stage of appearance of 2-3 leaves on the bushes. After picking, you can apply mineral fertilizers. In 10-14 days, you can begin to prepare the seedlings for a new growing environment by hardening, taking the plants out to fresh air every day.
It is recommended to transplant seedlings into open ground during a period when the soil and air are well warmed up. Most often, the disembarkation procedure is carried out at the end of May or in the first week of summer. Tomatoes are planted in greenhouses (in the northern regions) 2-3 weeks earlier. Covering with agrofibre or film will help protect against unexpected night frosts (arcs are installed and the material is stretched).
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
It is important not only to care for the bushes, but also to plant them correctly in the garden. It is recommended to place 5-6 bushes per 1 m2, which will allow the plants to receive sufficient light, sun and air. The optimal layout for planting is 30x50 cm.
Growing and care
The plant has no special requirements for the soil. The site must be cleared of weeds and other debris, dug up to improve air permeability, and also, before planting seedlings, the soil is spilled with a solution of copper sulfate. The best place is considered to be where carrots, cucumbers, herbs and zucchini used to grow.
Tomatoes need standard care, which consists of a chain of events: irrigation with standing water, top dressing, weeding and loosening of beds, formation and tying of bushes, protection from the invasion of pests and diseases.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
Plant immunity is not very strong, therefore it is recommended to protect tomatoes from some diseases. Tomatoes have poor resistance to late blight, so ventilation and watering control are required. In addition, the variety has a tendency to be struck by stolbur. Tomatoes are more resistant to macrosporiosis and septoria. In practice, Titan tomatoes are often prone to top rot. Preventive spraying and treatments will provide protection against many viruses and fungi. Among the insects that attack tomato bushes, the Colorado potato beetle can be distinguished.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
The culture has good resistance to stress. It perfectly tolerates drought, short heat, but reacts negatively to sudden drops in temperature. In addition, the tomato does not like drafts and strong winds.
Review overview
This term has many admirers, especially among farmers who grow tomatoes on an industrial scale. This is due to the fact that the variety is high-yielding, yields tasty fruits with excellent commercial qualities, which endure transportation and are stored for a long time. Summer residents note the versatility of tomatoes and ease of care.
Along with the advantages, it is worth pointing out some of the disadvantages of the culture: weak immunity and late ripening, which does not allow growing a crop in a garden in Siberia or the Urals.
