It is quite difficult for gardeners and farmers in regions with difficult climatic conditions to choose a tomato variety that will be productive, giving the crop in a short time. These include the early ripening variety Bullfinch, which grows well in the garden.
Breeding history
The vegetable culture Bullfinch was created by Russian breeders of the Biotekhnika agricultural company in 2008. The culture is not included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation, however, its popularity is growing every year, which is due to simple agricultural technology and the ability to give good yields even in cool summer conditions.
The variety is recommended for cultivation in Siberia, the Far East, the Urals, in the North-Western and European parts of the country. The most productive culture is when grown in open ground.
Description of the variety
Tomato Bullfinch is a low-growing plant of determinant type of growth. A compact tomato bush grows up to 45-50 cm, while it looks powerful and strong. It has an erect, strong central stem, moderate thickening with rich green foliage, a developed root system and an intermediate type of inflorescence. The first cluster with fruits is formed above 6-7 leaves, where up to 5-6 berries are tied.
When growing a plant, you do not need to form bushes, however, during the ripening of the fruits, you cannot do without a garter, otherwise all the berries will lie on the ground. In addition, experienced gardeners recommend removing excess stepchildren, which grow very slowly, and thinning out the lower leaves so that dampness does not accumulate. The purpose of tomatoes is universal, which allows the vegetable to be widely used in cooking, processed into pasta and mashed potatoes, canned, and added to salads.
The main qualities of the fruit
Bullfinch tomatoes are large-fruited vegetables that gain weight up to 200 grams. The shape of the fruit is traditional, flat-round with a leveled and perfectly smooth surface. Ripe tomato is evenly covered with red color, in a state of technical maturity - dark green. The peel of the fruit is thin and shiny, quite capable of protecting the tomato from cracking. In addition, tomatoes tolerate transportation well, are endowed with a long shelf life, and also have an attractive presentation, since they grow of the same shape and size.
Taste characteristics
Tomatoes have good taste characteristics. The flesh of the berries is moderately dense, fleshy, juicy, but not watery. There are practically no seeds in the pulp. The taste is dominated by sweetness, complemented by a pronounced tomato aroma.
Ripening and fruiting
The Bullfinch Tomato is a mid-early vegetable. From the mass germination of seedlings to the first ripe berries on fruit clusters, 94-109 days pass. The fruiting period lasts about 2 months. The peak of tomato ripening occurs in the third decade of July - mid-August.
Yield
The yield of the variety is good. If all the recommendations for care are followed, 6-6.5 kg of ripe tomatoes can be harvested from 1 m2.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
It is necessary to grow a nightshade crop using the seedling method. Seeds are sown in late March - early April (55-60 days before transfer to the garden). Before sowing, the seed is recommended to be sorted out, disinfected and treated with a growth stimulator. For the quick germination of seedlings, the correct temperature regime should be provided in the room, as well as a sufficient amount of light. As a rule, mass shoots are observed on the 6-8th day.
At the stage of appearance of 2-3 leaves on the bush, the plants are dived into individual cups. Some experienced farmers recommend hardening the bushes (7-10 days before transplanting), which will ensure a soft and quick adaptation of the seedlings to new growing conditions.
It is recommended to plant the bushes in open ground in late May - early June, when the air and soil are well warmed up, and the nighttime drops in temperature are behind. At the transplanting stage, there should be 5-7 leaves on the bushes. Transplant seedlings on a cloudy day or in the evening when there is no sun. After transplanting, for several days, the bushes can be covered with agrofibre at night to protect against unforeseen natural disasters.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
When growing Bullfinch tomatoes, you need to observe the density of the placement of bushes in the garden, and also use the correct planting scheme. 5-6 bushes can be planted per 1 m2. The correct scheme for landing is considered to be a 70x30 cm scheme.
Growing and care
The culture is not very whimsical to the soil, so it is enough to clean, dig up and fertilize the soil. Fertile, breathable soil with neutral acidity is considered most suitable. Most often, bullfinch tomatoes are planted in an area where legumes and cabbage were their predecessors.
In order for the yields to be stable and high, the plant will need complex care: watering, fertilizing, loosening and weeding the soil, tying bushes during the ripening of berries, partial removal of stepchildren and lower leaves, as well as protection from insects and viruses. It is not recommended to overfeed the seedlings with nitrogen-containing fertilizers.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
Tomato Bullfinch has good immunity, therefore it is resistant to many diseases that nightshades are exposed to (top rot, fusarium wilting, brown spot). Due to its early ripening, the tomato is practically not susceptible to phytophthora. Timely spraying with special preparations (insecticides) will help protect against invasions of harmful insects.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
The variety is very stress-resistant, therefore it grows well in the most unfavorable conditions. The plant tolerates short-term drought, lack of light, sudden spring cold snaps, as well as temperature fluctuations even during the growing season. Most tomatoes do not like rainy weather, but Bullfinch does not react to prolonged rains.
Growing regions
Bullfinch is an ideal tomato variety for growing in northern regions, Siberia and the Urals. In recent years, tomato has also been grown in Moldova and Ukraine.
Review overview
This mid-early variety is popular among summer residents and farmers who grow vegetables for sale, since it is characterized by simple agricultural technology and high tolerance to adverse weather conditions. In addition, the good taste and excellent commercial qualities of the fruit are noted. Many housewives are captivated by the versatility of tomatoes, which are good both in salads and in dressings.
